The Flying Fish was one of the fastest and most successful clippers ever built in America. She was launched in 1851 in East Boston, Massachusetts, and was built by Donald McKay, one of the most famous clipper ship designers. The Flying Fish was built for the California trade and was known for her ability to quickly cross the Drake Passage.
In 1852, the Flying Fish set a record by sailing from New York to San Francisco in 89 days and 8 hours. This was the fastest passage from New York to San Francisco at the time. The Flying Fish also competed in several other races with other clippers, including the Swordfish and the Great Republic.
In 1858, the Flying Fish sank off the coast of China while carrying a cargo of tea leaves. The ship was en route from Fuzhou to London when it was caught in a severe storm. The Flying Fish sank, and her crew was rescued by Chinese fishermen.
The Flying Fish was one of the most famous and successful clippers of her time. She was a symbol of speed and craftsmanship in the age of sail.
