That was great footage of the Pine Martens chasing the Snowshoe Hares 🐇 Your snowpocolypse looks worse than ours in Anchorage. The entire driveway is a skating rink so it is crazy dangerous just to throw out the trash. Your stew looks amazing 👍 Looking forward to that woodshed build

Hi Ed, I liked this video because, you showed a little bit more about yourself, not always outside working or traveling. Showing your cooking skills and being somewhat domestic, shows another side to you. Although you did some work outside. Do you ever split Birch wood or just Spruce? Showing the martin chasing the rabbit was very cool. Thanks for sharing.

John, there is very little birch wood here. Most is very, very old growth and I can’t bring myself to doom them to my woodstove. I’ll burn spruce instead.

17.12 :-) The ski video: Off course you know the many diferend ski- types! The cross-country skis that you testet in on of the wintervideos are perfect when you have "loipen" that are the "snow streets" made by many when they walk on them. But you need special shoes to use them in a non harmfull way. Also youn eed special ski if youre body weight is higher then 95 KG. My father was a high montain ski men- high mountain skiing is one of the hardest ski types. They climbed 3000- 3800 meter mountains in the alpines in the 40th and 50th. First you "walk on the ski on to the top of a mountain-" with a special ski binding for the boots"- they create a diferend angle inclination- and you put ski skins on them (Salomon Pomoca FelleSalomon) with them under the skin you can climbe the highest mountains! And dont run backwards. I did this tour once in my live with the school- in Austria-. 500 meter mountain starting by 1500 meter where the trainstation was and ca.5 kilometer snow way. We had old school felle under the ski but the new generations are out of syntetic. This kind of ski you need for your home. They must be wider- then the ski that you have- the proffs say between 10-12 cm As wider the ski as more weight as deeper the snow can be. You are not on a ski race course of course.The lenghst must be the same then your lenghs is.Of course your need the special show so IF you fall or hit something under the snow that your ski is breaking out of the "shoe system" and you dont breake your bones. With this ski you could walk many miles and you can climbe mountains! My friends in sibira have traditionell wood ski for deep snow for hunting and fishing on the lakes. They cost not much they are light weight...Frank

buy gras ski! Its diferend :-) We trained that one summer. on a gras mountain. I think you need that kind of ski that you use for walking not for sport. Stepp by stepp like the sibirian do it. Its not about fast but secure. I love the long and width ski I am also 195 centimeter with 120 kilo. The smal once make me insecure to shaky. Try the real deep snow ski walker. The once you bought are more for a "real laupe cross-country skiing trail" and you have to much small trees under the snow that is not the best autobahn.@@MountainMariner

Edmund how are you bud? Would you ever consider doing a Q&A I'm fascinated how someone could be so remote yet want to put so much online It's very dichotomous. I'm curious do you ever get lonely? What would you do in an emergency do you have a satellite phone? What prompted you to want to live so isolated? Is there anything about living in a more urban area that you miss? Is it your intention to live out your days until someone finds you in a snow banking 3 months later? Lol Do you miss companionship? Those are just a couple of things that pop into my mind. Your meal is "Eintopf" in German. (One pott) you cook one and have 3-5 days meal! The roof question: how many tonns snow load can your structure handle? As a facility manager roof loads are always a topic or stormproof roofs. In Hamburg we have strong storms that hit the harbour eara and the buildings. Some winds fall from heaven and then soak a roof into heaven even 30 ton weight of a monster roof. In that case we have to fill that flat roof with tonns of litle stones to make it more heavy and to break the soaking power of such crazy winds. In the Alpines in Germany or austria they build there homes or cabins with extrem long overhanging roofs because of the tonns of snow that fall from it and then you have 2 meter snow direct on your cabin...as more snow masses is expected as longer the roofs are. The roof angle also makes a diferend. As oblique an angle is as faster the snow will fall. Some roofs traditionel build can carry tonns of snow. Its only a question of the structure and the capacity of the roof structure. Is it so that you MUST make the snow away because of the heavy load ? Also a tipp for a better insolation: Cold bridges are well known as a theme. The logs outside transport the cold into the cabin. We decouple all structure parts that can reach into a house to reduce the transport of cold into a wall. The logs with direct contact to the cold is to protected by- simpel 3 centimeter boards around that part. 30 centimeter long is enough to reduce the pressure of the cold. I understand the transport problem by helicopter It cost much and you have to consitter all transports. We also put extra insolation from outside from under the roof. 30 centimeter is also good. Of course you normal boards The air between the wood fiber has the power to insolate. Future question2: Do you have a stand saw system to produce your own boards or will you have one? Dont forget: Some companys send you stuff with a big discount or even free. Its part of the win wind for a creator. Of course are the trees not so big but you could produce slates and bords with?15 centimeter if the tree is big enough. Birch is not the good wood for building- betten then nothing but better are firs birch dry to fast they splitt easy. Frank
@frankpohl4377 Жыл бұрын
Tipp number 2: IF the snow melts on your roof- then the insolation is not strong enough. The heat from inside presses through the insolation and makes the roof warm the snow melts. That could mean that you instale a next layer insolat from the inside...the keep the heat inside We also love a big space between the metal roof and the real roof. Air is also a good insolation- heat can blow away...snow will not melt and if the structure is strong enough the snow will offer a good insolation 2

