Excellent restoration and testing, man! 😃 And I absolutely agree, you need to work in the way it's more comfortable to you! Happy new year! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Looks good and nice of your friend to gift it to you. I've got a couple of them and need to get them tuned. I've used one of them, it's a "tap tap" version, and I like it better than any of my Stanley planes. Enjoy your new plane!

That is awesome! They are super nice to use and I'm deff gonna keep my eye out for more! Thank you!!

Great job on the plane. As long as you aren't getting tracks, there's no reason to spend hours straightening the leading edge. I would love to see you do a video one day on the Union X5a (equivalent of Stanley 5 1/2).
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
Ahh! I would love to try a union x! I had a union x8 for a short time never got to try it then sold it (rough times) but one day I will try one! I have heard great things! kzbin.info5tKUGsjeE6E?si=YGrbHrtsQ15f0meA

I'm a right-handed pro chef who occasionally gets right wrist pain (tendonitis?) bad enough that I have to move my blade to my left hand for cutting. It's not pretty, mostly a lot slower, but I can do the job with my non-dominant hand. I suspect that if I had to switch from the right hand to the left on a permanent basis I'd be well over 90% as effective with my new hand after a moderate amount of time.
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
Thank you!! That is encouraging to hear and I believe you are correct. Imma go baby steps. Planes then maybe saws. I've been practicing sawing lefty and it's easier once the cut is started but I haven't tried for like dovetails and detail cuts yet. That would make a funny video haha

Good for you…I’m left handed and even I think planing lefty feels wrong!

Hey, Jamie, loving your videos. Do you or anyone else have any experience with planes from Axminster?
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
Hey! Thank you! I don't BUT they look identical to the TayTools and the Grizley hand planes. I tested out a TayTools plane and I was impressed for the price: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH7am3WXjreWnassi=wBMrWOvk33UTFZ89

@ oh wow, you’re absolutely right and they tell you if it’s made in the UK, which they are not. Still not going to cheap out on a 5 1/2 or probably a 4, but looking to fill in possibly with some adequate ones. Hope you figure out the wrist thing!

"tap taps" are my go to for soft woods and planes larger than jacks, once you tune it up they work great, by the way since you looking into pulling planes, have you tried japanese planes?
@BatCaveCreations2 күн бұрын
I tried the cheepest Amazon Japanese plane and love it BUT my friend is paying for me to attend the Japanese Hand Plane Course with Wendill Castle this summer and I am VERY excited to really give them a try!!

@@BatCaveCreations That sounds great, I always think about getting one, but then I look at my shelf full of 20+ metal and wooden push planes and realize that another one would be a bit much.

So I’m impressed with the MDF (I assume) flattening. I assume you find that “flat enough”?
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
I do! I prefer plywood but didn't have a long enough piece at the time haha if you store mdf flat it will stay flat but I store it standing up so I have to remember to flip it over every so offten but I've had that for maybe 2 years now. Don't remember and it's good enough for me till I get enough spare plywood to make one. Actually... now that I think about it I may have enough plywood to glue it in pieces underneith! That would be a good addition as long as it doesn't get too heavy. Sorry thinking out loud haha

@ thanks for the info, and embarrassed that I never thought of that.

Jamie what did I see you using for your lapping fluid on your stones?
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
It is water with HoneRite Gold. It's a little pricey but the bottle lasts a long time. It presents rust on metal. In my basement rust is an issue so thats kinda an extra precaution. People also use Windex and I have too it works also! Here is the HoneRite link amzn.to/3Pk4rVB
@tylerbloom8889Күн бұрын
@BatCaveCreations ok great. I also use honeright and find it pricy and always curious if I am wasting my money haha. Your bottle looked green and I have seen others use different stuff so was not sure. I don't want my diamond lapping plate to rust so I use the honeright.
@BatCaveCreationsКүн бұрын
@tylerbloom8889 ah yes! It only looks green cus the bottle has green writing on it alot. I keep forgetting to put a label on it. When I had diamond plates I used windex alot! Give it a shot! I live close to a Dollare General so I would just snag the cheepest one they had DG brand
