The Flash Video Game: Running Combat Sample

This is early game footage from the unfinished Flash video game made by Bottlerocket Entertainment in 2008. When our publisher Brash folded we were about 6 months into full production with about a year still to go on the game so please excuse the roughness of how it looks at this stage. This short video shows a brief sample of what our running combat was starting to develop as. We were shooting for a "Road Rage" kind of feel to it where you could bump and slam into your opponent until you made him wipe out. This sample is only about a weeks worth of work so we still had a long way to go on it. Enjoy!

That is what I have been saying this whole time. We tried to make him go faster but at some point he just becomes uncontrollable and it became no fun to play. Unlike Sonic, Flash was not stuck to rails. You had full freedom to run anywhere which meant being able to turn anywhere. It was more important to us that the player have fun than having Flash run at the speed of light. With that said though, we weren't finished tackling the speed issue. We still had plenty of things we were going to put in like instant 90 degree turns, slow motion, improved camera and visual FX that all would have helped him look like he was moving faster. We just never got the chance to implement that stuff.

Joseph Ogun I was one of the designers on the game. Unfortunately this exact game will never come out. Bottlerocket shut down over five years ago and all the people that were working on this title have been spread to the winds at this point. That is not to say that some Flash game won't get made. I'm still always hopeful and after the show airs and does fantastic in the ratings, I'll be hitting up my contact over at WB Interactive to see if something can be done about resurrecting this idea. I thought we had a great idea for a game and would still love to see it be made.

I always come back to these videos to scratch the flash game itch. So much better than any fan made games people are making today even with Unreal 5. Even in this early of development you can tell it would’ve been awesome. They need to make a video game of the Flash he's the fastest character in the DC Universe all the games we've been getting were all Batman games they should make one of the Flash like can you imagine upgrading your costume to be bad ass with a little bit of Injustice 2 gear system in their and make it a free roaming game like the Arkham series and the same with the combat just perform different combos and fighting styles and counters and you can purchase moves like lightning kicks or punches or upgrade your speed to make you run faster.

Reacting to attacks like that by catching blows and counteracting them is more Batman's thing in combat. Barry or Wally West are not master combatants. A better system would be using bullet time whenever you wish to dodge an attack and get out of the way while the enemy moves in slo mo.

The game wasn't dropped because of any bugs or glitches. The game stopped production because our publisher hit financial issues and unexpectedly shut down. Since they were no longer paying us to make the game we only had so much money in the bank and tried to see if we could get someone else to pick up publisher duties but we could not get any deals signed before we ran out of money too and had to close up shop.

Justin Rogers Sure, stuff like that could be fun. We wanted to include a bunch of stuff like that that players could choose to do either between missions or while missions were going on. We thought it would be funny to have one where you had to help an old lady cross the street but you couldn't just pick her up and carry her. You literally had to escort her across the street at her slow place and you would be moving stuff out of her way or doing whatever you had to to make sure she had a nice clean path.

Im curious, what was the general gameplay loop of this game gonna be? obviously a lot of running around the city and finding enemies but when it came to the missions, were there things like indoor levels or puzzles or abilities flash could use to unlock places or progress the mission, stuff like that?

I wish it was that easy. We were a long way from being finished. What you see was only 6 months of work on a 2-year schedule. Even if we were farther along no one has any of the assets anymore. All the machines had to be sold to pay off creditors. That means starting over from scratch which you would need to do anyways to have the game work on the modern systems. But that's not even the tough part. The tough part is that you can't do a Flash game without getting the license from DC. And that is not cheap. So your Kickstarter would have to give you enough money to acquire the license and still give you enough to fund a team for close to two years to make the game. Very few Kickstarter video game projects make anywhere close to the money that would be needed for that.

