The idea of *not* sacking, pillaging and slaughtering a conquered city is a very modern idea. Better logistics and more organized fighting probably contribute to this greatly. In our time, of course, war crime tribunals and media coverage help as well.
@trndsttr75853 жыл бұрын
@@kohinarec6580 Not necessarily. Cyrus of the Achaemenid empire, the first Muslim Caliphs etc all spared the cities they conquered. Not that Muslims or any other civilization (they certainly did) didn't engage in destruction and plunder, bu that it was not uncommon for conquerors to spare the conquered.
@mgyldz3 жыл бұрын
It was possibly not unique for Europeans, but sent shockwaves throughout the Muslim world, who have not encountered such violence before. It was a common occurrence for a city to change hands, as Jerusalem changed hands just months before the Crusaders arrived. Arab and Turkish historians of the time describe the event with disbelief and disgust. Muslims did not exert the same amount of violence against Crusader states in the two centuries after, and they spared everyone's lives when they took back Jerusalem. The "both sides" argument is usually mistaken with objectivity, but we have to do justice to the truth.

Stephen made it all the way back to France, where his wife Adela (a daughter of William the Conqueror) demanded he go back and finish the Crusade. He made it back in time to get killed in a different battle where Godfrey's brother Baldwin left him to die. 🤷♂️

The act of dismantling your own ships, then using the timber to create siege towers must have have been a significant inspiration for George RR Martin when writing Daenerys Targeryn’s siege of Meereen in the game of thrones books. Both involve hosts needing to storm an enemy city whilst living off the land in a scorched earth desert environment. I much prefer real life history, but it is interesting to think what effect Daenerys’s dragons would of had on the first crusade if used as a weapon of war?? 😅
