Midnight Run is a under rated time lock movie. Tremendous performance from Charles Grodin and a script with killer lines. If you are stuck for something to do. Find it. Stick it on. Enjoy. Imagine Alexei in the Bobby D part!

14:46 I disagree that Alexei was not famous in 1988/89 when that was being made, that arch-shown at Christmas in the '90s film. I mean, I'm not going to tell Alexei about Alexei, but I can give counter-examples, like how we used to say "'Ello John, go' a noo mo'ah?" and of course "I keep tropical fish, in my underpants" in primary school, innit. Some of us knew what he was and his politics and we all used to go on about him or copy his jokes. Early on it was sort of manic and you did not know what he was going to do next, like in his excellent improved satire of Mussolini in a police station during the Young Ones, something else that we used to talk about in Primary, only I personally could not, because I had strict parents. Then the Beeb gave him his own series after that, which did not get the ratings, but they certainly got them from me, who loved his surreal rants to camera in a shiny suit that didn't fit him shot in a children's playground while he talked about modern Britain. Then there was that time in the early 1990s in Islington where we were talking about comedians and I again mentioned Alexei Sayle as a proper left wing comedian who did not sell out to give Royal Command performances or write unfunny books about going to the moon, and my mate breaks this record out and plays "Play that funky music Jewish boy", which I have just this year sought out on youtube. So I was into Alexei before he was mainstream, would see him be a baddie in some James Bond film and absolutely wet my pants and tell everyone in the room who that was. However, paradoxically among fans like us, if he ever got as big as Ben, that would sort of ruin it and our little North London pub opinions about how stand up comics like that were really funny, but people did not get it because they were a bunch of tory mockney mortgaged tryers. To this day, I keep tropical fish, in my underpants. 41:55 the IRA and the PLO used to train together in PLO camps (in Libya, I think) in the 1980s, they have strong links.

My wife and i were watching a tribute to Barry Humphries when Sharon Osborne came on and said, "everyone has got sh×t in their closet" and i said to my wife, that's because she married an alcoholic". It doesn't seem as funny now, but at the time, both me and my wife were in fits of laughter.

It was great to hear Alexei’s experience on Britannia Hospital with Lindsay Anderson (the third in the IF… trilogy) was it as bad as Malcolm McDowell’s script slap in the face from Oh Lucky Man 😂😂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXzViZmAr6-fjs0 would love to hear more on that. People have to believe (in) their politicians again which is what I think the first part of this podcast is about re. Starting from the ground up and knocking on doors and seeing someone put some effort into engaging with their local community. I actually think that is more important than the ideological background which is what puts people off politics.

@@leejohnson3209 i'm a foreigner. to me anything which sounds like alexei sayle or jimmy nail or peter sallis or sting or whoever is a geordie or scouse or whatever, are basically the same accent. i'm a bit like dr who. on the surface i sound like tom baker and all humans imagine i'm some sort of 'white' english londoner, but i'm not even the same species. so i'm afraid i'm pretty bad at labelling extra-M25 accents. i can manage internal london ones very well. i can tell the essex borders from shepherd's bush, brixton from tottenham, i can tell ealing from kingston on thames. a proper professor higgins but once you're in norman clegg land, they're all just the geordie astronauts from monkey trousers. end to end. even the south coast. given that in spite of my birth in a cockney suburb of lewd south london, and my extreme admiration of both sid james and arthur lowe, i have always been branded evil, irrational, terrorist and an enemy of the state, since early teens, on account of my identity (and my having been schooled in among the most pretentious and politically scheming elements of society), i have ended up abandoning any true social contract with and thus any extensive cultural awareness of that nation which is known, cordially, as Blighty, and more formally as "major genocidal population full of psychos". but i see your point. he's what they call a scouser. i get it. i admit my failure. it's probably easy to construe that as some sort of londoner's bias, when in reality it's merely because i am the anti-christ. i have met less than 4 people from liverpool and newcastle between them, but i watched Bread a lot when i was a kid, and have lately become quite amused by jimmy nail in auf wiedersehen pet, so technically i ought to have figured that one out. nonetheless, in future i will be more careful about labelling different yobbish northern areas of britain according to their actual yobbish names, rather than the yobbish names of their next door neighbours or whatever. i met this great royal marine from liverpool, though. a credit to our nation. hand on my heart. the truth about liverpool is that it was overflowing with racist hatred for corbyn. the anti-racists of liverpool knew corbyn never had a chance, that it really wasn't going to come together. i'm glad the lord gave me a london accent. there is no other accent on earth which suits what i have to do in life better. other accents are all shite anyway. -- additional thought - they should do a chat with jimmy nail. alexei, jimmy and sting. my favourite accent is that of the residents of chicago, my favourite american state is indiana my favourite form of veganism is veganism
