very nice idea of a video, very wholesome allready.. like Rumi said. "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." And this guy did just that.

State of PS1 emulators in 2007 was actually pretty decent, Bleem and Connectix VGS worked really well for a number of games even back in 2001. I used to use Connectix VGS with PSX Emulation Cheater on a Pentium II to develop Xploder codes for personal use, only reason I still used the PS1 was because I never had a way to connect the Dualshocks to PC at the time, and only a few games were comfortable on keyboard. Almost wish I still had the gear around to compare latency to modern emulator setups.

James originally uploaded this to Speed Demos Archive, which was the sort of speedrun hub before the current speedrun website. Per their rules, this is likely run on real hardware. They had no leaderboard and would only post the top run for each game. The mods were really strict with quality too. Like if a game had no run, and you submitted a run that had a lot of mistakes, they would reject it and tell you to do better. Shit was wild. cat As a longtime casual Spyro speedrun fan since the Bertoli days, this video is really nice to see. Thanks for doing this Dayo.

The information @27:00 is really insightful and is something id definitely enjoy learning more about, the O.O.G's of Spyro speedrunning.

As a casual player, this looks a lot like how I play, except he fucks up a lot less and he clearly thinks it through more than I do, so I'm really impressed. I've been playing Spyro since I was 6, I'm now 30, know the levels pretty well, still takes me at least 5 hours to complete the game at 120%, as I still struggle with certain areas and enemies and bump into stuff multiple times when supercharging. I'd try out speedrunning but I'm probably hopeless lmao And yeah, it took pretty long to figure out how to complete Wizard Peak. I used to play with my mom and brother, and neither of us saw the narrow path at the start of the level for a lomg time. It also took us literally three years to find the secret platform in Haunted Towers. We remember hearing that dragon statue sound in the supercharge ramp and just being unable to figure out where it came from.

Oh man I remember JamesBertolli's camera filmed videos back in 2007. Those were the days. I miss being 11 and making Spyro videos, filming my TV.

Love this video idea, very cool to see what a speedrun looks like with not just a lack of modern strats but also basically no speedrunning scene for the game.

Personally, my first run of this game was I believe around 2h30m-ish back in 2014, and I went in fully intentionally saying "I'm not trying to be overly smart yet, I just want to play it thee way I would casually, but in one sitting" which may be what was going on in James' head as well here? It's fun to just have a base to start from, even if it's knowingly suboptimal, just to have a time on there.

I'd also love to see more of these casual long reaction style things! Having been around for a while myself as well it'd be really cool to see the history re-explained from someone who knows way more about what they're talking about than I 😅

Also the time limit. It used to be 10 minutes, which explain the multiple parts. That was pain for long videos. And the first speedrun happened to be 120%! Like a brain storming video. i think a super cool spin off from the idea you give at 28:03 would be to have a side by side sort of thing, maybe as the final video in a ‘series’ of current WR with maybe a pre-twitch or pre-CS would be really interesting because of the nature of spyro, there’s not a TONNE of tricks and things, just a bunch of optimisations and routes that add up to save so much time, and i think it would be really satisfying to see the gradual evolution and THEN how that all stacks up and all the knowledge required for a current WR 🤍🤍
@FaeAstria Жыл бұрын
also thank u for this amazing video, as someone who has only been interested in viewing spyro speedruns recently, it’s amazing watching the beginnings and comments from someone who knows much more than me about the game mechanics - thank you for all the time and effort put in !!