Brother, you gotta keep the conversation brief or I can’t re-read while trying to respond to all the questions. I’m on a cell phone and can only read about 1 normal paragraph before it gets cut off. The cabin has been here since 1995 so it doing fine with snow load. I also need to keep windows open while the woodstove is burning on its lowest setting or I’d get roasted out of the cabin, so insulation isn’t a problem. More insulation would actually make it worse.

21.12: jingle bell ringel bell: the last Update Ski-styles: Touring ski is the name for the perfect ski you need. Touring on snow is a special sportart in the EU. Its walking on skis with a backpack or a slads like the proffesio. Acapulka Pulka Expedition Tour 170. Tourning ski is a long way tour ski style. Walking and you can drive down but slow if you have a mountain. If you have to climb a mountain- the shorter version is better for driving down a hill the longe version is better. I would change the ski your skis are only for the prepared snow way or a not so deep snow way. A perfect work ski is touring ski. If you must climbe hills you need the Salomon Pomoca Felle you put them under the ski.. Also importend: The ski you have have a loose binding. With that binding you can not "steer" Its better to have a strong conection between ski boots and ski via binding only trough that you have more controll over the ski. love Frank

I will look into touring skis and boots once I get better at getting around on flat ground. I’m very much a novice at cross country. I would like to get around faster than on snowshoes, through deep powder and hills. It will take some time.

My father was a snow lover and in times we had afer the divorce of my parents enough money for a 5 soul winter hollyday to Italiy- st. christina- Dolomity I had 3 wunderfull 2 week winterhollydays that time. That time 5 souls I remember cost by 10.000 US dollars and that was in the late 70th.The hotel where bed and breakfast but the ski tickets the "Super dolominty" ski ticket cost 100 us dollars ONE day but a hard core dirver could drive 24 hours 10 or 15 miles from one mountain to the next with gondolas. So you start by station 1800 meter high you take the first gondulas to 2500 meter from there to the next to 3000 meter and from there you drive 1 or 2 or 3 hours down to the start. you can use the ticket and drive in all stations between. That was luxury. We started at 7 oclock in the morning where on feed ski or boots 2 hours to the top- drove one hour down eat at a italo restaurant for 500 guests pasta cola and cofee and then 3 hours down only driving fast through all kinds of snow autobahns prepeared ways. Deep snow is a special thing. Ferrari driver Michel Schuhmacher crippeld himself by driving from the prepered way into the deep and fall on a rock under the snow. Coma. I would by a touring ski that is for walking on deep snow and not so danger if you understand the tricky underground traps. They are much better then your ski shoes or boots. They can wear much more weight and if you like you buy a plastic slide and with that you can gather wood or org. water.slow and hard work with a slide or free without a slide. A slide can carry 50-100 kg a professionell thing. That would or could save your live in case of an ER. When helicopters can com or planes or the EMP had hit the nation :-) You could put a tent into it water food and wappons of mass destruction! or bear spray. The diferend between snow boots or touring skis are 500% its another planet. The ski you bought are "terror for the movment" because they are ONLY for a plane prepared way. Dont give up to find the best ski for your needs. Its also cool to ask your fellowers on YT for informations about things you like to buy if you dont know much about the diference. Its like the diferend between a 80th Mercedes Benz 600 Limusine or an old school intercontinental strech. Another techical level. Googel tourning ski you will understand the diferencs by the pics....Frank@@MountainMariner

dont forget the boots for touringskie are not for walking. You can walk some meters but its hard its a plastic monster to strenghtn your legs they are ca.30 cm high. They have a diferend angle then the normal ski shoes. They are more for the "walking style" of touring ski. They are so long because the protect ankles when you fall to the side or fall on your face- they jump out of the ski system! I often fall but the ski system gave my shoes free so i did not brake my bones. You can manipulate the system as you like it. Not to tight and not to loose.You will find out. @@MountainMariner

There are good learning videos on YT I can send you englisch informations. Understanding t he fastness the danger the physikal power when you glide on snow. your ski system is "the racer style" the tourings ski is the slow style the walking style. I like to walk but the racer style is only good if you have a prepared loipe -"street" or runway. This kind of ski sport is national sport in many scandinavian countrys.@@MountainMariner

Another great video, Ed. I’m sure you’re happy with the snow, but dang you got blasted. It’s so beautiful that I think it’s worth all the shoveling. Easy for me to say, I just watch you do it. The bunny and pine marten adventure was really interesting. The Martens just dig a hole in the snow and disappear. About the stew: What time will the left overs be ready? Lol. I’m sure it was fabulous. Thanks again!

