I enjoy mounting skin mount fish. I haven't done any reproductions yet!! I'm working on a 8 bluegill stringer mount now👍 my biggest mount so far was 39" northern ..awesome video and information 👍👍

Nice interview. I use to do fish mounts in a taxidermy shop 30+ years ago. 99% of our business was freshwater skin mounts. ( I too am pretty picky about how fish mounts look) . I didn't use those foam bodies I use the filler method , The fish is skinned and soaked in a liquid preservative for a couple of weeks to pickle the hide. The fish filler mix consist of ground up styrofoam with a cement binder powder added to it to it. You mixed the fish filler mix with water then stuffed it in the fish as you sew the skin up on the back side of the mount. I had a 2lb mud cat come in to be mounted one time, I explained to the customer that I had never done a skin mount on a catfish, That thing whipped my butt lol. It looked fine until it started to dry after I stuffed it, You could see every one of those little styrofoam balls through the skin, It looked about like the texture of a golf ball. Can you say Big Fail lol. Thankfully the customer was not upset. I did some Bass shoulder mounts back in the day on some fish that I caught and wanted to eat lol. We only charged $3.25 an inch back then lol boy have things changed lol.

I've been curious about taxidermy. I wouldn't mind getting my first big deer mounted or if I went on a fishing trip out of state to like the ocean and got a straight up monster fish I'd try to get that sucker mounted for sure.

I caught my PB largemouth out of an old farm pond this year. 6.28 ozs. I let her go and then thought.... Dang I should have taken some measurements first. Lol. 👍

I have seen the skin mount catfish had a man who skin mounted my largemouth bass he had several blue and flathead catfish he said it is absolutely possible he does it himself he said it is solely the taxidermist themselves decision whether or not they want to do it or not I want to clarify I'm not saying he is wrong I love podcasts to make discussions I personally like hunting and fishing but it's your decision on if you want to try to find skin mount personally I eat all catfish I would not mount one I only get bass bluegill or crappie or saltwater.saltwater fish are almost impossible to mount because of the skin oils and anatomy had a man who has been a taxidermy 45 years and he will not touch saltwater fish period just making a personally statement not being mean just saying that's not fully true it is possible to skin mount a catfish but he is right a lot of people don't do it I do skin because of price in my state
