I just watched this video for the first time. Concerning that guys comment - gatekeeper. Ive been a scale modeler if variouse subjects since the late 60's, im now 63yo, i remember back the earlier i was working for a large government contract oriented electronics company, after a couple of years i moved from the essembly line floor into an engineering group with paint shop and small machine shop, i learned alot in the 4 -5 years in this group, especially the model group who built small scale mockups for presentation purposes, everyone on that small team called themselves a scale modeler, though they worked with wood, cardboard, posterboard, sheet metal, and raw plastic PVC, polystyrene, etc. Heaven fobbid if you called them or their work anything but a model. Heck they're landscaping and diorama skills were second to none. I learned so much from them. Anyway i really like FSM both tge magazine and online. Great video you all.

Some of the worse gatekeepers and people are members of local IPMS’s, especially those tasked with judging contests. A friend of mine and I were at a local contest and we overheard a judge say he would not even waste his time with a particular model in the competition. When we asked him why, he said he “hated” that particular subject. We also saw others openly and loudly mocking and laughing at people’s models, manhandling and breaking models, and the kicker was pretty much all the winners were members of that local chapter. I found out about that only because many called out all the judges afterwards. I tried in the past joining local chapters but I found most of the members were arrogant and not helpful at all in promoting our hobby.

You can use Bob Smith Industries (BSI) Gold on clear plastics. Also, I have purchased the replacement caps for the larger bottles in like a qty of 10, very valuable in a hobbyist tool kit.

We must be inclusive, i don't care if your painting model figures, building kits of planes, converting locomotive kits or scratch building spaceships that can not exist in this universe due to physics , just enjoy yourself and never put anyone down for trying. Personally i like "what if" kits and hate it when a "rivet counter" points out "mistakes" without realizing that the model is of a plane that never existed. but "to each his own"

Well said regarding gatekeeping, let’s not get caught up on the details and remember the more the merrier. I remember a few years back when Airfix was struggling and Hornby took over. I really thought it was all going down hill, but now look how far it’s come and the new companies out there. Added to this 3d modelling has been able to give us abilities we never had before. So by adding and not segregating these new ideas we have been able to see some truly incredible builds. So let’s remember we are all here to have fun and trade ideas. We are a strong community but only with unity we will become stronger! ✌🏻

I very strongly agreed with Tim on Tamiya Extra-Thin, it's one of the best things I've bought for modelling. However, I've gone through various brands of plastic cement over the years (with a UK bias, so Citadel, Revell and Humbrol) and to be honest I now use a pot of Tamiya's standard glue (white lid) for more substantive jobs like two halves of wings or internal seams where neatness isn't necessary but strong joins are. I'll use a combination of the two to get a good fit for the most part. I've not tried any of the more specialist superglues, I tend to use whatever form of Loctite I've found when out and about. I'll have to look into the Elmer glue for clear parts, etc., that could be a good shout and it's not hard to get hold of.

I used to use a Testors liquid cement which was pretty much the same thing, I can't really find it anymore so Tamiya's product is my go to for thin glue. As for super glue, I quite like the Tamiya gel-type super glue.

I use mostly Tamiya Extra Thin Quickset, and Tamiya Regular. Lots of time both at the same time. Small part, don't want to hold it, swipe some Tamiya Regular on it to hold it in place, and then hit it with the Quick Set.

Speaking of rubber tyres (tires?), I mentioned a kit in my stash in a previous video, the Italeri Katyusha Stalin Organ, that's an old kit. I read somewhere that rubber tyres in old kits can have a detrimental effect on plastic parts, if they come into contact with them for long periods. So I got the kit out of my stash and, yep, the tyres had been sitting against one of the sprues with the rims (the truck has quite a few rims considering the number of wheels the vehicle has), several of the rims were 'melted', also one of the figures provided (not such a tragedy as the figures aren't that great). But I bought some 'Blue Stuff' some time ago, so I figured I'd simply make a mould (mold?) with one of the undamaged rims and make several new ones. So, if you have any old kits with rubber tyres check they aren't sitting against any parts on your sprues to avoid any damage.

Licensing costs are also a part of the issue with F1 kits - not just the teams but all the sponsors. That's why Tamiya's Red Bull RB6 and Ferrari SF 70H kits were so expensive and only available for a limited time - the teams don't do long term deals. Ebbro, NuNu, Beemax, and now Meng are doing historical F1 kits where the licensing will generally be easier, especially for the teams that no longer exist. Eric - F1 Model Guy....

