A great doku on a quite unique event! As we do with rc models,.. this really looks alike! Such a big vessel grounded like a model... thanks a lot for sharing! Good trips! Holger from Subwaterfilm

And, by the way,.. a short question: How did they keep up the watercooling of the engines? Thanks and best wishes, Holger

The area is called a tidal flat. The level of the ocean when the tide is out is greater the the elevation of the land. The reason they grounded the ship due to a number of factors like the soil not being able to hold up excavators and the like so the ship is brought in closer and allowed to ground during the low tide where you see what is going on here. The very first shot is the anchor that will be used by the Maersk to pull itself free of the flat and move towards the ocean. I'm guessing that the part of the flat that the anchor is in floods during high tide enough to allow the Maersk to float free. Cool video.

Great video. I saw the ship and have many photos of it off Broadstairs in Kent.

Read the comments below and you can figure this out! There are many hard, sandy tidal flats like this across the world. The ship is designed to ground itself. An HDPE conduit is installed to run the POWER cable FROM the wind FARM. LOOK-You will see it. The ship is the Connector that installs the cable to the shore station. Simple concept-extremely complicated process.

Laying electrical power cables for off shore wind farm. It’s off Coast morcome the tide goes out for miles in the bay

How long was the duration of low tide? When the tides came in, what happened to the operation?

I wondered about the tide cycles. The excavators doing the pulling seemed too slow to beat the incoming tide. In one shot they showed some initial flowing of water coming in (I guess)- so did the excavators have to rush to the land to get out of the rising tide and then return the next day or that evening to get another hitch on the cable? Was this done all in one pull? Why couldn't the landward cable wench do all the pulling? I guess the video was all about the grounding. I did not understand the long tidal flat. It looked the same level all over even toward the ocean. What was the depth difference where the ship grounded vs some other location. Was it hard to get the ship back to floating or did they have trouble breaking suction? Inquiring minds want to know.

Is the cable left on the rollers? Do they remove the rollers and bury the cable later on?

@TB-zf7we6 жыл бұрын
I believe they are making the connection to land for an undersea telecommunication cable. After the tide comes back in the ship will lay the rest of the cable under the sea to its destination beach front.
