@Carole Batskin THE TURKS AND THE WEST. Europe stood in awe of the Ottomans who crushed many states and conquered vast territories, going, as all patriotic Turks will proudly point out, "all the way to the gates of Vienna." European literature is replete with the depictions of the Turk as the hated enemy. The English often thought of the Turk as awe-inspiring and destructive. Thomas Fuller wrote in The Holy Warre (1639): "The Turkish Empire is the greatest... the sun ever saw. ...Grass springeth not where the grand signior's horse setteth his foot." Halman, T. and Warner, J., 2007. Rapture and revolution. Syracuse, NY: Syracuse University Press, Crescent Hill Publications, p.9. 😭😭😭😭😭

@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ 38 - Matthew 5 : 32 " But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. " 39 - Leviticus 15 : 19 -20 19 " And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. 20 And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean." 40 - John 2 : 3 - 4 3 " And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. " 41 - Matthew 7 : 6 " Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. " 42 - Psalm 137 : 9 Blessed is he who seizes your infants and and dashes them against the rocks 43 - 1 Samuel 15 : 2 - 3 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says : " I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” 44 - Numbers 31 : 13 - 18 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army - the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds - who returned from the battle. 15 “ Have you allowed all the women to live ? ” he asked them. 16 “ They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. 45 - Deuteronomy 20 : 16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 46 - Ezekiel 9 : 5 - 6 5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple. 47 - Isaiah 13 : 15 - 16 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated 48 - Hosea 13 : 16 The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.” 49 - Joshua 6 : 21 - 24 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it-men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 50 - 2 John 1 : 10 - 11 10 " If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed : " 11 " For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. " 51 - Deuteronomy 13 : 6 - 10 6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. 9 You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 52 - Deuteronomy 17 : 2 - 7 2 If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, 3 and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, 4 and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, 5 take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death. 6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 7 The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you. 53 - Matthew 5 : 17 “ Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. "

@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ 20 - 2 Samuel 11 : 2 - 5 ، 14 - 15 2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child. .............. 14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. 21 - Genesis 19 : 31 - 36 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father 22 - Genesis 9 : 20 - 22 20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: 21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. 23 - Hosea 1 : 2 - 3 2 " The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD. 3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son. " 24 - Revelation 17 : 14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. 25 - Galatians 3 : 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole 26 - Genesis 2 : 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made 27 - Psalm 110 : 1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. 28 - 1 Corinthians 1 : 25 " Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. " 29 - Jeremiah 4 : 10 " Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul. " 30 - Genesis 9 : 12 - 16 12 " And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. " 31 - Genesis 11 : 6 - 7 6 "And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. " 32 - Luke 22 : 43 " And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. " 33 - 1 Samuel 15 : 10 - 11 , 35 10 " Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. , 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. " 34 - Romans 9 : 13 " As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. " 35 - Luke 11 : 40 " Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also ? " 36 - Galatians 3 : 1 " O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you ? " 37 - Galatians 3 : 3 " Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh ? "

@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ 8 - Matthew 10 : 34 “ Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” 9 - Ezekiel 4 : 12 And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight. 10 - Exodus 21 : 20 - 21 20 “ Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. 11 - Romans 3 : 7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? 12 - Proverbs 5 : 18 - 19 18 " Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth." 19 " Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love." 13 - Proverbs 7 : 16 - 19 16 " I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. 19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: " 14 - Song of Solomon 7 : 7 - 8 7 " This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes. 8 I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples; " 15 - Song of Solomon 8 : 8 " We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for? " 16 - Ezekiel 23 : 19 - 20 19 " Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. 20 " For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. " 17 - Rurh 3 : 4 " And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. " 18 - Zechariah 14 : 2 " I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city." 19 - 2 Samuel 13 : 10 - 14 10 "And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister. 12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly. 13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee. 14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her."

@Cran Indeed, all that goes without saying. Key point is that these events aren't taking place today, so I find it amusing when elitists-with no real grounds for being so-come into "pop-history" discourse and just drop the classic "this the victor-biased version of the events, I know the REAL history!", when all they've done is huff another partisan retelling. Edit: To make things clear I'm not talking about you, moreso the other repliers.

@Nōtan This is an amalgamation sources and data to get the version of history we agree on. The loser POV is not concerning to Victor when their is absolute victory. The general discourse of the times revolves around the victors POV. To the plebeians history is what is told to them until there is enough time or push back for the more truthful account of prevail. Napoleon won many battles and subdued many nations but ultimately was defeated, he was not the victor. WWI for example, Germany was blamed for everything and penalized heavily. Which lead to resentment and eventually WWII. If Germany had been victorious we would be looking a very different world today.

