Japan is dealing with rising cases of a disease caused by a rare “flesh-eating bacteria” that can kill people within 48 hours. Health authorities have reported over 1,000 cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) as of early June, higher than the record 941 cases reported for all of 2023. At the current rate of infection, experts fear the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year. For more on the disease, Alix Steel and Paul Sweeney speak to Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

this is NOT a new bacteria. My best friend died from it 4 years ago (we are in romania, and easter european country) but its EXTREMElY rare to get it. (She got it from a really small scratch in a tree. It looked insignificant like any other scratch but then some spots started to appear on the hand. That tree had the bacteria somehow. She died in a few days) so she was really unlucky and it was a huge tragedy...really it would be better be struck by lightning. so im shocked that its all of the sudden so common in japan out of all places... it is verry rare usually. She could have been indeed trated from it if she found out earlier she had but unfortunately doctors found out too late as nobody suspects you to have such rare bacterio from the start. But even if she survived she would have had her arm amputated where she had the scratch. Not the best but i guess its better than dying.

Guys, it’s strep throat. That’s the bacteria. It’s literally strep with a mutation. Stay clean, stay healthy.

@@JIMMYZRivz It’s not new. It was in the news in UK 4 years ago, it’s because Japan is so clean any uptick of anything is considered a BIG increase. It’s a country who now also have big increase in tourism from abroad and Japan don’t want to create backlash also here..

Dude this bacteria is not as rare as the host is making it out to be. It's there on 20-30% of people on and off ... it's just that most people do not turn out to be flesh eating
