He hesitated so many times and then just went down like a stone, tumbling over the railing. When he was doing his little hops on that chair, his... barely constructed contraption looked so flimsy, like a bunch of garbage bags stapled together. It never would have worked. What an absolute madman.

There's a British kids show called Horrible Histories and on the show there's a segment called Stupid Deaths that as you can guess talks about people in history who died in really stupid ways. The reason I bring this up is because Franz Reichelt was one such hilariously stupid death. Clement Vallandingham (whom Huggbees mentioned in a previous video) was also mentioned.

@XSniper74184

You know, that's a very valid point. The reason thks death is so stupid isn't because he jumped off the Eiffel tower in an unproven parachute, but because he did it with zero safety precautions! Like the only way he survives is if this parachute is a functional design and works perfectly. If there was a flaw in the design or even just if it didn't properly deploy he dies. I suppose the line between being a daredevil and an idiot is really just if you have something ready to save you if things go wrong.

So, interestingly enough, this happened a second time, kind of. There was a guy nicknamed "Americas First Bat-Man" because his wingsuit was modeled after batwings. He hastily and erroneously repacked his parachutes after a couple years of successful wingsuiting and parachuting stunts which led to him hitting the French pavement at over 200 mph. I only know this cuz my company was commissioned to make a memorial for him.

34:49 There is a simple lexicographic answer to your predicament: one is 'the first death recorded on film', and the other is 'the earliest existing film depicting a live death' (irony included in that last title) - it's similar to the difference between 'the oldest person ever' and 'the oldest living person', or 'the richest ever person' against 'the current richest person'. They both get a title, one for 'being recorded on film' and one for 'existing on film'

It's entirely possible he knew the invention likely wouldn't work, and decided to test it himself as a last-ditch effort out of desperation; either he lives and proves himself to the world as a genius, or he dies and, well, doesn't have to deal with it anymore.