I've read Adam's editorial and I have no idea what the heck the letter writer is talking about. All are welcome in this hobby no mater what it is that you love doing was what I got from the editorial. Perhaps the letter writer (who states he has not built models in years) considers opening the gates wide open believes this is some form of gatekeeping of those who don't build models anymore.

It's a hobby and if you treat it otherwise you are doing it wrong. Build whatever you enjoy and consider trying a new or different genre from time to time to expand your skills and perspective. I have started experimenting with Ammo Ultra Glue for PE parts and I have been using GS Hypotube cement for clear parts for many years (I think I learned about it from an old FSM article). I have recently had issues with my older thin and medium CA glues not bonding parts after a few months (the glue is not hardening in the container yet) so I am buying the smallest bottles now. I enjoyed seeing Tim and Aaron in San Marcos. I will be looking forward to the video this coming Friday to see how that elevator ride turned out.

Good episode 🎥🎬🏅 The 1/32 TBD looks like a great kit. A lot us have probably built the 1/48 Monogram TBD back in the day. It's too bad that only Revell Germany can seem to keep 1/32 kit prices at a reasonable level though. I agree about buying small bottles of super glue. EVERY time I would buy a large bottle (and use half of it) the other 50% would dry up and be unusable. The gatekeeping segment was interesting, but it would have helped if you explained what the editorial had stated in the first place (for those of us who do not have the issue of FSM that the reader was responding to.) Hopefully he threw his magazine in the recycle bin, and not the trash. 😜

I think the some of the gate keeping is partly due how long the hobby has been a solo venture which social media is rapidly turning into a "team sport" where people's long held beliefs and processes are being championed or challenged, there's team weathering, team no weathering, team never airfix, team tamiya above all etc and it can get quite heated. It can be hard to remember that's there's no one way to enjoy the hobby.

I used to follow a lot of model companies and builders on Facebook, but the bickering just got too frustrating. I continually commented that the point of the hobby (or any hobby) is to have fun and enjoy what you are doing. If YOU like it, that is good enough! That message didn't always go over well. I only follow 2 or 3 model-based Facebook pages now.

If you have access to a 3D printer, you can find Epoxy bottle holders that hold the bottles upside down. Especially in cooler weather this can save a bit of frustration. Bottles vary in size, so measure your to make sure it will fit before printing it. Or, if you are or know a wood worker, it's a simple task to build a holder out of wood. For either type, I like have a little reservoir that sits under the tip to catch any drips - many of the 3D designs incorporate this into the print.

Hey Tim, for more than 20 years I have exclusively used BSI super glue until recently when I started using Loctite Professional super glue, it bonds quicker and stronger.

I agree, and use loctite now as well. I like the bottle design, for ease of applying the glue. I also use it for gaps, since it doesn't shrink like putty does.

Gatekeeping discussion: Reminds me of the age old discussion on what was scratch building R/C airplanes. One camp said as long as it was not a kit, and another camp said, so that was plans building, you had to design it. Another camp said, no you needed to slice/mill your own balsa...bla bla bla. With the proliferation of Almost Ready to Fly planes, this topic is moot, at least at our field.

I miss the Tennax7R, never liked the smell of the Tamiya extra thin. I haven't read that gatekeeping thing yet, but I've always thought FSM did a good job of all types of kits. Sure, there are some kinds that i don't plan to build like airliners, but that doesn't mean i can't appreciate the work that goes into them. And i might even find a technique that carries over to what i build.

All good glue choice. I like to use Tamiya regular thin cement (with the orange cap) for joining larger pieces. Also, Tamiya's quick drying extra thin (light green cap) has been a life saver when gluing on very small parts because it evaporates so quickly and leaves only a minute trace in case of overgluing.

So, if I build a gate out of popsicle sticks, and I keep it... then I am a modeler. Say yes, or I'm pitching a fit! Tim, I use all the glues you mentioned with great success. I've used the Bob Smith 5 min. epoxy as well. The only difference between it and a lot of the other 5 min. epoxy's I have used, is Bob charges way too much.

