The Fool Says In His Heart, "There Is No God" [DOESN'T MEAN WHAT YOU THINK!]

Two Psalms begin with the words, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 14:1 and 53:1). Many Christians are convinced that these verses refer to atheists. A careful reading of the Psalms, however, shows that these passages aren't about atheism at all. David Wood does a little exegesis to uncover the real meaning.

The larger context definitely shows that there is much more going on with the types of people being referred to in those passages. It does entail a disregard of God in the minds of those types of people. A suppression of the knowledge of God. Or, a type of blindness spiritually, in which a person may be unable to see/know of, God, with their mind's eye. And sometimes in certain people, that'll be expressed as atheism.

these verses bring me comfort while also bringing conviction (I use to be that fool who would denounce the existance of God) but later on in life I had a serious *wake up call* and changed my ways through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, however I've been battling the thought of "maybe I've committed the unforgivable sin by doing so, after all look what Jesus said" but to my knowledge Jesus said Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable, along with that the Bible says *If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness* so I assume if I was really "unforgivable" like I've thought a few times, God wouldn't even give me the desire to seek repentance and ask forgiveness rather I would just live my life the way I had until I died and realized I was definitely wrong May God bless all of you on this video, and bring comfort to those who feel like they're "too far gone" (as with God *NO ONE* is a lost cause; remember if you were really unforgivable you probably wouldn't even have that fear nor seek forgiveness; because the Holy Spirit wouldn't convict you. at least thats how I've understood it) but correct me if I'm wrong
@spirals73

I've always understood the unforgivable sin to be walking away from your relationship with God. I don't think "once saved, always saved" is valid. I've watched people walk away. I feel it's pretty blasphemous to trample the Cross by turning away and saying you don't need it.

This is a great message. I hate when people create an entire doctrine around a single verse cherry picked out of context, from an overall passage they've probably never actually read or given any thought to. Unfortunately, this is far too common among modern day Christians. Some other examples are "think not that I have come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it..." People will literally quote this verse and immediately turn right around to say by fulfilling the law, He abolished it... Cognitive Dissonense Much? Or likely the most misunderstood and dangerous doctrine/verse of all, "saved by grace through faith alone." People have no clue what grace or faith means in this context, and think it's a "get out of jail free card" that means we can sin all we want, and aren't required to do any works whatsoever to receive salvation. Complete and utter nonsense.

We need someone who is guided by the Holy Spirit to teach us the Scriptures. Teaching and listening the Scriptures was an essential ministry in the 1st century church. Even in the OT also, teaching Scriptures was inevitable. But our generation has lost it. All I hear is curse breaking, prosperity, private jets, luxury cars, deliverance from sickness, revival, etc most of it for financial gain. 90% of the present day Christians don't even know the fundamentals of Scriptures. We need someone to teach us. We need to start from scratch! God bless D. Wood for his amazing ministry. There are only a few who actually talks/teaches pure undiluted Word of God. ❤🇮🇳

Yeah I have gone through a bit of a falling away from the faith. I have made some really great things happen but in truth I have become so wrapped up in what I was working on and with drama and life that I have forgotten God. I would never say that there is no God but he did seem pretty far off and was not regularly in my thoughts. For a long time I justified my anger, bitterness and my complacency, but in reality it was and it is a lack of focus on God that has led me astray. The adjustment is to spend time with God every day. Prayer and studying the scriptures will cleanse my sins and renew a right heart for God. It is that simple. Thanks for the clip and know that this really really spoke to me today and confirmed and articulated what has been on my heart over the last month or so.

From a Christian standpoint, even athiests have a God. They may say they do not, but they are putting themselves in place of God. The first commandment "Thou shalt have no other Gods before me"; if athiests have a lack of belief in a God, then it would seem that this commandment they are not breaking. But there is no commandment written that says not to have 'no belief in a God'. This is because God exists, whether you choose to believe or not, there is a God. Even though atheism didn't exist back then, doesn't exempt them from God's law. If a person chooses to reject the notion of God, They are making themselves a God. They put there own idea on what happens when you die, or how life came into existence, how the universe began etc. These are all attributable to the one true God as mentioned in the bible. They have put themselves in place of God. Also, the bible mentions that the law is written on the hearts of man. Whether you choose to follow or accept in the biblical God or not, because you are made in his image, you bare a moral code on your conscience. The Psalm verse of "The Fool says in his heart there is no God", still strongly applies to the athiest. A lack of belief in God, is a rejection of God. This is deemed wicked in Gods eyes and a violation of his commandments. Even though the psalm verse applies to All of us as David mentioned, athiesm is still a part of "All". The verse may not apply to 'just' the athiest, but it still applies non-the-less.

It's worst than that. An atheist must not only become his own God, he has to become his own Moses too. There are prickly atheists who come up with an elaborate system for how they expect people to treat them and how they think they should treat people. Ayn Rand's so called Objectivist philosophy is the most famous example of this phenomenon.

