The First Turnabout is a fantastic intro for the Ace Attorney series. Its quick, its easy, its fun and it really gives the player a taste of what the series has to offer. In this video, I will be going over and reviewing Ace Attorney’s intro. The First Turnabout!

I especially like how Frank Sahwit is purposely the weakest killer in the series. He was just a petty thief, nothing more. Even looking at later intro cases, you have a bomber who sold his wares on the black market, a temple monk who has the entire court behind him, a professional conman (even if he doesn’t seem like one), and a corrupt prosecutor. Those intro cases can get pretty intense, but that’s not the point of this first case. So the killer is just a burglar who got caught, nothing more. He also has pretty blatant anger issues, which leads to him being easy to get a satisfying reaction from. Not often is there a witness that gets mad this easily and isn’t a red herring. It all comes together to make the purposely least-interesting easiest killer in the series, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I was hooked from this case. No matter which kind of culprit we'd had, opening with a main character death like Mia's wouldn't have worked. I actually feel like that particular plot point was still slightly too soon, and it should've been after we met Edgeworth. But in terms of presentation, this was all gold. The oddities and hurdles of AA's legal system arrive nice and quick.

I agree, but I do think it was necessary. One of the problems with Danganronpa is that NOBODY thinks to kill the smartest person in the group. They essentially drag you through the case. This happens through Maya anyway, but it’s less frequent than what it could’ve been. I think Killing the brainiac of the series after they display that they are the brainiac is the right way to deal with them

In my case, the first game I played was T&T, so the first case I played was the first appearance of Dahlia Hawthorne... Therefore I got hooked immediately! As soon as I beat the second case of that game, I realized that there had to have been at least a prequel, and then played them in order. But to me, 3-1 is a good enough tutorial case! It doesn't tell you as much about the facts, and it doesn't hand hold you as much, but the storyline in that one is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING!

Seeing Adrian in 3-2 already is a major notification for a result of 2-4, and it's stuff like that which probably lead to later games doing fewer callbacks like that. How to use them, rather than just go through the motions in order to get a good grade at some quiz! when I found the solution as to why the clock was wrong (lets be honest, that was the only part of this trial we would ever struggle with.) and then i witnessed that hilariously over the top breakdown... i just knew it would be a great game. after finishing the final case (which for me was rise to the ashes)... Good case but one gaping plot hole in it Sahwit basically admitted that he heard the time from the statue which is why he believed the time to be 3 hours behind then what it actually was. Then Phoenix pointed out that the only way Sahwit would know it is a clock is if he held it in his hand. Then told Phoenix basically “oh yea, how did you know? Prove that it was 3 hours slow on that day” Uhhhh Sahwit already kind of did himself. Lol.

To me the biggest thing about this case that makes it special is the whole using the passport to prove why the clock was wrong. It's a great example of using evidence to prove something more than what the evidence itself actually is. Sure, it's just a passport, but logistically, it can be used to prove more than it seems.

@@jamespreston4211 I just think that Mia did what a vengeful spirit would do against the guilty killer who murdered them. There's a reason why you don't summon spirits who were just recently a victim of a murder case. They might lash out violently against their murderer if they had a chance to meet them face to face. It was a spur of the moment. Mia will never get another chance of satisfaction of exposing Redd White because she's already dead and also her sister, Maya, wasn't able to maintain her spirit in the mortal plane for a very long time so she has to be brief.

First case should probably be near top tier if not, mid tier. It perfectly balanced both introduction to the game and its fun factor. Other cases may have improved upon it, but there's others that did badly. This case did everything right in my opinion. Not a lot of witnesses to question like other cases, most of the dialouge flows without much of the player's input, and when the player does put their inputs it's at places where we should control the choices we have. Not mention that we don't have a lot of evidence, something that may appear overehelming in the later cases due to an abundance of them. Just saying, if this wasn't the first case, it's possible it could of sucked and lost people's interest in the game.

This is a great first case, short and sweet, and introduces the main mechanics of Ace Attorney well. Only two things I don't like: The killer is revealed before the case even starts, which would become a common pitfall for many more cases, and having defendants testify against themselves is just a bit too unrealistic for my taste, even in a world where spirits are channeled and questioned, parrots are cross examined and orcas are accused of murder.

