We are fishing the Indian River in Stuart, Florida going after the sheepshead! Our goal was to fish bridges, docks and any type of structure that holds barnacles and crabs, which are natural forage for sheepshead. We used live fiddler crabs and shrimp for bait.

How is the bycatch using worms? Been wanting to try them. We usually use mud crabs. Almost no bucatch.
@rainman6080
@rainman6080 Жыл бұрын
@@pokinatchapunkrawk not bad but will catch some others with them. Have caught spot and whiting occasionally. Pink worms will work too, imagine any of them would. If you are with the big sheepshead really don’t catch much else except them and a black drum. I regularly catch 20-24” sheepshead on them near bridge pilling on the down current side in SC. I get more small ones near docks than pilings and more bycatch. Lightest lead that will drop to the bottom and a 1/0 or # 2 octopus hook whatever is in my tacklebox at the time. Been using them for 15-20 years. If I have time to gather or the bait shop has them I use the fiddlers or oysters but for a quick after work kayak trip I use the worms. I can’t tell a difference between them in the number of fish caught. If you really want to have fun use a 16’ telescopic crappie pole pitching around the pillings for them. Crazy fight

Black drum actually do get upwards of that 50-60lb class range in Florida. Me and my dad used to go drop half a fist-sized blue crab underneath bridges right next to the pillars and catch em under the Gandy. 50lb mono, 50-60 flouro leader, 5 to 7/o mustad beak hook, 3oz egg on a Carolina rig. Usually about 3-4ft of leader. Havent been in years but im sure its just as good as its always been.

Great camaraderie around the people. BUT!!!! What really AMAZES me is when Victor fillets & cleans up these fish! HOW he never gets any blood on his pristine white long sleeve T-shirts!!!. Really enjoyed that video when he filleted the bluefin tuna from California. I cook as well. But I don't have Victor's gift. I have to apron up.:):)

Black drum, Florida get huge. I’ve Caught in the 60 pound range, fernandina bch. Jetty and south end inlet. I think Mrs Moore caught one weight 90 plus back in the day. Sheepshead was a favorite species in my youth. North jetty and fiddlers were the bait. So much fun to catch because of the challenge of the non existent bight. Excellent table fare.

Enjoyed the video. We have a great sheepshead fishery up here in Jacksonville. Sooo...the big black drum come up into the st. johns river to spawn from the first full moon in March to the full moon in April. They can be targeted the same way as our bull red run in the fall. Three way swivel set up, with deshelled blue crab on a circle hook. The locals don't "talk" loud about it, but if you get out there, you can catch them 70-100lbs. No bs. Good luck my friend. Tight lines

Every year for the past 21 years I’ve left my home in Fort Lauderdale to spend a week over summer fishing on Androscoggin lake in Leeds, Maine. I catch large and small mouth bass up to 6-8 lbs, pickerel, and white perch. There are trout in the lake also but I’ve never pulled one out myself during summer. I did see someone catch a rainbow trout in the lake once but I think you’re more likely to catch brown trout if/when you do. Anyway, it’s a beautiful place and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a scenic getaway. We stay at Angell Cove Cottages which is the best place on this lake, without a doubt. Maybe I’ll see you out there one year, Vic! We know a lot of the locals and get into lots of shenanigans so we can show you around town.

Another great one. There are no trash fish. Sheepshead are amazing. Mom didn't know how to fillet so we gutted, headed and scaled them. Cooked em in oil and flaked the meat off the skin. But my all time favorite "trash" fish are grunts. I will eat them over grouper any day. If you want big drum head over to Tampa bay and fish off the Gandy Bridge, if you still can. Of the cat walk we regularly caught 30 to 50 pounders when they are coming up into the bay to spawn. Wormy as all get out but it's tow truck fishing at it's best. Sheeps head hint; carry along an old garden hoe that you straightened out and scrape along the structure. Chum deluxe and it brings in everything.

I really like this video. I grew up in Pensacola, sheepshead were one of my favorite fish to catch. Growing up I couldn't always afford fiddler crab for bait so instead, I'd use whole hermit crab on a J hook and free lined the baits along bridge pilings, jetties, and docks. I would watch for either a line twitch or slack line moving off and set the hook. My PB was 10lbs. Hermit crabs were my go to bait. Sheepshead are great tasting because of their crustacean diet. You mentioned big black drum, you should hit up Bearded Brad in Orange Beach, AL. He catches monster sized drum locally.

I remember fishing in the Loxahatchee and the Jupiter Inlet as a kid. I hated hooking those little puffers. Watching them puff up was entertaining, but that's about all I like about them. I always loved sheepshead though. It was always my favorite part of winter after Christmas. FYI, if you want a good, low maintenance perennial leafy green that tastes a lot like spinach, look into getting some Okinawan spinach. It's native to Indonesia, so perfect for south Florida, and the underside of the leaves are purple, so Brooke would probably like that. The difference between it and store bought stuff is like fresh caught fish vs. the Publix frozen section. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Oh Man, Victor you were in my neighborhood. Those power lines are from a power plant I worked at for over 30 years, St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. Wish I knew you all were going to be in my area. Would have enjoyed meeting you all in person. Sheepshead bite is usually subtle. They take the bait in and crush it. Don't usually run. Kinda difficult to catch them when you are casting to them. Ideally you fish for them from above and put the weight at the bottom of the line and the hook about a foot above it. That way you feel the bite better. Some actually park the boat and fish from the bridge structure. We also will chum by scraping the barnacles from the bridge to get them to come around. , Mojarra's, Sand Perch are delicious and Black Drum can go over 100lbs. If you use blue crabs, cut in half you'll catch big Black Drum at the bridges. Good luck. Keep the videos coming. Especially the catch and cooks.

Looks like you’re fishing the Brevard County bridges (my stomping grounds). You are right where some big black drum live. Not too long ago, someone caught a 70 pounder underneath the 520 bridge. Bring some decently heavy gear, tear the top off of a blue crab, and let that puppy soak up against a piling. About 5 years ago I was also night fishing the north causeway in New Smyrna, folks were pulling in 20-40 pounders all night.

There's a little indentation right next to the dorsal fin on a sheepshead. You can get under the skin easily there and get a cleaner line on the top of those fillets. I like to eat sheepshead better than any other inshore fish.
