Hantengu has one of my favorite blood demon arts ever. Splitting himself into different emotions each with their own designs and powers is such a cool idea. It also makes him a really dangerous opponent
@J-manli Жыл бұрын
And it plays into his selfish self-preservation by showing how he's willing to throw anyone, including aspects of himself, under the bus to survive. Iirc, he and the Jar upper moon are the first demons to not have a sad backstory tied to their origins.

@solidskullz5736 Жыл бұрын
@@J-manli yeah they have backstories according to the official fan book, they kind of just show that they were fucked up as humans too. When Gyokko was a kid he killed another kid and stuff his body into a pot. When the parents found out they stabbed him with a fishing spear and left to die, where Muzan found him. Hantengu was always anxious even as a human. He always thought he was the victim and made others look bad so that he appeared innocent. He changed his identity so many times that he could no longer remember who he once was. He also started a family but would later he was accused of something and killed his wife and kids, something that would become a process as he kept doing it over and over again

It occurs to me now that, watching this and hearing "Tengu are decievers who offer power and zen, but corrupt you"... and then looking at Warhammer 40k's Tzeentch greater daemons who tend to be birdlike, carry sorcerer staffs, and are minions of a God who decieves people with promises of knowledge and power.... That Tzeentch daemons are basically Tengu. Maybe not coincidentally, if Tzeentch's worship showed up on Terra during that period as the appearance of Tengu.

Don’t forget Hantengu also represents the mitama Aizetsu - Which could be the nigi-mitama in a more depressive form Urogi - Saki mitama, joy Sekido - Ara mitama, violence Karaku - Nigi-mitama, calmness Zohakuten - Kushi mitama, which is wisdom. Has powers over the harvest (wood dragons) and is said to bring blessings and cause transformations (which could be his ability to use the powers of the others, that and his form resembles a deity which could be considered a blessing and is most definitely a transformation).

Idea for a future video: In the Japanese trading card game yugioh several archetypes (scareclaw, tearlaments, Kashtira and the newest Manadium) have been released, that are part of one big story and include Buddhist and, I think, Hindu themes each. There might still come out more archetypes though.

It's interesting to think that where the west's monsters are mostly inhumane creatures born through unnatural means, all yokai of the east are creators born from a morphed human form, especially when it comes to the big three most well-known: Tengu, Oni, Kitsune. (Which all seem to have a very specific starting ground for their creation, Oni being militaristic enemies, Tengu being religious opposition, and Kitsune being romantic opposition.) Getting to see these videos break down the origins of the types of Yokai will be useful for the story I'm working on which takes huge inspiration from both eastern and western views and ideas on monsters and deities.

The fear form with the lump on his head could be referencing an old Tengu story as well. The story says a man with a lump on his head overheard Tengu singing & dancing so he went to join them. They all had fun together & liked the man's dancing so much they took his lump, presumably to give it back the next day. This man informed others of what happened & a different man with a similar lump sought out the Tengu. The new man found them & either because they didn't like his dancing as much or just because they not only didn't take his lump but gave him the previous man's lump as well Edit: Spelling

I just had an idea for another series. You talk so much about japanese historical figures like Oda Nobunaga or Hatori Hanzo in your videos. You should do videos talking specifically about those historical figures, their stories, and pop culture references to them. Take Benkei for example. You could go more in depth about his story and talk about how he was the inspiration for characters like Azan from Berserk or Whitebeard from One Piece.

Love the video! But it made me think about something; Why would the greatest of folk heros be taught by Tengu? If Tengu are/were seen as blasphemers and users of earthly power, why would people have high opinions of characters who train under them? Then I realized something; the west, specifically America, has some historical heros who became so famous that their story became folklore. Robert Johnson, who is said to have stood at a literal and figurative crossroads, and then sold his soul to the devil in return for unnatural, even divine skill in his craft; music. It makes me wonder how many other cultures have specific folk heros like this? I don’t doubt that there are a ton; “the hero who uses the power of evil for good after giving up eternal happiness” isn’t exactly a neo-concept. But it just makes me want to figure out how many of these stories there are, and if they are connected, or if we as humans just tend to the same story structure.

Don´t know if this could be a topic for a future video. But you have in the past talked about the difference between Japan and the western world. Could something like the history of eating utensils be a good topic for a future video? It is well know that in the west we use knives, forks and spoons while they seem to be using mainly chopsticks in Japan. Is there a historic origin as to why the west ended up using cutlery while the east ended up using chopsticks instead? Same maybe with the different kinds of foods.