0:33 I actually thought of something similar but i have a differentiation between fool & idiot. My concept is that someone can be intelligent but not be capable of using that knowledge, say you’re a college student & you graduated from Harvard & Harvard is for smart people & you went to Harvard & therefore are smarter than anyone. This is what I like to call an intelligent fool because he’s blinded like in this example, his own ego of being a Harvard graduate. Then there’s a guy who went to trade school, he learned a craft & got a job in his craft, he specializes in that craft. He one day meets someone with another craft, perhaps a software engineer. He learns about it knowing his intelligence is limited & tries to see if it’s worth his time.

The Joseph Smith translation of Psalm 14 says, “1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no man that hath seen God. Because he showeth himself not unto us, therefore there is no God. Behold, they are corrupt; they have done abominable works, and none of them doeth good. 2 For the Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, and by his voice said unto his servant, Seek ye among the children of men, to see if there are any that do understand God. And he opened his mouth unto the Lord, and said, Behold, all these who say they are thine. 3 The Lord answered, and said, They are all gone aside, they are together become filthy, thou canst behold none of them that are doing good, no, not one. 4 All they have for their teachers are workers of iniquity, and there is no knowledge in them. They are they who eat up my people. They eat bread and call not upon the Lord. 5 They are in great fear, for God dwells in the generation of the righteous. He is the counsel of the poor, because they are ashamed of the wicked, and flee unto the Lord, for their refuge. 6 They are ashamed of the counsel of the poor because the Lord is his refuge. 7 Oh that Zion were established out of heaven, the salvation of Israel. O Lord, when wilt thou establish Zion? When the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.” That’s what I feel is happening nowadays. People say that there is no God, and so neo-Christianity is rising up, people who follow Jesus but will not worship Him, who just see it as good stories. It is not.

Yes this line is talking about atheists. It's talking about anyone who disregards God in his heart, and anyone who suppresses the truth of God in unrighteousness. So yes this is talking about atheists because this is their primary modus operandi, it is true of those who harden their hearts against the word of God, it is true of those who claim to be believers but when told the word of God (such as in regards to what they are doing wrong); they ignore it, call it evil or a lie, or disregard it saying things like "God knows my heart" or "God will forgive me".

Would you claim that scripture is limited by historical context? Surely not. While yes David was almost assuredly not calling out Atheists, it is by no means beyond God to use it for that purpose. All scripture is God breathed, and is this subject to His will, not human interpretation. I believe David was calling out those who knew the truth, or could see it clearly, and yet hardened their heart in spite of it, to justify continuing in sin. These are those who lie in their hearts, rejecting God so they can pursue the desires of their flesh. I appreciate your love of truth. It comes from God, who is just and truth itself. However, do remember that nothing is impossible with God. It is His word, not man's, so He is the one we should ask about its meaning, not the text emptily.

The two meanings are not at all mutually exclusive. If a man who knows God exists but behaves as if He didn't is a fool, the man who pretends He doesn't even exist is a fool as well. And it's written, "For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse." It is certainly foolish to not perceive, often willfully, what has been clearly perceived since the creation of the world. A similar case could be made for King David's prophecy about Christ's crucifixion in Psalm 22- that he wasn't talking about Christ- but God's Word is not restricted to the time it was written or the man through whom it was revealed. So the application of this verse to a modern man's "atheism" seems as apt, if not even moreso, as its application to a man who believes in God.

This makes a lot of sense. In this case it's more talking about Deism: the belief that God exist but doesn't act in the world or doesn't care, which is a trap anyone of any faith can fall into. Atheism is just Super Deism.

Taking notes: A fool in their heart says there is no God / soul resides in the heart area is mans higher intelligence not from here needs redemption from within before death / saying there is no God, in their heart is where secrets are kept yet wisdom is God, who is female in essence, is our mother therefore wisdom knows only a fool would say there is no such thing as God. Man tends to mislead since he's working with his own personal god, ego. Ego came into being through the mingled of soul (heart) and the instinctual spirit (gut) brought forth the illegitimate child who calls himself both father and son, sees the spirit is father and himself as creator or architect. Man would be a mere animal without soul. Soul is what separates man from all other animal kingdoms. Souls mission is to transform within before death takes its tole. Now a fool would mock and scoff this, for these words are not from his own personal god ego, they rather resonate with soul. II coming of Christ is in motion.

I don’t see the difference between an atheist and a person who chooses to live like there are no consequences for their sins. Both push God out of their minds, so yes the verse does apply to atheists. I guess you’re trying to say that when people sin, regardless of religious belief they are doing the spiritual/mental gymnastics of behaving as if there is no God. However, it is not inappropriate to use this verse in conjunction with atheists. Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

I get where he is coming from, but I disagree. For starters, a Christian may sin and rationalize that God will have mercy. That's not the same as someone who rejects that God is. The passage would primarily fit with someone who rejects the concept of judgement, and that doesn't quite describe a Christian. You can't really diffuse the there is no God part with the God will not judge. It seems better to me to consider all the possible people that can fit. And I would admit that some may say that there is God and still go on with evil, but at the heart of it is a rejection of God.