Make where u can do like like slow motions (like gta5) but u could do it long as possible. But this is if u go back to working on game. I hope u consider this idea

Branden Kennedy The thing is...that doesn't really make the Flash feel fast. Super Speed works like that when you slow everything else down EXCEPT for the guy moving at super speed. He still needs to move around normal speed to show that he is moving faster than everything else. If everything slowed down including your hero like they do in GTA then it just feels like a sort of heightened awareness or quicker reaction time. Similar but not the same thing. We tried the slow motion thing for the world around Flash and people didn't notice it happening because they were running past everything too quickly to process that something was different. Sure we could probably have made Flash run slower at that point so you could notice it more...but then you lose that sense of speed you were going for in the first place. When playing a racing game you want stuff flying past you to give you that sense of motion and speed. That is what makes it exciting. If everything were crawling past you, it would be pretty boring.

I absolutely hate the braindead argument that characters like Flash, Superman, Green Lantern can't possibly have a good game because they are simply "tOo oP", like no, all it takes is a talented team of game designers and developers. For the longest time, people thought that having a good Batman game was impossible, then Asylum took the world by storm. Flash in particular has such an interesting and cool superpower as well as one of the best rogues in comic history, you could come up with SO MANY insanely creative and fun boss fights, combat, traversal mechanics etc.

There is no place people can play the game or download it. The footage you watched were game play samples that I captured just before Bottlerocket had to shut down. There were not any stand alone versions of the game made yet...we weren't far enough along in production for that. Everything was running on our work computers and all of those had to be sold off to pay creditors. So what you see on the videos is all that is left of the game...unless one of the programmers managed to bring files home and still has them 6 years later.

I'd love to see the game released someday and I always have hope that we can make it happen somehow but the odds are against us. Never say never though. We did have plans for all sorts of different costumes that Flash could run around in. We were also toying around with the idea of letting players look like Max Mercury, Impulse and Jay Garrick. We were going to shove those guys (and more) into the multiplayer mode so it would have been easy enough to let players look like those guys during normal game play.

You could create a short moment of time were the flash goes to the highest speed and let everything freeze including the flash, in that moment of time you could show the player that everyone freezed down and maybe you could turn everything around the flash black and white. After that short moment you could let the flash burst into high speed while maintaining the black and white world around you and when the flash slows down let the world go back to colours and back into motion so the player would know that the time freeze stopped.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. As part of the side story we had come up with, Cadmus had kidnapped Jay Garrick and using his DNA had managed to create artificial speedsters (which we were calling Speed Demons). Their job was to try and capture the Flash because the process of creating speedsters was flawed and as the Speed Demons tapped into the speed force, it leeched their life away killing them as they ran. They thought if they captured The Flash maybe they could figure out what was wrong and perfect their process. NOW whether or not that would have stayed as the story we'll never know but that was the initial idea. Thanks for asking!

There is nothing to give. When Bottlerocket was forced to shut down all the computers were liquidated to pay off creditors. I took a bunch of video captures before that happened but that's all that is laying around. It's possible one of the programmers took some work home with them at some point, but that was over 8 years ago and I only speak to a couple of them and they don't have anything. I'm afraid that these videos are all that is left of the game

With today's hardware there would be less worry about the technology keeping up. But there is still the problem with human reaction time which was the main issue we had with his running speed and there is nothing a PC could do to help with that . You make him go too fast and people just can't respond quick enough to turns or obstructions or whatever. Crashing might be fun the first few times but then it quickly becomes frustrating and then you are not having any fun any more. FUN always comes first. So we were willing to sacrifice insane running speed to make sure people were going to enjoy that game we were making.

Jackson Kidd But when playing a speedster, players don't want the guy who is running super fast to go into slow mo mode as well...that doesn't sell the fact that he is insanely fast. He should be moving at full speed while everything else is going slower. The problem with trying to do that is if you are moving through a scene you don't even notice tings around you aren't moving because you still blow by them so quickly. Slow motion like that only really works if the scene is static and your hero is moving around in it. We tried a lot of different things but the slo mo thing just never felt right. That's not to say we had completely given up on it though. We would have tried other things for sure. At the end of the day our goal was to make Flash look like he was moving fast and for controlling him to be fun.

Can you please tell if the graphics were going to be cell shading or not and if the flash suit would be detailed and would have another flash suits?

