The Five Paragraph Essay

Students learn how to write an essay for the 2002 series GED(r) test, how to: brainstorm ideas for the topic they are presented with, organize the ideas, write a topic sentence, and write an introductory and concluding paragraph. They also learn what to expect in the testing situation, for example, that the topic is given, that they have to brainstorm ideas without getting blocked, and that they will not have time to draft and re-copy a final essay.
Five paragraph essay lessons like this one, while still pertinent for some high school equivalency tests such as the ETS HiSET test (available in Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Jersey, Tennessee and Wyoming), are no longer the best preparation for the 2014 series GED(r) test.
In this lesson students are given the topic: "What qualities do you think make up a good employer? Write an essay that identifies the qualities you think a good employer has, giving specific examples to back up your ideas."

All I can say is this teacher knows how to teach!!!! This teacher deserves props as she is the type of teacher I would love to have. Coming into this video, I had no idea how to do the essay part of the GED ,After sitting here listening to this teacher, I now walk away knowing exactly how to write the GED essay .Thanks to this teacher I will now pass my essay part of the GED. This teacher took her time and explained everything word for word. This teacher deserves a BIG pay raise.

I am an experienced GED English teacher. When searching for a video about pre-writing, I came across this short movie. The teacher does a really good job of conveying her ideas to the students. Thank you!

I graduated in 1981 and I will be 50 years old in 7 days and I just started College to earn my degree in order to become a RN so never say never Buddy. Grown ups have real life going on that makes education be put on the back shelf for many years. It could be you in 3 or 4 decades from now so chill Buddy and be proud we aren't living off your parent's taxes.

You are right about one thing, you are never too late to learn anything regardless of if you graduated from high school or not. The biggest mistake people make that once you graduated from high school or college, you are done with learning.

Taking the GED as an adult -- especially if you have not attended school in this country or if you have been out of school a long time, is much harder than just finishing high school. All these adult learners who have passed the GED -- a difficult test, normed on graduating high school seniors -- deserve our congratulations!

I am not preparing for GED but just searching some interesting video on essay writing in general and found this nice video. Pretty good trainer loved her energy, enthusiasm and approach basically the way she took the discussion ahead towards achieving the goal of essay writing in structured manner.

I'm having a problem with the length of my essay. I followed your format with the topic of "Some people argue that the United States should not interfere in other countries' internal affairs, but others say that it is our country's moral responsibility to come to the aid of starving people. Which view do you take?" The GED essay is only supposed to be 250 words on average, but mine was climbing up over three hundred when I checked. How short are these paragraphs supposed to be, exactly?

@himewho you: High school was distracting for many, some people had other responsibilities early in life, and some like me chose the military after high school. You have to respect people returning to school years later. Hope you make it that far down the road, because right now, you're too young to have that type of vision. You have no kids, no bills, house notes, rent, job, husband, or wife. Tomorrow ain't promised child, but hope you graduate, live long, and prosper.

It's cool that you're in school trying to learn more, but people learn differently or have several different reasons that they return to school later in life. You have no idea of what the future holds for you, none of us do. Some people return because high school was distracting, and some people went into the military after they graduated and have retired and are still trying to learn, you have no clue of what life may throw your way. Be careful kid, be very careful, tomorrow ain't promised.
