This is really incredible. The stories are shifted around a bit and some major differences from the most common versions-- for example to the Mexica the four Tezcatlipocas are usually considered to be Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, Xipe Totec and Huitzilopotchli. Quetzalcoatl is traditionally the second sun and Chalchiutlicue was the fourth sun, and the rain of fire was sent by a moping Tlaloc out of anger at humans for their continued pleas for rain. But there are many versions of the same stories, probably because the mythologies of many different cultures were slowly merged over thousands of years. Such as how Huitzilopotchli was supposedly birthed by Coatlicue and then killed Coyolxhauqui and the southern stars, but then he's also an original Tezcatlipoca born of Ometeotl? You'll go crazy looking for consistency in Mexica stories, but then that's the nature of the oral tradition. The "official" version is just the one some Spanish priest eventually wrote down!

For everyone this story is new to: Every part of this story is normally told by itself as stand alone tale, meaning everything that happens here can be greatly elaborated on and has so much more nuance to it. Personally I find Xolotl and his two main stories to be inspiring and enheartening in a way I have found no other figure in any other story to be like. This comment is not a good place to lay out the details but even though Xolotl's stories seem sad, and they are, especially once you start picking up on the nuance, Xolotl persists through his constant, inherent inferiority and he works to help all of those who end up in a position like his own, at times that being all of humanity. Xolotl continually brought fire to man and in many ways he still does. If how he was presented in this video resonated with you even a little bit, I ask that you please read or listen to his stories in full, they are not long and I think you will gain much for it.

First virgins were never a prize like they were in Europe, 2nd cannibalism was very rare and only done on special occasions, 3rd slaves in Aztec times were much more better treated then in Europe, 4th... 250,000 slaves is a load of horse manure. You know nothing... because of the European invasion nearly 100 million Native Americans were killed. So where is a similar number found in Aztec history?

You guys are sick, I'm glad this religion didn't expand across the world. We would be having human sacrifices and other disgusting stuff today if it lived. Nobody is saying that Europeans didn't do anything wrong, we know that. But you have to stop acting like the Aztecs never did anything, they sacrificed and murdered anyone that wasn't Aztec, they acted just like Europeans, conquering and pillaging village after village. They sacrificed so much people that it was one of the reasons for the collapse of their Empire. Unlike you people, we aren't ones saying that human sacrifice is a good thing.
@obzidianbladez28735 жыл бұрын
@@olympia5758 This religion still exists and it's being teached to native youth today. Aztec Philosophy was based on science, Aztec religion was on the path that was moving away from Gods. I'm a little confused could someone help me answer a few of my questions. 1.)They view the "God's" as natural phenomenons rather than some divine deity? If so, is it even called a mythology or is it something else? 2.) This question is more like the chicken and the egg. Did they come up with a "god" after discovering the natural phenomenon or did they have a "God" and added more things they ruled over as they discovered new natural phenomenons? 3.)If the Aztecs don't believe in a concept of a god or goddesses that have power of whatever the hell it is they had the power to do but rather a natural occrying thing why did they even come up with them let alone worship them? Is it to help kids at a young age have a better understanding of the world but if thats the case then why build temples or shrine or preform sacrifices or ceremonies? 4.) More of a personal question but still. Does anyone know any good books that talk about Meso American civilization and gods, and where to find them?
@AlexaAXAG5 жыл бұрын
They didn't have the context of a "God" they were all "spirits" representing some things. The mesoamerican civs had very similar deitys, the Mayans had their own version of Quetzalcoatl called Kukulkan the Teotihuacan people had some similar too... Some of the "gods" have been worshipped by multiple people at different times for different reasons. Thus i don't really know how they came up with their meaning of each things so I'mma stop right here.