Great episode! Once again, creating scale models (of ANYTHING) stands out as one of the oldest hobbies in history. I'm on the same page with you about this hobby being open to anyone, regardless of the type of model they're working on. Life's too short to be caught up in trying to put up barriers around a hobby with such a rich history. Now, changing gears a bit, I've got a question about glue. I've been using Tamia extra thin for years, but I've only recently given the Revell glue a try. My question is: when and where would you choose one over the other? The F1 cars answer is the licensing and royalties. Same reason all their Ferrari kits are discontinued and no longer available in the market. It's been know among modelers that the companies are asking more and more where it's no longer sustainable to some companies business plans with exceptions. As for how popular it is in Japan, Honda is the engine provider to Red Bull till 2025 and Aston Martin from 2026 onward, so they have 2, soon to be 3 championships under their wing, they have a japanese driver in the Alpha Tauri team and you can see how passionate they're when you see each year's grand prix in Suzuka. So, lack of popularity and subjects are not the reason.

To keep super glues for a longer time keep them in the freezer. I have had glues for years and they are still perfect to use.

We've known hobbyists who have refrigerated their superglue (freezer is a new one though). I prefer not to put those sorts of materials in proximity to foodstuffs, even if they're in their own container. Too much of a risk of something going wrong. -TK

I found an old xacto set on ebay, they called it a "miniaturist tool set", So I now refer to myself as a miniaturist, seems to me a more inclusive name. Also, my 2 main glues are Tamiya Extra Thin and a bottle of Testors Model Master Liquid Cement that is AT LEAST, 25 years old. In fact it is stamped 1994 on the bottom, so yeah...Plus I have a couple of BSI Super's and I bought an orange pot of Tamiya "normal" cement earlier this year as a "just in case" for when/if that Testors bottle finally gives up the ghost...

Thanks! Two-part epoxy is useful for anything you're assembling that is going to require strength once built. Primarily, I use it on large-scale resin figures and multimedia builds. -TK

I've always been frustrated by the attitude that we all must "mature into super-detailing, historical perfectionists" (my words, no one else's) eventually, no matter what "level" we're currently at, or what type of replicas we like creating. Tamiya F-1 kits. Same as why they don't do Ferrari kits anymore. All comes down to licensing cost. Tamiya X thin glue vs Revell glue. Pretty much redundant. Comes down to the applicator.

Hi Scott! Yeah, as many have pointed out, we left out the licensing aspect, too. But that also plays directly into what works for the home market. No reason for licensing if its not going to go big with your main market. @@FineScaleModelermagazine Have never used the Revell stuff, so not sure if it is slower than Extra Thin (which I just use Tamiya Regular, with an Extra thin cap and brush) or thinner and faster, which I just use Tamiya Extra Thin Quickset. Find myself using more and more of the Quickset than the regular Extra thin these days, unless I am doing tracks.

KZbin model builders use little tabs of Tamiya thin glue. I try doing the same and model falls apart almost by it self. Frustrated, after few attempts, I end up almost smearing whole model with glue. Just like Calvin & Hobbs comic strip.

No, plastic cement will work. However, you will want to scrape off the chrome plating where you'll be applying the glue because it will interfere with the adhesion.

Also, Testors clear parts cement and window maker is a product that I've used with great success for a few years now (Testors product #3515). MODEL ON! And, regardless of the subject matter, if you endeavor or struggle to make small things look real.... you might simply be a fine scale modeler and not necessarily an agitated "gate keeper". That e-mail sounded pissey to the point where there might be something else going on there.... anger issues. That person's likely not having a lot of good fun with the hobby if he has to be so negative and combative over other perspectives.

The TBD is a nice change but seems like every thing else is either more of the same, look another ME-109, spitfire, P-51, or Bismarck or something so vague that I've never heard of it. How about something more historically significant like say 1/72 Boeing model 299/ XB-17, or maybe a XB-15? What about the USS Salt Lake City. !st of the US treaty cruisers that saw more action then the entire German surface navy

About F1 cars... their design do change every single year. Creating the tools(molds) for models takes lots of time and money. There is possibility that when new scale model hits the market F1 season will be ending already and this car migh be loosing. 😂 I cant blame companies for releasing older cars that reached cult status and ignoring new ones. Its just financially safer that way. There is also matter of licenses that aren't cheap and that modelmakers are bit "nationalistic" - prefering their local stuff. Gatekeeping is sadly nothing new. People telling me what is allowed on the public exhibitions was a thing ages ago, before the internet. With the growing popularity of the hobby in social media it just returns with vengence.

Homie probably has a long time magazine subscription in the mail. You know he has a shelf above-the-bench dedicated to perfectly lined back-issues of FSM. FSM magazine IS THE BEST!! Enjoying the new two part onbox and workbench format. Hobby Lobby is starting to downsize kit selection. Please look into this if possible.