Pine Marten are incredible creatures. But I’d have to give the trophy to the Ermine for sheer tenacity. If there were 200 pound Ermine, we’d be in serious trouble!

Do you have two snow machines, so you have one available for your ARNB? 😊 Aha...That's what the two smokestacks are, your side hustle. You have an ARNB up there.😂❤

Yes, soon to be three snow machines. I don’t ever care to run any type of lodging business out here. I’ve hit enough to do already.

Great stuff as usual. Off the wall question - do you maintain any stock of survival type food (MRE's) in case you get down or for an extraordinary unexpected storm and snow? What is your evacuation plan in case of severe injury?

I have ridiculous amounts of survival food stored here. Over 800 pounds EACH of rice, flour and beans to START….I will be eating well into the apocalypse while others starve. Or so that’s the plan….

Good morning Ed. Had my first cup of coffee while watching. How early did you get up and start working? Do you ever get tired of working? I'd love to have a wood burning stove. Do you ever cook on top yours? Awesome video!

I wake up very early. Most of the time. Never get tired of moving around doing things. I sometimes cook stews on the woodstove. That’s about it. It always has two large pots on it with hot water.

13.12. 23: Ed, after watching all of your videos I do think that your wunderfull "Home on a top of the mountain" is a full time job 12 hours mostly every day. In summer you must prepare the winterroad- build as much as you can and in winter you fight against snow 7/24. I mean you are top fit. Not a traditionell office worker sitting on his ass... It seems to me that you have "no family obligations" thats cool- I- or me and my wife heavent them also. We have no kids and after diforse of my father and mother in the 70ths there is no conection to "the other tribe". So you are free to do what you love to do. I see some Alaskan canals- one with a big family they are in the "building and maintainance industry" they are realy allrounders- and they startet new in alaksa. Also they have a big forrest somewhere in the wilderness- only by boot they can visit that log home. There are many places in alaska where you could by some acers with much space between you and others. Some on grid other not. But with a road... I would like "to come over" and support you when I watch your hard work. You are also a "allrounder" you can do many things with your hands the electro department is your nummero uno! I am not so good in the "E-world" carpenter is my thing and the other departments of facility buidling. I ask myself "why are you working so hard for this unic home"? You could change the job and becam the master head of a big alaska ranch. A real story: I met a German Telekom electric master. His friend toke the 80.000 US Dollars from his company when the German Telekom became private. It was a Gov Company for 60 years. This men was a "hobby cowboy" he had a dream. So he toke the money ask his wife "for a year of hollyday" and bought a one way ticket to Montana. There he worked one week in a horse farm and they sold him 2 horses. His dream was "one year through the USA on a horse" After 1 week the first radio station had him on broadcast. Whereever he came to the next radio station had him in front of the micro and news papers wrote about "the carzy german on horse" When he ended his journey he sold his horse and was in a ranch hotel with a restaurant. There he met a NY laywer and he had a dialog with him. The men ask him how he is and what he did. His passion for farmlive for horses was hot. The laywer sadi to him " I bought the biggest farm in montana for a billionär. Would you like to work for us? This German was an electro master. High end adjucation. Even if this men was in the 55 he got the job. They build form him a big log home. He became the head of facility management (all technical stuff alarm systems fire systems water energy and so on) His wife was happy. Today they live in a big house in montana. Money? Never a thing. He lives his "old school cowboy dream in the USA" Ed I would like to understand the motivation for your adventure. Even Dick Proenecke had not so hard to work like you. And the cost for transport... and the snow loads all the time. PS: Gun in summer and winter: You wear sometimes revolver sometimes auotmatic (Glock? and 45?) Is it not to cold for automatic in winter? When I was "in the cold war" we had often 3 weeks in real winter on the biggest EU military training areas- where tanks attilery helicopter could fire as much they have to do. We had to sleep outside in deep snow without a tent or fire place. "Playing war" only strow under the ass at night. We had to warm our guns in the sleeping back! "we slept with hour brides" they said. Stupic talk. A warm pistol or gun is better then a cold... How about your guns? Love from Hamburg in Germany

Wow you sure make shit alot harder than it needs to be ten dollar tarp over the snow machines .and a snow blower they are pretty much free in summer and you can drag one out there no problem
@MountainMariner Жыл бұрын
The 10 dollar tarp will be shredded by the high winds. Ask me how I know… A snowblower will go down the path just fine but try getting it back up. Nothing is easy to get out here.

South central Alaska in the Talkeetna Mountain Range. I’ll do more of the interior soon. I’ve got a new snow machine to pickup on my way home. 2024 SkiDoo Summit X Expert turbo 850 with a 165” track. Should have decent snow by then to play around on it. Usual snowfall is around 13 feet.