@Cran I always find these comments funny because a lot of the time they aren't as true as they claim to be. Plenty of historical documentation-including the one we just watched-ridicule the victor for their barbarity and failures. The victor's POV isn't any less integral than the loser's especially in the modern era; plenty of times the losers demonise and vilify the victors and make false claims to form an antithetical ideologue amongst their people. Perfect example is Napoleon being branded the "anti-christ" with depictions of him serving/being Satan.

@Joella Z well if you want to be very specific that is true. However "dark ages" is a pretty common term used to describe the medieval era as a whole. The phrase "Dark Age" itself derives from the Latin saeculum obscurum, originally applied by Caesar Baronius in 1602 when he referred to a tumultuous period in the 10th and 11th centuries (taken from wikipedia).

A lot of older knights went on the Crusades, knowing that they wouldn't be coming back. As for the younger knights, it was the perfect opportunity for those looking for promotions, or looking to earn their knighthood by combat. Common fighters who had been trained for combat, but didn't have titles, went along expecting to come back as "Sir."

" and he is talking about the entire army not some merc. most of them were barbaric, they slaughtered muslims, jews and orthodox christians and even sacked dome of rock (book name Saladin by John man).

@Fursan*the knight Islam and the Babylonian Witchcraft erroneously called Christianity both worship the masculine and feminine aspect of the moon deity otherwise known as Baphomet, or Ba'al. The true form of Allah being Hubal, with his three daughters, Allat, Al-'uzza, and Manat. All Islamic countries have the crescent moon on every mosque and their flags. Many still have the three little stars, Hubal's daughters. So in essence, all went to Sheol as Sons of Heylel. Ende.

@Fursan*the knight what about those listening to a false prophet that for 500 years BEFORE the Crusades killed, raided, raped and forcefully converted people? Where did those ones go? In that heaven of yours full of hoes and rivers of wine, served by naked young boys? But hey, YOURE ALWAYS THE VICTIMS right?

@Fursan*the knight You should educate yourself. Historically there has never been a religion so barbarically responsible for the annihilation of cultures and languages. First it was convert or die, then next it was pay heavy taxes or convert. It's sad to look at the middle east in it's current state. Syrians for example, lost their language and identity, and they are just one of many that fell victim to the absolute barbarism of the arabs and their warlike religion. If they were to see satan, it would only be for the sole reason that they did not see past their minor differences with the romans, and instead completely unite to irradicate these enemies of moral decency, before it was too late. Unfortunately they failed, and ever since then the middle east is living in the dark ages, hanging at the low hanging fruit filled with oil and gas, barely keeping them alive. If you are angered by what i have said, then i ask of you first, to look at yourself, and the history of your family tree. Are you arabic? or were your ancestors victims of the arabs who destroyed your peoples original language, and culture? It's a tough pill to swallow, most choose not too, and i wouldn't blame you.

This was mostly neutral but still there were some great mistakes, for example at battle of Dorylaeum Turkish forces didn't only used ranged tactics rather charged at crusader lines and tried to breakthrough them. During that time Byzantine armies were a lot lighter than western European knights so Turks miscalculated how much crusader lines could resist with their heavier armours and got caught off guard when crusader reinforcements arrived. Another mistake that after their defeat Turkish forces didn't allow crusader army to freely travel in Anatolia rather kept harrassing them constantly with hit-run attacks, supply route raids and scorched-earth tactics. It was the main reason why the crusader army traveled south away from Turkish obas in central Anatolia. An oba was basicly a mobile city consisting hundreds or even thousands of nomadic tents and vast majority of them were moved into fertile valleys of central Anatolia avoiding heavily populated areas which were also conflict zones like western and southern Anatolia. There weren't many obas in Syria as well simply because of desert conditions. This was why Atabeys who ruled Syrian territories had vast majority Arabic armies not Turkish and none of them ever used Sultan title which is wrongly shown in this video. Using Sultan title would mean they were no longer a part of Seljuk empire therefore they would also loose Seljuk protection and be overthrown by an Arabic Emir easily. However it is true even if Seljuk empire still existed it was extremely divided and couldn't act against crusaders. While some Seljuk Atabeys raised armies and tried to fight against them especially Atabeys who ruled Arabic territories as Antioch, Jerusalem etc were vast majority Arabic and Arabs were really eager to revenge massacres committed. For Turkish perspective the first crusade was a threat which was slightly touched to them..

