First game of the tiebreaker nearly had a heart-attack when he went to cast Mystic Confluence and had it set to double bounce and draw a card (while he had no cards in his library). The cursor hovered over the cast button for a second then his opponent conceded.

Artifact mana has always been busted over anything else in Vintage formats. Even before Academy was printed, people were doing dumb stuff with Mana Vault and whatnot.

I tried looking for rulings and came up empty (also tried Flash + Theros devotion Gods). I think you would still have to pay because at that point it is just looking for the same card and doesn’t specify creature again.

Missed lethal game 1 of Match 4. If you just bounce the hamster and drew 2 cards with Confluence, any artifact you cast is lethal. And the next card was retrofitter. Maybe he saw that but wanted to keep up confluence in case he didn’t hit, but even if he doesn’t hit, he still kills M&B AND jace.

at 27:15 you could have played cobra, played tolarian, used the 1 from cobra to play candle, tapped tolarian for 2, used that 2 to untap tolarian and breeding pool, then had access to 3 mana to play the buster

Funny that, in the very last game, if LSV didn't draw a land(turn he drew academy), Sam's aether channeler would have bounced the hexdriniker. Bouncing/killing a hexdrinker on 7 can be quite a swing.

My thought in game two of the last match was lotus cobra, land, green suns for elvish reclaimer (since it's a 1/2 against w6 and the combo of cobra reclaimer still crews bust to kill jace), that way you can search out cradle, academy, or depths, especially with hoof in hand

What about Hexdrinker that LSV likes the card this much and picks it as his 4th card? What changed?

I think it's because if you get enough explosive mana, Hexdrinker will win on the spot. Even as a 2/1, it's a quick beater coming down on turn one. If he has Academy and all three of his moxen, he can make a level 7 Hexdrinker on turn 2. Level 8 if you toss in Bauble or Candelabra. And there's even more busted options if you have something like Mana Vault, Sol Ring, etc.

I think it's because it's just too mana intensive. Once LSV is up to 10 mana, he can do dumb stuff with Green Sun's Zenith, Retrofitter, hardcast a fattie, etc. that also wins on the spot. The depths combo can randomly lose to instant speed removal, but so can Mindslaver if you have to tap out for it. Dunno, though. Would have been hilarious to watch LSV make an opponent Brainfreeze themselves or pay a bunch of life to reanimating away life in round 1.

Good wreckage. Now that I watched a bunch of these vintage cube videos I do have some opinions to share regarding playability of some cards. I keep seeing this Ulvenwald Oddity passed all the time and never drafted or played. This makes sense, that card's power level is not on par with the vintage cube nor with it's fellow rival Questing beast. If there is a need to have another powerhourse 4 drop in green, Nightpack Ambusher will do a much better job at that. The flash is a pseudo-haste already, it is synergistic with counterspells and other powerful instant speed stuff in the cube, and left unchecked it's also a win condition on it's own by spawning more pups... Another thing is white and boros decks, they became way better than in older cube iterations due to recent power push from wotc, yet I cannot fathom why the omnipotent and arguably the best white card ever made Teferi's protection is not in the cube. It will provide a lot of persistence to any deck, it allows to fight against some lame and cheezy win conditions like breach/freeze or even twin stuff depending on situation. It HAS to be in the cube... Finally, occasionally I see Adanto vanguard played. I am not sold on why it is in the cube. Yes it is not terrible choice for a white deck, but that is the only place where it can go, and even there may not make the cut. It has 2 similar in spirit rivals: Seasoned hollowblade and Guardian of new benalia. Both provide an effect similar to Adanto, but also while being useful in WB reanimation and WG lands strategies via their free discard ability.

Ulvenwald Oddity is much better than Nightpack Ambusher. Teferi's Protection is an awful card in 1v1. Adanto Vanguard is a great card, and much better than hollowblade and guardian. Some cards are just for one deck.

I don't think it makes sense to get Atraxa as long as Craterhoof is in the deck. Craterhoof requires very little setup to just immediately present turbo lethal combat damage so even if Craterhoof isn't quite lethal this turn it makes more sense to just pretend that Zenith is a Craterhoof and nothing else. Worst case opponent sweeps the board and kills Retrofitter then you can just cast it as Atraxa next turn anyway.
