How us Europeans design flags: Option A - tricolor Option B - cross Option C - cool coat of arms

@ShadowFalcon5 жыл бұрын
Technically, Option A should be the cross, since the Scandinavian Cross is older than the Tricolour by a few hundred years :P
@arx35165 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowFalcon the cross was used by basically everyone and their cousin in the middle ages, and as such it was seen as representative of the old feudal order, Tricolors however were a new alternative representative of the secular nature of modern republics. Scandinavian flags however have a distinctive feature, the cross isn't centered, it's on the left, that's how for example you can distinguish the Verona's flag from the swedish one, the veronese flag has its cross centered.

I'd never really thought about it before, but you're right. It could just be by association, although I do think it's more than that: red-white-black is a very "cold" combination of colours (and one that, moreover, doesn't seem ever to have been used very widely, except in a few Middle Eastern instances). It's noteworthy that the Nazis -- I think, very deliberately -- used the same colours in their design of the German Hakenkreuz (swastika) flag.

The articles? Apparently from Turkish. And I reckon that being allies with the Turks only 37 years after our liberation from their empire is a bit strange too... But you have to admit we gave Slavs (well, some Slavs) a lit alphabet.

The Belgian flag with the vertical colours was originaly the battle flag in 1831. The belgians and their French allies had flags with vertical colours with a bright colour in the middle and the Dutch had a flag with horizontal colours.

The modern German tricolour was the flag of the German Confederation (1816- 1866). The colours of black, red and gold were the colours of the imperial arms of the Holy Roman Empire, the "First Reich".

@Hildigis5 жыл бұрын
Your claim that all the flags of "slavonic" countires are based on russian flag is... simplification, to say the least. E.g. czech flag is based on historcal coat of arms of kingdome of bohemia - silver lion on red background - plus blue wedge added for moravia. That other people label it as "slavic tricolor" later is another matter.
@jayasuryangoral-maanyan39015 жыл бұрын
They can be based on both. A similar thing happened when the french flag was adopted and adapted abroad
@Hildigis5 жыл бұрын
@@jayasuryangoral-maanyan3901 yeah, you are correct, symbolism often serves many things at the same time. Example with the czech flag - since it was red blue white already they used it to symbolise "slavic" slovakia as the whole country was czechoslovakia after all. But still it is important to know the origin and development. Many explanations are implemented ex post to serve various political goals.
@darkodjokic44324 жыл бұрын
@@Hildigis well, it is true that blue-white-red combination is pan-slavic. however, there is one funny trivia. first serbian flag was red-white-blue (just as modern croatian) back in 1835, but both turkey and russia were unhappy with that solution, it reminded them too much on french flag that was fallen on the side. So, they recombined the colors into todays red-blue-white and imposed upon us. No one saw, or cared that it was literally russian flag upside-down!
@theodoravonwied54413 жыл бұрын
Great work! Two small corrections: 1. Luxemburg did not just copy the Dutch Flag without reason. Blue, white and red are the colours of the Luxemburgish coat of arms. 2. The German black red golden flag did not become official for the first time after World War 1, but already in 1848. It used to be the official colours of a very short lived German Empire, which never really came into effective existence.

Probably someone commented already about this, but still: The German flag, which was taken from the revolutionary flag of 1848 (a revolution movement for democracy) has concrete “reasons” for the colours. They were inspired by a poem that said that Germans had started out in the dark (black), Napoleonic occupation I guess, gone through blood (red), the fight for freedom, and finally arrived (or should arrive in the future) at a good, free and prosperous time (gold).

Actually, the white in the French tricolour was meant to symbolise the monarchy (white being predominantly a monarchist colour, and also the colour of the flag of the Kingdom of France before the Revolution), and was introduced by Lafayette. People often forget that the initial phase of the Revolution did not create a republic, but a constitutional monarchy under Louis XVI, and as such the tricolour was technically a royal flag, requiring at least some monarchist symbolism.

The Dutch didn't invent the design, the Austrians did (at least in Europe) with them having the second oldest flag (second to Denmark, not counting Albania because of complications), they simply were the first to use 3 colours with the design. Also most of the slav countries have the red and white part more because of Austria than Russia, such as Hungary, Croatia and some others, but they still saw to Russia for inspiration

Also, the Spanish flag competition was on the 18th century, not the 19th. It's also based on the flag of the kingdoms of Aragon and Naples (the king of Spain at the time, Carlos III, had been king of Naples before). The reason why they wanted to make their flag more distinguisable at sea was because at the time Spain used a white flag, and so did all their neighbours (Bourbon France, Portugal...)

.Fun fact: Norway has the same color as USA, France and The Netherlands Meltzer designed the modern flag of Norway in 1821 to replace the modified Danish and Swedish flags then in use. He chose to use a Nordic cross to reflect Norway's close ties with Sweden and Denmark, and the colours red, white and blue in order to symbolize the liberal ideals associated with more or less democratic countries, such as the Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States of America, and revolutionary France.