I watch many videos of this nature. One thing that I think would improve ALL OF THEM would be the inclusion of the 4-digit year, at ALL TIMES, in one corner of the screen, so that the viewer can remind himself which year this is taking place in again. For as many videos of this nature as I watch, I'm still amazingly bad at placing the decade or even the century of many major events of which I've watched numerous multi-hour-long videos on. In short, keeping a year posted in a corner at all times, would, in my strong opinion, drastically boost the educational effectiveness of these videos.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc

Actually, his accent is far more rhotic than the Standard British Accent. Initially, it made his narration seem more epic, but it's become quite irritable for me, and that sort of feel doesn't go well with this period of history, either. After watching the video, I am disappointed that many important details are left out, leaving the story not flowing well. For better tellings of medieval history, channels like Kings and Generals and Flash Point History are definitely better. Extra History's series on the First Crusade, while not showing the battles, and only having still images, has a lot of interesting information about the characters and people, that is not mentioned in other tellings of it, from other channels. Kings and Generals and Flash Point History show more maps with battles, with less of a focus on the personal side. This video only provides a brief overview of the First Crusade, probably intended for people who don't already know much about medieval history. For people who already do, Epic History is doing a disservice, and this video probably isn't worth watching. The non-medieval videos are good, though.

The first crusade is such an interesting story , I think it would make a great movie or better tv series . Interesting larger than live characters like Bohemond and his brothers , Alexios the emperor and even interesting female characters like his daughter Anna Komnene. Bizarre, brutal and tragic events like the peoples crusade butchering its way to the holy land only to be crushed immediately as soon as they reach muslim lands . Epic battles and feats of bravery, greed , ruthlessness and deep religious devotion all at once . A truly incredible story

---->> > They slaughtered innocent women and children N the name of Christ - 1 - 1 Samuel 15:2-3 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” 2 - Exodus 21:20-21 20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. 3 - Matthew 10:34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” 4 - Numbers 31 : 13 - 18 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 5 - Deuteronomy 20:16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 6 - Ezekiel 9 : 5 - 6 5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple. 7 - Isaiah 13 : 15 - 16 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. 16 Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives violated 8 - Hosea 13 : 16 The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open.” 9 - Joshua 6 : 21 - 24 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it-men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. 10 - Zechariah 14 : 2 " I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city."

Actually, it was one man, called Orban, who made the cannon for the Ottomans, and it was only because they could actually pay enough for it. He had initially approached Konstantinos XI Palaiologos, but he could not offer enough funds or resources to build said cannon, making its construction in Constantinople practically impossible. The Ottomans simply could afford a lot of them to be made, so they were.

Must have been an amazing time to be alive. People who fought with faith on both sides. And then look at what's happening now.

Can you recommend a good video depicting the 1400 years Islam spent waging war on christendom, prior to the 1st Crusade.

Excellent presentation. This historical episode points to the moral bankruptcy of religion. Their faith didn't stop them from behaving just like any other war party.

I feel places like Jerusalem have some kind of significance that gets dressed with a different kind of significance to hide why it’s really significant. For a place to be significant for so long and for so many lives to have been lost on it while whole continents to risk everything they have means it has something more important than a kind of “historical” value.

It's the city where God made his temple and you say its significance is hidden.

@Mike Perhaps. There does seem to be a fair amount of movements through out history that carry a lot of momentum with no clear indication of where it is coming from.

I think what they discovered in those cities started the Renaissance period eventually. Like the found something very important that changed western civilization

What's interesting about the crusader times is two-fold: 1) The Christian Crusaders were made up of factions and the various Arab and Turkic powers were made up of various factions. And they all fought each other and allied with different partners at different times, sometimes a Christian group and a Muslim group against some other Christian or Muslim group. It was not merely "Christians vs Muslims". Everyone was vying for political power (like usual, of course!). And then the Mongols finally arrived which threw an overwhelming monkey wrench into the mix. 2) As Tamim Ansary explains in his book, the Muslim world considered the Christian Crusader foray into the Holy Land as a relatively short lived blip on the great time line of history, and their main threats were other Muslim empires (remember there were Fatimids, Ayyubids, Abbasids, Seljuk Turks, other Turks, Mamluks in Egypt after the Fatimids and Ayyubids, and the most threatening bulldozer of empires of all.....the Mongols.

My favorite Crusader king is Frederick 2nd of Sicily, HRE, Germany...6th(?) Crusade, Frederick 2nd won Jerusalem without spilling one drop of blood. Also Frederick established the first university in Europe (Southern Italy). Wrote the definitive book on Falconry still in use today.
