This is the kind of Grimsmo content I live for, an hour and a half deep dive on a pocket clip. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never own a Fjell, but it almost doesn't matter. Following along on the journey has been a joy in itself. Maybe it's just the gummies, but John's infectious enthusiasm and natural on-camera personality really makes me feel like I'm in the workshop with him, just hanging out, machining. It's been a journey, and I really look forward to seeing the finished product.

I got away from collecting about 3 years ago. It all started with me trying to find a knife to replace a button lock. Bull Shamwari, CRK Inkosi, Sebenza and everything in between. All though they were fantastic, they never replaced what I was looking for. So I sold everything for what I paid. I have a couple now but am a one knife guy at heart. The Fjell is it! I honestly haven’t wanted a knife as bad as I want this. These videos are great. Thank you.

First thing I do with knives with a pocket clip is to remove the clip. Nothing against them but I don’t use it and hate how the clips feel in the hand. Would be nice to offer a version without the clip which would also be easier to manufacture.

@@flosch5444 probably a great many things. 😂 Seriously, Grimsmo knives are terrific and I deeply respect the work that goes into making them. John is a great guy. I just don’t need, want, or use a pocket clip. Showing my age but clips are something of a recent fad - none of my knives in years past had them and that’s what I’m used to. Now it’s almost hard to find knives without one sometimes. Don’t need a discount for a clipless knife. Just seems odd to have a knife with so many options but removing the clip isn’t one of them.

To measure the taper : one way would be to produce a tapered gauge which doesnt even come close to bottoming out on the taper. So in essence a gauge which is longer than the tapered feature as well as such that it protrudes out a substantial amount. Even in process inspection could be used in this manner to compensate directly if the gauge doesnt stick out the necessary amount. Using a depth mic or even a depth gauge/caliper on this protruding gauge would help you assess exactly how your taper is doing. Using tangent of the taper multiplied by the corrector can be used to compensate at the machine. This change given the tangent of the taper angle multiplied by the intended axial change would have to be compensated on both sides of the taper. Previously I have worked in a shop with conical tapers and this is exactly how we measured them and compensated. Hope this helps and good luck but yes I agree changing the taper angle would change the tolerances as well. Message me if you would like more of a description of this method.

Love that machine, John! =) Please. I love when you show the features of a machine but pause the operation and dont go looking inside it while it runs. I know you already said it yourself - but I saw a coworker get his hand ripped off because he wanted to grab a tool for me. He had surpassed the locking mechanism without anyone else knowing about it.

I get the Fjell and Rask but there will never be anything close to the Norseman for me. Plus, I have large hands that need a full grip. With a little patience and watching my inbox closely, I finally got selected for a Customer Choice Norseman and ordered my perfect dream folder. I reviewed and approved the actual knife a couple of days ago and can't wait to add it to my collection! My current Norseman will continue to be my daily carry, my 2nd Norseman will be more of a collectors version and will never leave my home without a buffalo leather pocket sleeve with clip to help keep perfect for years to come. I love the Grimso way and hopefully I'll find my wayward Saga soon that I misplaced a few days ago!

Food for thought... what about an integral pocket clip? It would be probably a pain but ive seen some micro sas for slitting the tabby part where it would meet the handle. I'm not a micro machinist so maybe it would be impractical.
@Forbesy1
@Forbesy1 Ай бұрын
I think this is actually a great idea. If you're going all in on making the most ridiculous integral knife then why not do the pocket clip as well? I think the pocket clip is actually very ugly on the knife and doesn't match at all but I think your idea would fit this knife perfectly and match the idea behind it.
@95dodgev10
@95dodgev10 Ай бұрын
@Forbesy1 he ended up stating that he didn't want to but I still think it would be a cool feature. It adds to the whole integral concept plus it could make this knife kinda the Ferrari or Bently of knives with smooth seamless transitions from features. His other knives are more of the rugged yet still clean styling.

Can you move the diameter that the ears hook into so it’s always pulling the clip to the locating angles. Or increase the angle to decrease the amount of depth change from side wall clearance. EDIT I should have finished the whole video before making my suggestions. Glad you got it figured out. Any chance of there being a lefty clip option?

Damm thats neat You figured out all the advice I had on your own.... Maybe one thing: you can probably do the fineshing of the radius and the back in one go so you safe time repositioning and one line less to blend in. And a secone one. with a bigger slidding saw you can cut from above and dont have to mill out that much material, or use a custem ground crabide tool (like a saw but integral to the blank) so the tool radius is a lot smaler = less material to remove = more sabilety. How much squish do you have on the felxible parts on a theoretical zerotolerance? Love you vids, keep it up

The resonance thing on the roundover you might be able to fix by finishing the surfacing on that roundover before you rough out and finish the contour around it. Let it work out the vibration on material you are going to cut away later. Or rough out just what you need to finish that surface before you even touch the rest of the part.

Maybe some of the 'slop' in the clip would lessen if you reshape the 'ears' like you see in plastic cantilever snap-fit joints. The angular nature of the 'exit side' of these cantilevers can act like a second taper. Angular ears with a backside around 45° will grap even if they are not in the perfect position in the knife handle pocket.

I suppose you could press in balls to deform the walls to match the tolerance, match clip to handle via a gauge pin to measure spacing and grab a specific sized ball. Or just use a larger ball and press so its permanent.

What if you had the clip at the pivot location instead? You already have the hardware there with the pivot to use as a skrew to mount and clamp it down. I think it would look pretty neat too. You'll have an issue anodising with the clip as is as the side profile you'll have the handle colour interrupted by the clip. That'll impact the look from the top side i think. Otherwise looking awesome.

You could measure the frequency of handle with a scope. Then induce that same frequency back into the handle. It’s a lot for a nickel but it would counter the bad vibes.

istm, what you want to do is stop trying to figure out the tolerances and machine a feature with tension that pulls the clip into a hard fit regardless of the tolerances. In other words, the taper was the right idea, but redesign the feature to introduce tension so it's always trying to wedge itself further into the slot vs. clicking into place "just so". The axis lock would be an example of this. It doesn't matter if the crossbar wears, the spring is always just pushing it further up the shaft further wedging things into a static position. I suspect a different shape of the little dog ears would contain sufficient tension - though the galling/friction of ti-on-ti might be a problem that needs addressing. I don't know if you could have some kind of brass micro-bushing or something like that?

A good example of a taper lock is a morse taper on manual lathe tailstock. The only geometry that matters is the angle of the taper and the circularity. The diameter at the start/end doesn't matter anywhere near as much. Anyone who has used one knows you need a lot of leverage to get a tool out and doesn't take much effort to put a tool in