I loved this case when I first got into Phoenix Wright many years ago, though my friends had mixed reactions to it. One friend who also really ended up enjoying the entire series loved the first case too. Two other people I know really didn't care for it, and I think it came down to showing the killer off at the start (when you come in wanting a who-dun-it but get a how-dun-it you might come away dissatisfied), and the lack of difficulty. My and my other Ace Attorney fan friend were kids when we played this game, but people who are older and just generally smarter than a child might find this case to be so easy they dismiss the rest of the game as a result. Kind of unfair considering it's a tutorial, but that's also kind of the game's fault because if you aren't stumped by the time-zone question, there's nothing in the case that hints toward more difficulty later in the game.

I dont think i really agree, but i went into it with the context of hype. I had heard good things of the series, so when the very first case is so basic, it is almost a turnoff. Maybe it was a perfect first case for the franchise while it was new, but since then, the subgenre has expanded and been elaborated on so much that it feels too basic to work if youve had any exposure to the subgenre at all. Now, on top of the basic issue, it also doesnt fully succeed as a tutorial due to lack of investigation. Maybe i could let the basic case slide if there was a very brief investigation segment, so that all the tutorial elements could be out of the way going into the second case, but the lack of investigation means that some time has to be spent in the main game on "how to investigate". Yes, the case is mostly incomparable to others in the series, but in retort i want to point at the first case in the great ace attorney chronicles. As a "side series" entry, it also has some expectation to give an equally expansive tutorial. Many of the same building blocks are also present. A relative of payne oversees the opposition and is not the most competent (though Aouchi is still by far the most competent of the family), the case starts out very basic with little to no red herrings to deal with, the same "this is your first trial" quiz is present (with the same lack of penalties), and the tutorial only covers the courtroom side of the game. Where it exceeds First Turnabout is in its differences, though. For one, pressing, something vital to the courtroom gameplay, is introduced and taught to the player in a natural way. But for me personally, the biggest factor in favor of the later case is the difficulty. Sure, it starts simple enough, but even without an investigation, the trial ramps up in difficulty to the perfect extent to prepare the player for the rest of the game. Anyone can beat the First Turnabout without difficulty, but that does not mean they are ready for Turnabout Sisters. For chronicles, if you can beat the first case, you are ready for anything the game throws at you. And this is only the short version. Even without replaying the cases, i know i could have more to say if i spent more time reminiscing.

I actually first played Ace Attorney on a Java Phone, in 2005. I found the JAR file on one of those mobile sites and decided to load it up on my phone to give it a try. I was immediately hooked! Finding contradictions was so much fun! The breakdown were a joy to see! At the end, I sort of knew that the passport was the final nail in the coffin for Frank Sahwit, since it was the only piece of evidence I hadn't used yet. But the explanation made perfect sense! I had won the case on my first try with not a single penalty to my name! I saw the ominous text at the end and was ready for more... ...and then the game ended. It turned that the Java Game only contained the first case and that it was just a marketing tool to get you hooked to buy the full game. Oops. Still, I wanted more. I soon saved up and bought myself a DS, just to play the full version of this game. And to this day, I don't regret it! So, yeah, the first case of the game was the perfect hook, at least for me. It not only introduced me to the game's mechanics, but it also made me want to experience more of them.

I'm not a fan of the killer's identity being revealed up front (Frank Sahwit, Redd White, Richard Willington, Jacques Portsman, Kristoph Gavin (final boss not tutorials), Ted Tonate, Florent L'Belle and Pees'luben Andastandan). Even if the killer isn't a twist-villian, it still destroys the suspense around what the killer looks like due to the fact that the player already knows who they are before the player character get's to meet them. I think this case could have still worked if Frank's face was censored. When the player and Phoenix meet him there is a sence that he's sus, but the player doesn't know how many witnisesses are going to be called to the stand, meaning that their is enough doubt surounding his guilt. That all shadders when his final testemony breaks resulting in both you and Phoenix feeling in psynce with each other. I'm also not a fan of the killer's motive being revealed after the killer has been proven guilty. It makes the boss fight against them a lot less tence as you only have to focus on the how. Motive are important as they're there explain why the events in a story and plot of each case esspecialy if those cases are connected to the overarcing plot and story of the game happened the way they did. Finaly, this case forshadows stuff that happens later in the game, but it's kinda disconected from everything. "A mailman kills a woman in order to avoid getting arrested burgerally" doesn't feel all that important, now does. Keep in mind that the AA francise are visual novels and so having the tutorials be unimportant and unskippable only hurts replay value, which is important when you're talking about a game's prizing.

