@@gustaveliasson5395 The lore text of the Flying Squirrel says that a squadron of these was basically cobbled together from scrap as a way to mount a last moment defense. I really can't see anyone creating an elaborate squirrel face on the plane in that circumstance.

I’ve read the forum post from when this was first applied for the champaign, apparently the creator managed to get it to fly like that without any fancy tricks besides making it deliberately unstable through trial and error.

Its instability isnt THAT hard to do. It uses massive amounts of steamjetd for volume efficient thrust alongside thrust vectoring to make it "go nuts". The PID is Fucked up using low integral numbers which cause it to basically sinewave in that axis. Very simple stuff. Whats most impressive to me is the fact that well, they made it LOOK LIKE A SQUIRREL! Dwg builders are crazy

i made air to air missiles to counter flying squirrels. I used small missiles with twelve components, and the missiles had three fin modules in the back, and two in the front, and still only managed a hit rate of maybe 1 hit per 100 missiles if I got lucky. one thing i did find out, is that frag warheads with a fragmentation cone of 60 degrees works really good if you can make a missile that gets close enough and is maneuverable enough to keep itself pointed at the target. you deal a lot less damage than a direct hit on average, but it's enough to make the missiles effective enough to be viable when you fire a lot of them. I made a plane with 48 of those missiles, and it's capable of taking out the flying squirrels with a approximate mat cost per squirrel destroyed of just over 1k on average. that might sound like a lot, but considering the fact that it's something that can be slapped onto a plane in minutes, i consider it to be a worthwhile investment for aircraft. it's not as effective when launched from ships due to the extra distance in getting up to altitude, meaning you loose a significant portion of effective range, and the loss of a module for a cluster ejector means it's less effective if you use a cluster missile to extend the range.

The flying squirrel is why I have a timed fuse Flak gattling gun on every early game craft I make. Lasers are a bit pricey fuel wise early game but a fast shell timed Flak will mess these little buggers up. I think Flak was originally made specifically to counter Flying Squirrels.

Historically flak was made to counter planes in general. FlAK itself is acronym for "Flug-Abwehr-Kannone", which is german for anti-air cannon.

Could just be me but I have issues taking on the Piraiba. The DWG seems to always have one when I play the campaign and I'm struggling trying to find a way to defend against its APS. I've found that APHE and similar shells are good for taking out the APS, but it'll usually always get a salvo off.

The Piraiba is a surprisingly nasty thing, yes. I find swarming it with small planes works well if you don't have anything that can handle it toe-to-toe.

Honestly would love to see a comparison between old and new Squirrel. The new seems better "armoured", but slower... No idea how the firepower matches up tho.

Hmm, didn't read about this, wonder if my squirrel killer missile design still works. Proabably will need more hits since they don't seem quite as volatile. I bet high velocity rounds are still pretty good so my CIWS's can probably stay the same. It does look like they'll be more resistant to smaller flak.

Easy way to destroy the flying squirrel would have a 2m small missile, 1 HE segment and apn guidance with gain set to 0.3-0.5

Not sure how, but its worth noting theire missiles ignored my chaff/flare that shot up in the air, 8x small sticky flare x2, radar simx2. They didnt event pretend to take the bait

Signal processors, and your vehicle's radar signature might just be a lot larger than that of your flares.

@@BorderWise12 I see, small flares have typicaly always worked in diverting incoming just a little, But i have no eperiance with signal processors. I might have to dismantle the squirral again, I might have missed them the first time. I have a rule that im only allowed to spawn and examine enemy craft after i have encountered and destoryed one, as a result iv only just been able to spawn a squirral as of two days ago.
