Oh wow! I stopped telling people that I am writing a book cuz it seems like I run into so many of the comparisons types. As soon as "I am writing a book" comes out of my mouth, they ask me what it's about. Then I discover the only reason they asked is because they want to tell me about how every idea is like some movie, tv show or book. What the heck is that? Then some professional writers have put my plot idea down without reading a word of it. I had two that had this condescending look on their face before I even started talking about my plot. Then they just ripped it to shreds. It's like they already decided they weren't going to like my plot idea before I told them about it. At least I know I'm not the only one going through this so I shouldn't take it personally or take it to heart. Thanks Jenna! You're funny and very helpful.

True Team Force What would the plotline be? Would the cat try to get out? Would they meet a cat to fall in love with and live in the void with them and have void kittens????? That would be so interesting wherever it would be taken.
@JShortsFR8 жыл бұрын
Steven Smith Well the current idea actually has a young boy and a talking cat living alone on an island that floats in an endless void. The cat acts as the boys guardian and teaches him but the boy grows restless and wants to see if there is really more to this world than just the island. Throw in notes and writings left by previous people who lived on the island and a realm of darkness far below the island called the Abyss and you can really do a lot! But I've kind of fallen away from that idea to something similar but also completely different because I felt the two main characters, the boy and cat, couldn't have a well developed story and thus seemed boring, one sided, and all together worthless in terms of character development. (Because there was nothing to develop.) But, ya know, it's still interesting.
@stevensmith6998 жыл бұрын
NOICE, though there isn't really anything that can be done with that unless something crazy happens like the boy and the cat fall off the island and find a world. Though idk how they'd live.

Soooo... late to the party, but the Gods of KZbin told me to watch this a year late. Anyhoo... "Why don't you get a real job" and "but what is your real job" are my two least favorite questions ever. Just because mah job doesn't require pants and getting up at 6am, that doesn't make it any less real. It pays my bills. Which is kinda the point of a job, right? RIght?! I mean, ideally you want to love your job too (ding ding ding!), but isn't the definition of "real" more to do with "is it paid work" and not "does it conform to my preconception of office-minion-ing"? Why hater does not think so. Why hater DOES think that the "fakeness" of my job luckily frees me up to run errands, hang out, do favors, help him move, etc. Because... well, it's not like I have a real job that I have to be at or anything.

I haven't found many of these haters yet, but my parents HAVE told me that I should "reconsider" and get a real job. I'm most likely going to be a part-time writer lol The good thing is that since I am almost done with the second draft of my manuscript, they have gotten more supportive!! I just have to warn them that my story has a lot of violence and when they get to the end, I don't want them to think that I'm a psychopath lol

Jenna Moreci Here's a couple ideas - if you've already done them, then don't pay attention to me - I'm insane! 1. How do you kill off a character in which you've become emotionally invested? I wanted kill one of my characters but I think she may be one of my favorites now so I'm having a hard time. 2. How do you go about choosing a good editor? I'm not there yet but I will be eventually. Hope this helps! Love the videos, keep them coming!

When I told my mother I'm writing a fantasy novel and told her about the basic plot (17 years old girl has strange things happening around her and then finds out she's got magic powers) her first reaction was 'So, like superman?' And I looked at her with an expression that clearly said 'are you kidding me?'

I've met "I don't like reading guy". He used to be a friend of mine, and actually I was writing something based on an acting game we had done together... We were supposed to write the book together, but he only pitched a few lines, since he thought details were boring... He actually said something along the lines of, "Plot is the only thing that matters" or something like that... He got mad because I took out the lines he pitched, since they didn't match the characters that well... He also got mad because his character from the acting game got killed in what used to be the first book, back before I had to break it in half for it being too long... He thinks I was being totally unreasonable... I don't know... What do some of you think? Oh, and he had the nerve to say he should get paid when it gets published. Although he came up with most of the plot in the acting game, after so much editing it's almost nothing like it at all.
@creationartnation40038 жыл бұрын
Well, I would feel a bit angry if my work was cut out. But the thing is, it was just a few plot lines, so he shouldn't be angry. YOU did basically most of the work so having him get all the money is out of the question. Honestly, I wouldn't know what to tell him, but I know where you are coming from.
@nicolless518 жыл бұрын
CreationArtNation Thank you.
@Irmatu8 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming there's no documentation to show how you both pitched in on the acting portion of the game, and combined with the fact none of his material was used then no -- he cannot get paid for any of that work. I understand he got upset over a killed off character, but it happens. I would have shrugged and said, "Congrats dude. Welcome to the world of writing where ANYONE can die at any time. Yours was just sooner than others."

