It's so cool to see accurate models of cities like Antioch complete with terrain, it gives such a better understanding of the battles!

Indeed. People like Baz Battles do amazing battle videos, but the 3D maps really lets you understand why terrain affects battles in the way they do and why assaulting Antioch was not a matter of just surrounding the city.

The idea of *not* sacking, pillaging and slaughtering a conquered city is a very modern idea. Better logistics and more organized fighting probably contribute to this greatly. In our time, of course, war crime tribunals and media coverage help as well.
@trndsttr7585
@trndsttr7585 3 жыл бұрын
@@kohinarec6580 Not necessarily. Cyrus of the Achaemenid empire, the first Muslim Caliphs etc all spared the cities they conquered. Not that Muslims or any other civilization (they certainly did) didn't engage in destruction and plunder, bu that it was not uncommon for conquerors to spare the conquered.
@mgyldz
@mgyldz 3 жыл бұрын
It was possibly not unique for Europeans, but sent shockwaves throughout the Muslim world, who have not encountered such violence before. It was a common occurrence for a city to change hands, as Jerusalem changed hands just months before the Crusaders arrived. Arab and Turkish historians of the time describe the event with disbelief and disgust. Muslims did not exert the same amount of violence against Crusader states in the two centuries after, and they spared everyone's lives when they took back Jerusalem. The "both sides" argument is usually mistaken with objectivity, but we have to do justice to the truth.

2:50 Alexios had heard that the Crusade was over from Count Stephen of Blois, who was marching back towards Constantinople with his army after the food had run out in Antioch. Stephen made it all the way back to France, where his wife Adela (a daughter of William the Conqueror) demanded he go back and finish the Crusade. He made it back in time to get killed in a different battle where Godfrey's brother Baldwin left him to die. 🤷‍♂️

The act of dismantling your own ships, then using the timber to create siege towers must have have been a significant inspiration for George RR Martin when writing Daenerys Targeryn’s siege of Meereen in the game of thrones books. Both involve hosts needing to storm an enemy city whilst living off the land in a scorched earth desert environment. I much prefer real life history, but it is interesting to think what effect Daenerys’s dragons would of had on the first crusade if used as a weapon of war?? 😅

6:47 Not sure if this depiction of Old Jerusalem is correct: the extra territory on the right did not exist (yet?). Though, I am 100% sure that the Zion Gate is not that far south. It is located above the little mosque in the previous mentioned extra territory. edit: there are more incorrect depictions in this image, not going to complain because why complain for this awesome free content. Love what you do!

When the muslims launched their counter attack on Antioch, you can be sure they didn't do so with "religious zeal".

Michael Yes, diabolical Islam returned and took Jerusalem, but they did not kill the Christian residents. Do you see the extent of Islam's brutality?

Super well done, guys. I would say that it can get a bit overwhelming with all the cities, dukes, and Godfrey's, and such...But interesting as shit. Beautifully done.

Oi Epic History TV would you ever consider doing the Northern Crusades e.g, the Wendish crusade or even the various campaigns of the Reconquista.

And yes the barbarism was unique for Arabia which is why their soldiers ran away..no soldiers fights for blood, you're not a soldier if you fight for blood...you fight for belief in justice.