i actually really like that the killer gets revealed. it means you as the player can focus on finding out the reasons behind the crime, how it was done. i dont know about you, but i love overthinking and second guessing. in the cases where the killer isnt shown, i really struggle during those chapters! for all the wrong reasons! when the verdict is finally announced, rather than scream in joy, I'm often just confused. "huh? oh, guess he was the killer huh? i thought it was this guy! or maybe this guy! but no... it's this guy. i did it. yay me..." it inspired me on how to write mystery games on d&d. last mystery i ran, the players saw! they know who the killer was! they just had to prove it. saved both me the DM and the players a lot of pointless frustration, and could focus on the real fun parts of the mystery. it was fun having the killer taunt the players as they investigated too! they were so cocky and confident they would never get found, when the players finally proved it? ecstasy. besides, the story can still sometimes go on unexpected twists, and they can use that spoiler to their advantage to mislead and even surprise us, such was the case in chapter 2 of dual destinies. I was so certain L'Belle was the man in the costume. when it was revealed he wasn't!? i had to rethink everything to solve the case and prove how he did it!

@@remixtheidiot5771 you have your prefrences and have mine, however I would still like to say a couple of things in regards to this subject. I still believe that not showing who did the deed right away can still result some pretty insane plot-twists. Some examples that I can come up with are: the killer used a device in order to swap bodies with the victims before killing them, the killer pretended to be 2 people at the same in order to fool everyone into thinking they have an air-tight alibi and the person you originally finger as the killer ends up being innocent and the REAL killer is the 1 who manipulated you into getting the innocent person convicted. If I already know who did, than I'm just going to hyper-analyse everything they say resulting in me immediatly figureing stuff out way to fast. Ace Attorney is also usually pretty bad at hiding it's killers when their identities aren't shown. They're usually given "excotic" designs that scream "breakdown" and "villan transformation" resulting in you immediatly figureing out who did it, before the boss fights begins. Also - correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that most of the time the player doesn't need to point out who did it in order for the game to progress. It's either the player character fingering them when you're not in controle, another character accusing them of doing it or some peace being presented which results in them being summened inadvertenly. As for L'Belle, well I do agree that the twist involving him impersonating Damien and tricking Jinxi is pretty cool, it's everything else about the case that really drags it down. Like what are the odds that Filch desided to steal the McCuffin (I forgot what it's actually called so let's stick with McCuffin for now) on the exact same day as when L'Belle desided to enact his masterplan (The motive of which is so goofy I can't believe that the devs actually that it was ok for them to put it in the game, not knowing that murder is 1 of the most serious crimes someone can ever commit)? When it comes to the tutorial villians you know that the boss fight is going to start the moment they appear on screen. As for the non-tutorial villians, well it's more like you're scalling a metaforrical tower. The boss themselfs doesn't show their face ontill the end of the final investigation and when it's time for the final trial you know that it's going to be soley focused on the boss fight itself. L'Belle doesn't have this suspense factor and the devs make him super goofy which results in him not being intimitating in the slightest. I ultimately prefer the twist-villian approach when it comes to murder mysteries, because of the fact that you have battle an anonymus force. If you don't know WHO they are than you don't know WHERE they are and is you don't know WHERE they are than you don't know WHAT they are planning next. This motivates you to solve the case ASAP as you don't know if the killer wants to kill you next or if they plan on fleeing to Monaco, for example.

The only issue for the case as a hook is that law students (like me) and real life lawyers will have issues with how the cases are done. You need to do a little bit of research to know this is not based on the US justice system. It's a mix of both Japanese and USA. Once you know that, the game is much easier to enjoy at least in my experience. Having said that, I did notice some weird stuff like when in the second game (or maybe the third game) one witness said "I plead the fifth" so I don't incriminate myself which is weird IMO. Sure, the US audience will get this but again this game is not completely based on the US justice system. If anything, the witness simply should have said "I invoke my right to self-incrimination" or "I have the right to remain silent".