1) They're divine, but human at the same time from what I observe. They make mistakes and the mistakes lead to interesting outcomes. It's a mythology because it is a religion people believe in, but isn't scientifically true. The sun isn't a living creature floating around the earth, it's a ball of gas in one place with the earth going around it. That's the only difference between myth and reality really. 2) I don't know. I don't think anyone can really tell what causes religions to form, but it might be due to traumatic or impacting experiences people had. Maybe someone discovered they could farm corn, and wrote it down as a religious like experience for them to harvest the corn. For early humans harvesting a crop they planted might've seemed magical and sacred in some way. I don't think the aztec gods rule over anything, they kinda just do what they want and try to keep the humans alive when they get the chance. They have abilities like wind, fire, and stuff, but I don't think it means they control all aspects of it entirely. 3)Some of the stories are to teach kids about astronomy, history, and morals in a fun entertaining way using their religious figures. I think that's why too aztec stories are a lot more fun and silly than other religions since it's mainly to be told to kids during a school setting using puppets. Like any culture they had traditions and religions too, so it makes sense they would worship and do rituals with their gods. There's a big emphasis on the importance of taking care of pregnant women, warriors, and the disfigured. Not to mention how all of the gods gathered to give the disfigured one the highest ranking amongst them. It's kinda like keeping village morals in a way. You put all your effort into caring for the pregnant, the injured, and the ill before caring for the well built, and in the likely event one of the sacred dies they gather for a ritual to wish their loved ones farewell. A modern day example of this many probably don't even think about is funerals. Why do we host funerals if no direct worship is occurring? Little rituals to say goodbye to someone and honor them basically. 4)Here on youtube theres a cartoon series called "No Evil" that covers many of the aztec stories in a cute way. You can probably find some online somewhere, but like you I have difficulty finding them. What I do find is usually a native american retelling a story they heard a shaman tell at a village meeting.

I know the four squares around the sun face in the aztec sun stone. represent the four previous suns right, but to the way I read it and see it as a calendar, its the four seasons a yr. A circle represents a yr. Its math n geometry. Thats how the Gregorian was fixed. 12x30 =360 12 hrs round. no 13 month calendar can fit. 13x28 364 over the circle. So 360 5 day left over. You add them to seven months woth the two days from feb. March, spring the real new year. The aztec sun stone had tha sacred calendar. 13x20. 260x20 5200 the 20 glifs. They already had the 365 days inside the circle. But iff because moon cycles every 28 days. So the Gregorian is accurate but fixed. Aztec had it already pretty much. 52 yr round. Same as 52 weeks a yr. 365÷52=7 7 days a week .

But this got some wrong unless I got my research wrong, which i doubt since I confirmed it through multiple sources, but north is black Tezcatlipoca, East is Xipe Totec, south is Huitzilopochtli, and west is white Tezcatlipoca.

The history of the indigenous peoples in the Americas is much, much older than a few thousand years. We judge the Maya, Aztecs, Inca’s and others on the traces that we find. But when we dig our way from the present to the past, we must know that the Earth is suffering from a cycle of recurring natural disasters. That is told in the Popol Vuh. These disasters create a cycle of civilizations. There are four primitive civilizations. Sometimes mentioned a sun or world era. The next civilization lives in the fifth sun. This becomes eventually a high developed civilization that disappeared 20,000 years ago. Then the cycle starts again. During the first 4 suns the people were guided by alien deities. Also at the start of the fifth sun. At a certain moment in time, those deities leave the people alone. Led by fanatic priests, the people start offering more and more often and from fruits and animals, they started offering children and humans. They knew that after death, new life would occur and they wanted the deities to return. That is how the Aztec are remembered, but once they were high educated. They left us the sun stone, which is a 20,000 years old warning for this recurring disasters. To learn much more about the cycle of disasters and civilizations, recurring floods, ancient high tech and alien deities, read the e-book: "what I know about Nibiru". You can read it nicely on every computer, tablet or smartphone. Just search for: know Nibiru

I sometimes wonder if the 5 suns is a story showing the 5 layers of atmosphere acting as dynodes in a model of earth similar to a PMT or electron multiplier. The sun rotates 5 speeds and I wonder if our moon shows where we're At in this scale. Close to the equator right now possibly which may be an alignment to propel the magnified light.

NOPE, it is a partial allegoric true account of human history on Earth. The Sun we have was NOT there before, planet Saturn was once our sun, much dimmer, would not burn and no days, always dim light.

They did not "worship" them, but honored them. Remembering their sacrifice for the whole. Its a concept that preserved their way of life for centuries. By reenacting their rituals, the nahuas (all nahua speaking peoples, not just the Mexica) believed that the 5th world would continue. (The World is still comprised of the Ancient Gods so they are not dead but now all part of the living 5th Age/World.) Lots of concepts of metamorphosis, purification, humility, love, patience, intelligence. So much metaphor. Its a great way maintain a social structure with high values. Too bad the European historians had to demonize every aspect Nahua peoples life. Now we see only evil where good and purity abide. Peace to the Ancestors.
