I have four growing indoor along with 2 coastal redwoods. They are wonderful companions of what will be a thousand year+ legacy. I’ll be gone, my grave will be gone, but these six trees will still be growing and remain.

The trees are now seven years old. They have left home!. The biggest one is 120 cm tall. It has some branches with brown neeedles but I think it is doing fine. The other one is 80 cm tall and is not doing very well. It has many brown needles. I have made an update of the video: "Timelapse" of the first seven years of two sequoias gigantea: "Timelapse" of the first seven years of two sequoias gigantea

Our municipality has offered a place to plant those trees nearby our home. They will move to their new permanent "destination" in spring next year. At the moment the biggest one is 70 cm.

9 years have now passed since you planted the seeds of these sequoias. You gave us an update at five years. When will the next one come ?

part 3 After a few days of above freezing temperatures and wet roots the trees can be set back out. They should not be set back out into sub zero temperatures. They will keep in the garage or cellar until the temperatures moderate some. The shock of rapidly changing temperatures should be avoided. The cold of winter does not harm the sequoias. Wintertime damage is done by wintertime dehydration from cold dry winds.

Hope your last one still lives. I used just normal mineral soil I also used for other (home) plants. I know someone who had great results using river sand, he bought in a garden shop. Giant sequoia grows best in deep, well-drained sandy loams. Make sure that initially the soil is wet. There should be some way for the soil to dry over time, so a weep-hole at the bottom might help. Water the seedling only after the soil has drained thoroughly and feels dry to the touch, but don’t let it dry out

Your trees will do much better if you innoculate them with Mychorizal Fungi .. a beneficial fungus. Field test on Pine trees showed an extremely high mortality rate for non innoculated trees while Myco innoculated trees had a 95% survival rate.. There are different strains of Mychorizal Fungi.. make sure you get the one for Conifer (cone seed) trees. The powder Myco form is easy to apply.. when replanting dip the roots in the powder before planting/covering. Doing this early in the trees life would be most beneficial.. reapply at each re-pot.

What kind of soil did you use? I had three growing in Miracle Grow and now all but one is dead and the survivor doesn't look like it's gonna make it either. I switched it to peat moss but that hasnt helped.

part 2 Ideally the container kept sequoias will be watered well and then placed outside to be buried deep by winter snow. Once they are buried deep in snow there will be no maintenance needed until the snow melts in the spring. The trees will be insulated from cold drying winds and be unable to dehydrate under the snow. If you have freezing weather but no snow then the container kept sequoias will have to be taken into a garage or cellar occasionally to be thawed and watered.

I had planted 5 sequoias outside in Indiana only to see them all die until I tried planting one with the Groasis Waterboxx. That tree remains alive even after a very harsh winter. You may want to try to use a Groasis Waterboxx (developed in the Netherlands) if you try to plant any others.

I have 10 coast redwood cuttings growing in tiny pots. The branch I took the cuttings off has long turned golden brown & dead, BUT my cuttings are all green so I guess they arent dead. Not yet anyway. I live where California & Oregon & the Ocean & the Redwoods all come together. !

Mine is about eight months old now. Still going strong! I'm in the southern U.S. and did not expect it to grow at all, but it's doing fantastic. sorry to here about that one that's not doing well, but great job on the other one!

hi, how many seeds did you start with to have these two germinate? I'm having a hard time getting my seeds to grow... Any tips?
@martinvn123
@martinvn123 11 жыл бұрын
I started with 20 seeds and had only those 2 which germinate, a low succesrate. I know someone who had 50 seeds and 35 of them germinate, a very high succesrate. He had the seeds two weeks in the refrigerator and than sowed the seeds in riversand. It worked very well for him. Perhaps you can try riversand as a soil.

I used an even mixture of river sand, peat and miracle grow garden soil...My tree is growing quite fast.Got it as a seedling in the mail and planted it in a pot this past April now it's just over 7 inches tall.Looking very thick and healthy!

I'm surprised the plant survived in those pots and the roots didn't freeze, looks like they are plastic pots which would be non-porous as would terra-cotta pots which would likely cause the roots to freeze & kill the plant ..

greet friend, I from Ukraine and also grow sequoia and sequoiaodendrons. so far I have 15 trees. Tell me, how quickly do you grow trees?
@martinvn123
@martinvn123 5 жыл бұрын
In the Ukraine I guess you can expect a grow rate of one feet a year from year 3 till year year 30. (But it is a guess)

part 1 From: giant-sequoia.xxx Can I keep a giant sequoia indoors for the winter? A heated indoors is not a beneficial environment for long-term maintenance of giant sequoias. They will most likely survive the winter inside a house but will have lost their bearings somewhat concerning their dormancy period and climate adaptation It is helpful for them to spend some time outside in the cold of winter basically resting and getting used to their environment

You can make the tree grow in 100 years as much as it would grow in 3000, apparently.

You may be confused by the English name "giant sequoia" and the scientific name Sequoiadendron giganteum. Sequoia gigantea is not a valid name. You have definitely Sequoiadendron giganteum in your video. I have one tree in my narrow garden too. I wonder how will react my neighbour some years later... it reaches about 4 m now. :-D I think my tree is 12 y.o. now. The soil is very sandy and it's continental Central European climate in flatland near Danube river.
