@f.w.13184 жыл бұрын
It won’t, Boeing played with this concept years ago in simulations, the air craft would need to climb in altitude, to commit to a turn, this was the issue that plagued the Russians with their WIG air craft, if you climb to high you loose lift on the wing in the direction of the turn, if you didn’t climb high enough and commuted the turn to sharp you could cause a wing strike in the water.
@notapplicable45674 жыл бұрын
Now with the use of vtol/tilt rotor tech it maybe able to achieve such turns
@bigbossimmotal3 жыл бұрын
@@f.w.1318 Perfect explanation. They could turn, and quiet well, as long as you weren't in any great hurry to do so. Very much like the giant tanker, or Cargo ships of today, it's just a downside you learn to live with. Once back in the water, it's just a big ass boat, subject to the laws of Hydrodynamics, so you could maneuver in and out of port fairly easily, once the infrastructure was built. I personally can imagine a reintroduction of this technology using newer lighter weight materials, and more powerful engines than were available when Russia built the first Ekranoplans. We would just have to accept their downsides, like the turning radius, the God-awful amount of noise they make in flight, and the fact that they don't take well to rough seas. Skipping from South Sea island to South Sea island in one would be an absolute hoot though. :-)

I’m having a hard time imagining a fully loaded tanker or cargo ship being made more efficient by adding the sheer amount of horse power it would need to get it off the water, not to mention the added weight of wings that can support that load. Not sure how it would deal with open ocean swells or winds, hydrofoils seem like they would be better suited for those conditions and they seem to have never caught on. Also, you better hope it can fly over the Panama Canal, cause its certainly not going to fit.
@SteveJones-om6ks4 жыл бұрын
The technology doesn’t work over rough seas is the main reason. If you have sheltered inland waters that you just want to shuttle across maybe this works but it’s a pretty niche use case. To everyone that saying this thing work Yes this thing work, but there's a few limit for the ground effect vehicle -Waves/terrain was the biggest problem for ground vehicle, those can damage the plane, but waves was the most dangerous because pacific and atlantic sea waves was so high at the point that it can capsized the entire ship which make this thing literally useless in situation like that. -Salt water is also a big problem for the engines. Some of you might says then put the engines as high as possible, but it's not that easy because of the aerodynamic stability and center of mass. -Yes, Airfish could fly like this so some of you might wonder why this thing cant do the same thing airfish did. This plane could fly like airfish did, but this thing and Airfish literally have the same problem as well as the soviet ekranoplan. -aerodynamic stablizing isnt a big of a deal, but wind direction does. This thing cannot be used in places or situation when wind is raging because aircraft it self is flying low and crosswind may make this aircraft having some problem trying to keep the aircraft above the water. -the concept of the aircraft in this video also show a massive problem. The landing part. Since the aircraft is going very fast so when it landing (in video) when it hit water it would make so much drag that can literally tear wings into pieces. This problem also applies everytime anypart part of the aircraft hit water (except part that near the COM if meterial was strong enough.)
@Fernybeme3 жыл бұрын
So is this meant to be a ground effect vehicle? The ducted fans may be efficient for moving air under the wings for take off, but the amount of drag they will cause durring flight will be high. It is vary deceiving in CGI, but; if an aircraft were to dip a, lift or right wing; into the surface of water while in flight, the sudden restraint of drag would throw the aircraft into violent cartwheels, thus; destroying the aircraft. Even if the aircraft were design to land in water, they don't do it "one wing at a time". Fantasy and reality can be dangerous bedfellows if you don't keep them separated when it comes to reality.

If they can get over the salt-water corrosion issue, more power to them. I think the time is right for this tech to come back because the days of aviation will be severely limited in coming years due to the draw-down in combustion/jet tech. If you want your Ekranoplan to be even remotely viable on anything other than the smoothest of waters, it has to be absurdly large. They don't scale down well, and scaling down also removes the economy-of-scale aspect, driving up costs. Cool plane, but it's not going to "disrupt the global logistics industry".
@jeffellis11493 жыл бұрын
From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground-effect_vehicle: "The demise of the seaplane [in the context of GEVs] was a result of its inability to take off or land in rough sea conditions even while flying conditions were good". Too fast and un-manoeuvrable for rivers, won't work with big waves. Works well on big lakes as originally used in Russia. It will be interesting to see how this is solved.

Has been tried before see "Caspian Sea Monster". May be more viable now with lighter materials but the issue is water mass and surface tension, takes a lot of power to break it if you want to fly with any weight.
@rockspoon65282 жыл бұрын
Material density was not the reason that Ekranoplans died out, it was the fact that the phenomenon they rely on necessitates they stay about half a wingspan above the surface of the water. That's all well and good when the ocean's calm and there aren't obstacles, but what the fuck are you going to do when the waves themselves are half a wingspan in height? Answer: You don't even leave port. What the fuck are you going to do when a bird or fish suddenly shoots out of the water ten feet in front of you?
