Burt is a bit like Josie in the sense that it's very difficult for him to lie. It is true that he has skeletons in his closet, but the stuff he was convicted of happened 13 years ago when he was a 23-year-old. And he also did a lot of stuff to improve himself ever since, namely swearing off alcohol, despite his mental illness. People can redeem themselves, and Burt is, however imperfectly, trying to become a better person. Your mistakes do not have to follow you for the rest of your life.
