Honestly, flinching is a pretty natural thing. Often it's more of a reflexive response than a response brought on by fear. For whatever reason we've associated flinching as a cowardly response, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're scared. It's not a smart gamble to stand there and do absolutely nothing so you can appear tough. What if the guy is ACTUALLY going to punch you in the face? Whether I'm afraid of you or not, if you act like you're going to punch me in the face, I'm not just standing there waiting for you connect lol.

U aren’t making the decision to flinch or to not flinch and i think that’s the point. Flinching is purely involuntary so i would say flinching represents ur state of mind. If ur constantly on edge and anxious u will probably flinch. If u are relaxed I don’t think u will flinch. It’s not cowardly to flinch but it shows that ur aren’t comfortable.

I've always found it stupid that flinching has been seen as a negative reaction. Imagine people on the internet laughing at you for reacting to a professional fighter moving at you. Flinching doesn't imply fear, but it can. If you don't flinch, it could be confidence but it could be the reason why you get hurt. On the other hand, flinching can indicate good general reflexes but it could also be the result of momentary tension. Interpretation is case by case.

If someone is squared up with you and jumps at you and you don’t flinch I don’t think you should be in the ring. It’s instinct and defensive responsibility. People who can’t fight look at a flinch as a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of awareness.