We were creating a kind of cell shading technique that was starting to look a little edgier than normal cell shading. The lines were bit more jaggy and the colors were a bit richer. We were calling it our Graphic Novel shader. The artists were still working on the line work but it was coming along nicely. The Flash suit would have been more detailed before the final game shipped. Graphics are always getting tweaked through out most of the development process and we still had along way to go. And yes we had been planning on other costumes. No finalized plans had been made at that point but we knew we wanted to have some.

Julio JJ Gamer I have no idea what DC might plan to do at this point. With the show doing so well it would be smart to capitalize on it. But games take time to make. We were slotted for about a 2 year dev cycle. So if anyone were to start working on a game now it would not be out until Season 3 of the show. Would that be too long to wait? Will the show still be doing well by that point? I'd hope so but you never know. As for would I like to make this game....hell yes I would! I'd love to still get the chance to make it someday. It was my favorite game that I got to work on and I was extremely disappointed it never saw the light of day. We had some really cool ideas for it and I think people would have had a ton of fun playing it. Maybe someday...

Which incarnation of the Flash was planned to be used?

At the time we were making the game (over 8 years ago now) Wally West was still the Flash as Barry had not made his way back into the DCU. But as things turned out, Barry would have been back before the game would have been released so it's quite possible that DC might have expected us to change so we would have match continuity.

The enemy speedsters were part of a side story we had planned for the game. They were Cadmus soldiers who had been enhanced through a serum created from the blood of Jay Garrick. But the serum was unstable causing the soldiers to burn out so they were on the hunt to capture Flash to see if they could create a better serum from his blood. Any time the player raced through the city there was a chance these guys could show up to cause him problems.

I'm glad you asked. Part of the side story line we were going to do was that Cadmus wanted to create their own speedsters. So they kidnapped Jay Garrick and had used samples of his blood to genetically enhance their own soldiers. Unfortunately the process ended up being fatal as it would burn out their systems. So they decided to also go after Flash to try to capture him as well to see if maybe his blood would be different. From time to time they were just going to show up to screw with the player which would have ultimately slowed him down from getting to his objectives.

Fayps Smit Sorry, there is no place to download it. We never got to a point where we had any stand alone demos for the game. The videos you see are captures that I took running it on my work computer at the time. I would love to be able to share more of the game but these videos are all that is left of it.

You can try hitting up Ames Kirshen. He is who we worked with on the Brash side of things when making the Flash game and he has since moved over to work with DC on their games. He would probably be the best person to try to contact.

No, the game never came out. We stopped production of it back in 2008 when our publisher unexpectedly folded. We tried to find someone else to help with the publishing of the game but could not close any deals before we ran out of money and had to shut down too.

I honestly would love to but since it's been 8 years since Bottlerocket was around pretty much everyone has scattered to the winds and i don't think it would be possible to pull people back together for it at this point. I never say never though.

With all the hype of the flashed this year? You'd be able to pull it off; you have a big enough fan base -- People love the flash, 2017 is going to be a big year for the character due to things like wally coming back for young justice season 3 and barry allens CW show and appearance within the dc movie universe. it's too slow to be The Flash

There is a story/game play reason for that here. The guys Flash is fighting are Cadmus Soldiers who have been equipped with a scientific device that allowed them to tap into the Speed Force. This speeds them up and slows the Flash down since they are all using the same energy source and allows them to fight on equal footing. In Gameplay terms if Flash was ever racing off towards an emergency that was extremely time sensitive and these guys showed up, he would be forced to take care of them before he could access his fastest speed again. Michael Ogunlade We had just done some voice work using our own employees for the time being. So we had some voice stuff for Flash, a few Police Band radio calls, and some assorted grunts and groans for fights. Nothing had officially been done yet. We did have strong interest in getting Ryan Reynolds to do the voice of Flash but no telling if DC would have gone for it or if he would have even been up for it had it been offered to him. But that was about as a far as we had gone in thoughts about it voice casting.
