Zero Mission is honestly the ONLY way to play the original Metroid. I'm an old man who remembers when the original came out and I've never liked it, Zero Mission was such a great remake!

had a fun time listening to this. i think mine'd be Zero Mission, Hollow Knight, Aria of Sorrow, Blasphemous and SOTN. although i've only played below 20 2d metroidvanias in total.

Rygar is a great game, no doubt, but it's more a platformer with some light rpg elements...kinda like Kid Icarus.

Circle of the Moon is a little stiff but imo better than Harmony of Dissonance for a number of reasons. Aria is probably the best overall. Dawn is good too, but the soul grind was too much and the seal mechanics aren't great. There's a rom hack that fixes a lot of that which moves Dawn of Sorrow into a best-metroidvania contender status.

Honestly the soul grind is part of the fun of that one imo, utilizing your luck stats to try and squeeze out every item/soul from every enemy is sooooo satisfying. But honestly, any game out of those handhelds you love is going to be great!

@@elviss8105 Buddy, Ori is on my list...did you even watch the video? Also, between Brendan and I we have played hundreds of these kinds of games and these are in our OPINION the five best ever made. Any list is subjective/opinion. These are what we consider to be with over 80 years over gaming experience between the two of us, to be the definitive best of that the genre has to offer.
