I was lucky enough to hear his gifted voice when I went for umrah in July. As much as we miss his mesmerising recitation, we have to remember its a very privileged paid job for them. They are all entitled to move on to do other things.

It is a privileged job, yes. Well paid job, no. Actually the salary of the Imams of Masjid al-Haram is lower than that of the domestic cleaning staff. Being an Imam is just a side job to all Imams of Haram, with them being ministers and professors. Therefore it is something like volunteer work and therefore the salary is extremely small compared to their main source of income.

His contract supposedly ended and has not been renewed. They also say he is on long vacation. Both seem illogical since he led prayers for ten days after the expiry date of his contract and he is still in Makkah attending to his duties at Umm al-Qura University as Associate Professor. I personally think there is an issue with the new contract or something. Allah knows best.