I have been writing for a long time. I'm still waiting for the haters. Obscurity is the only sure defense against haters. (This much I know). But as soon as you achieve something, you're going to get some. I think you've nailed it. It's 99 percent jealousy. There is of course, the other one, the I Could Do That Guy: "I could writing a book too, but with work and all the time I spend curating my two thousand piece garden gnome collection, I just don't have the time. But if I did have the time, it would be a bestseller, for sure." And then they sit back looking self satisfied, like this pronouncement on its own is the equivalent to topping the New York Times bestsellers list. I would be a poor beta reader, because I would find it hard to say anything negative about someone's book. I know how hard it is to write one. And my first book was a real dog, but just finishing it was an achievement. And with each one, you improve. The hope is that you're not improving from such a low base that you die of old age before you make it.

Jenna Moreci haven't touched it since 2012 :/ I read it recently it's okay. It has Alien in it and a female protagonist. It's a futuristic setting as well. They're others out therw like her but she hunt them. She's a pure blood of the species. It wasn't like X-Men but most the characters had killer/ unique abilities. I might revise it because it's 2012 work. I had very abysmal writing back then lol listening to this video made want to bring it back.

Hey, +Jenna Moreci, I'm a pretty new subscriber of yours (like within the last week) and I've been catching up on some of your earlier content. This one has over 350 comments so I'm not sure if you're responding to any further comments on this thread, but I still wanted to say -- EXCELLENT WORK! I especially liked the part where you talk about not judging "genre specific" work. That said, I generally don't read fiction, and have NEVER successfully finished a fiction piece myself (though I have started one several times). Of course, that was prior to listening to you talk about the importance of outlining. I truly think that's why I've lost focus on my fiction in the past. Also, there have been exceptions where I have enjoyed, very much I might add, a good piece of fiction. Your book is one of them! I also, NEVER judge someone who writes fiction, just because I rarely read it, enjoy it, or write it myself. I am currently put much of your advice into practice, but am in NO WAY ready to actually get out there full swing yet. I would like to extend a proposal offer to you, though. I would LOVE to become one of your "Beta's" for your sequel! I'm not real sure how that works, especially since I'm a subscriber to your channel and a huge fan, but I assure you, I most CERTAINLY contain the ability to remain objective. Be it family disputes, arguments between friends, product reviews, or whatever the case; I am well known by my family and friends for remaining objective. Whether it's attributed to be a Libra, with the whole "scales" thing (something I'm not sure that I believe or don't believe in) or my upbringing, or something else entirely -- I assure you that I can and will remain objective. Just a thought, but a hopeful one! Either way, lemme know please, assuming you're still reading old threads with several hundred comments that is. Now, all I want to do is go grab some pizza and be happy piecing my current project together. Again, very inspiring stuff. Keep up the good work! Thanks, Ben Wolfinger

You can have similarities and still have original content. Just because one book has humans in it, does that mean every book after that written with humans is UN-original ? Ever compared Hunger games and Divergent. Or Vampire diaries and Twilight. Similar novels can still have original content, characters, and originality isn't the entire goal. You can still have engrossing characters, ambitious and thrilling plot lines, and a mind blowing romantic subplot without having original content. It could be a werewolf and vampire novel and still be amazing simply because its so magical, and well written, with in depth characters and descriptive detail. Write on people Write on

Personally, I sympathise a little with hater 4. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you should rule out entire genres for no reason at all. But it does come down to personal taste. I'll read pretty much anything, but there are limits and there's there's a couple of genres that are just not for me. Not that I would say that to someone who's just written a book in that genre, cos that just seems rude. And I definitely wouldn't judge the person that reads/writes books I'm just not interested in. Love these videos by the way!
@JennaMoreci9 жыл бұрын
lambykins1471 It totally comes down to personal taste, but I personally would never tell someone "ew, I HATE fantasy" after they told me they're writing fantasy, nor would I judge them for it. I have no sympathy for rude people :P
@lambykins14719 жыл бұрын
Jenna Moreci Yeah, I agree. That's phenomenally rude. I get what you mean now- people like that just think they're the centre of the universe. I guess I just meant there's a couple of genres that I'm not crazy about, so people shouldn't feel bad if I'm not into something they recommend. Or if someone asked me to read their book in a specific genre that I don't like, I'd just politely point out I'm probably not their target audience, but would be happy to give it a try anyway.
@JennaMoreci9 жыл бұрын
Totally, I'm with you 100% on that. This happens to me all the time when it comes to music. Someone will ask if I like So-And-So's new song and I'll say "oh, I don't listen to pop music." And I get the stink eye! Dude, it's okay to not like the same stuff, you know :P

I have one question though , in a video you mentioned that you wanted to be a writer since you were 6 years old , when did you actually started working to fulfill your dreams?
@JennaMoreci9 жыл бұрын
depends on your definition. I wrote consistently for my whole childhood in hopes of achieving my dreams. I had my first poem published when I was 14. Once I got to college, I took a writing break because I felt pessimistic about my chances of being successful. Then, after college, I started pursuing it again, this time with much more maturity and confidence. I had some shtuff published in magazines and what not and then started EVE.
