Them lakes do not give up thier secrets willingly. You either spend decades trying to find them before you find something or you get lucky once. Its amazing how crazy those ships can just *poof* dissappear. Hopefully the souls of those lost are at rest. Imagine meeting Davy Jones' Great Lakes cousin Daryl Jones'. "Will you serve lad?" "Have you seen these winters? The November Witch?! Comes out of nowhere. Do you offer dental?" "Uh..." "Then no. At least Davy Jones' goes to warm waters and tropical locations." "We have Thunder Bay." "Warm and tropical." Another banger E!!! 🤘🏾🤘🏾

In the late 90's, for a few years, I worked in a police station next to a medium sized lake (21,000 acres). I never saw a false image, but on one evening there was music blasting from the other side of the lake (1/2 mile away), which, registered at 110 decibels. We sent a unit over. At the source, the sound only registered at 89 decibels, so somehow the volume was being amplified (by the lake?). As we were only a local PD, there was nothing we could do about it, but a Sheriff's unit arrived while our unit was there and shut down the party. Given the events of that evening, it is easy to see how stretches of water can play tricks on the senses.

@@The_Dudester that's interesting! I know from my science studies in college that water amplifies sound and it travels better/faster through water than air, so that might have been what was happening!

I was aware of the story of the original Flying Dutchman ca. 17th century. My World History used to incorporate interesting tales that correspondent to the era of history we were studying. I think the Flying Dutchman story goes along with the rise of Dutch Maritime Empire. I really love the story you told of our own Flying Dutchman. It reminded me of the stories Mrs. Lemmon used to tell us.😊❤

Another well done video Elinor. Lot of the sinking's on Lake Superior have also not only been weather contributed but also some general design flaws on the ships. In the old days people had no computer simulators or ways to predict accurately how the ship would behave in very extreem conditions.

As always a great story for one who grew up in Milwaukee. Great too to have a woman in command of this site which might usually be skippered by a male. Great work!

They say there are up to 6, 000 shipwrecks in the great lakes, upto 550 in Lake Superior, with over half of them not discovered! Lake Superior has the least number of shipwrecks, because it's least traveled of the five. It's illegal to dive to some of the wrecks. Canada has a no diving to the Edmund Fitzgerald, it's regarded as a gravesite. Rightly so! Lake Superior is huge, SS Bannockburn may never be found, never know! They've found old civil war ships & submarines in past few years, off the east coast in the Atlantic Ocean! Love the great lakes series 😂 Who did the graphics for this video, that was cool😂 See ya Friday & Sunday friend 😊

@@Chevyman02 thanks so much my friend! I did the graphics for this one as usual 😁 Cheers!! It's true that the Lakes are vast and they don't give up their dead, so we might not ever find the Bannockburn!

Just a quick correction...the Edmund Fitzgerald was laid down in August of 1957, launched on June 7, 1958 with the maiden voyage on September 24 1958. Regardless, you are absolutely correct in stating that she was built from brittle steel. She was not built as early as 1947, but that fact really doesn't matter all that much because she suffered from poor quality steel that in my opinion played a major part in her breaking in half and sinking with no survivors. She wasn't even twenty years old!

The Fitzgerald was not built with steal using the Besemer process, which becomes brittle in cold temperatures due to sulfur content. I think the author was thinking of the Daniel J. Morrell.
