For 1893 years it was the biggest dream in human history to be able to fly like birds. These brave men often gave their life to make this dream become reality. Finally, in 1893, Otto Lilienthal achieved the unthinkable and flew with his glider over a distance of several meters. It was the birth of aviation. Just 2 years later he died when he lost control of his glider and crashed. 76 years later, in 1969, the 2 most famous aircraft of all time had their successful maiden flights: The Concorde and the Boeing 747.

Knowing what we know today we could be inclined to ridicule many of these early attempts. We have to remember that few of them were trained engineers or physicists and that most institutions of higher learning taught that it was not possible or that if it was it would be decades into the future before it was achieved. Most of these dreamers were ridiculed for it

It must be taken into account that 99 percent of them were do-it-yourselfers. Even today, these do-it-yourselfers would fasten their "components" with leather straps to a bow, freely insert propellers and wheels, produce structures that cannot support themselves, produce short fragile wings, etc. Glider manufacturers, who have existed for a long time, knew very well where these amateurs they are making a mistake. Therefore, the experiments of these amateurs became attractive for another invention - a camera, which already at that time provided entertainment to cheer the audience.

Back to our comment, no, we don't lead, we don't own the world. We are stupid enough to experience war and crime and the pain it produces but our " world " is basically a war hell. We believe in something called democracy which is basically the belief that somehow our Political Representatives happens to wash their sins in the river of the forgetting waters each four years, and we embrace em with open arms when they come clean and good for election. You think that's for a wise race? Of course there are better than the rest. Whilst I laughed a lot at some of the ideas - the innovation and bravery of these pioneers is awe inspiring. I think the idea of “flapping” wings was soon realised to be a big NO in the pursuit of flight and is so ridiculously funny to watch now with hindsight. Obviously, technology can only progress through experimentation and failure leads to success. Tomorrow’s technology needs to be imagined and often our imaginings need bizarre prototypes to eventually succeed. Many of these designs have lead to the various forms of flight we see today; from aircraft, helicopters, rocket packs and winged jump suits. Fascinating to watch 👍

@wruenvadam
@wruenvadam 4 жыл бұрын
@WithAStick AngryWhiteMan yeah but building a bridge or tunnel all the way across an ocean would be horribly impractical in terms of maintenance. Airliners are incredibly reliable, and if something goes wrong, they generally stand a pretty good chance of landing safely. There have been situations where engines blow up or catch on fire and thanks to well trained air crews they get back safely. There is no amount of training that will save you if an underwater bridge has problems, plus you have to now design that massive structure to handle earthquakes, especially where the plates meet, like the Mid-Atlantic ridge for instance. Catastrophic failures that lead to the deaths of everyone onboard rarely happens anymore unless airline companies as are cutting serious corners with their maintenance, and even then the planes can fly for a long time before something major happens. When you consider how many planes fly across oceans every day, you'll realize how safe they actually are. Several levels of redundancy for major systems are what save lives, along with proper pilot training. Not to mention all the rules and regulations airlines have to follow if they want to continue flying in places like America, the EU, Canada. Planes are made safer year after year. Sure mistakes do happen, and it is unfortunate, but we learn a lot from them which improves safety even further. And I get where youre coming from when it comes to trains. For interstate or Intercity travel I can certainly agree. It is a lot safer than planes, but for traveling across oceans I would rather not be in a tube thousands of meters below the surface wondering how well maintained it is. Sure we have built underwater tunnels easily but nothing spanning the entire ocean to great depths that people have to travel through on a regular basis and handle the stresses of that. If something bad happens out there, you have a much lower chance of surviving. Than something bad happening on a plane. A plane can still be controlled if something goes wrong and can situations can be easily and immediately responded to, not so much for a train that only has two ways out of the entire situation.