People have an amazing capacity to Rationalize their behavior. "I did this thing, I know now it may have been bad, but here's why I did it or what I was thinking" Or They simply don't consider what they did as Bad. The problem we are having is our Society, the people hearing the excuses, seem increasingly more prone to accept these Rationalizations. This is slowly and methodically eroding the Moral foundations that are Critical for any functioning Society. We seem to be in a phase in which the Act of even Calling out the Wrong or Bad actions of someone is what will be attacked. This trend, if it is not reversed very soon, will lead to the complete destruction of Western Judea/Christian Societies.

Would be interesting to hear David's views on Psalm 97, which is one of the early texts of the OT which refers to other gods. The earliest texts seem to imply that Yahweh was the god picked by the early Jews to be worshipped as their only god and that the gods of other people should not be worshipped. Eventually those other gods were forgotten.

This is a very helpful distinction, sir, and thank you. However, Christians that apply this verse to atheists aren't wrong and shouldn't be shamed for it. My thought is that since this scripture is defining a fool, that anyone who says, "there is no God" has already defined their own self. So is a Christian to be blamed for seeing the correlation to the same definition for our modern word "atheist?" Of course not. So yes, this tiny little verse, even when taken "out of context," can be applied to atheists as a standalone point of biblical truth. In summation, the Christian who applies this to an atheist isn't wrong - just incomplete, because, as you so brilliantly pointed out: ALL of us act like atheists when we sin. Well done.

We are close to being athiestic when we don't fully look at our own sins and how they effect others, let alone ourselves, then. Is how I see this; perhaps it ties in with the scriptures about people saying" Lord, Lord-'" and Jesus says something like, who are they I don't know them? Athiests, in my opinion-and I've met a few -truly hide from confronting their shortcomings with the blanket statement that they are an athiest. Yet christians can be the same as any athiest , because we can trick ourselves into no longer caring about the actual true walk of a Christian , and think noone will notice? This was an intense.... spiritual work out? video! Wow.

Honest question, what's your rebuttal to Epicurus's trilemma? Ie. In the bible it makes 2 assertions about god several times in both the old and new testament: 1: god in omnipotent(all being) 2: god is Omi benevolent(all good) However this creates a large issue because whence cometh suffering? If God if omipotent then surely he could have made a world without suffering that fulfils all his goals, it doesn't even need to make logical sense he could do anything right? So why did he create a world with suffer? There are only 3 possible answers(hence trilemma) 1: god is not capable of making and designing the human plan without allowing suffering to exist, if so then he is *incompetent* , or at least not omipotent. 2: god could make a world without suffering, but he chose not to! Thus he created a world where people would suffer even though he had the power not too! Thus god can not be omibenevolent, and thus god is infact *malevolent* 3: god doesn't exist or at the very very least the bible is categorically wrong the doesens of times it asserts these conflicting truths. It's important to note that is is a dilemma that has been known about since the very inception of Christianity and indeed some of very first Christians immediately moved to solve it by proclaiming god is both, malevolent and incompetent. That's why he's an arrogant needy jerk in the old testament, that wasn't god it was Jaldabaoth, a false god. The true god (Sophia) moved to fix her mistake of creating the idiot god of flesh, the demiurge by putting a piece of herself in marry to Sheppard humanity back to perfection. This was then promptly called gnosticism, banned by the church and anyone who attempted to cross this bridge in any meaningful way was just stoned to death(no I dunno about the last part I'm just guessing that's how they delt with institutional heresy lol). So honest question here, what's your take? How do you reconcile this? Not criticizing Christianity(I'm a pantheist my self due to this very trilemma)just genuinely searching for answers. Thanks in advanced🙏

Surely this one line is about those who deny the existence of the real-deal God (of the Bible), not the, for example, nature god of atheism (i.e., matter, time and chance explain everything)?

I think it's important for us Christians to realize that the Bible has nothing to do with you, but everything to do with God and his plan for you. So, personally, when I read Scripture, its always what God has done, will do and continue doing. Then it's for me. How his plan will be implemented in my own life, and lastly, how can I help others. I would also say, even if the context does apply to the Believer first, it has an application towards atheist. I would be as bold to say, everytime we sin, we might as well be atheist.

@Apologetics Roadshow: I came across your video by chance and didn't know who you are or what to expect. It was really quite interesting and has put these verses in context. I am an atheist so and have heard these verses addressed to us many times. Not in person as I'm from Germany where religiosity, if people even are religious, isn't much talked about. The context and conclusion you provided made sense to me. However, I don't quite agree that the psalmist doesn't talk about atheist. I'd rather say that he doesn't talk about atheists exclusively, or better put, the accusations he makes against his fellow Jews would also apply to atheists from his perspective, I suppose. What I mean is that the psalmist, and in extension many Christians today, might say that we atheists also behave wickedly and sinful; the only difference would be that we don't pretend there is a god, we operation under the assumption that there isn't one. Now, from my atheist perspective, I'd of course push back on the Jewish/Christian view a little in that I don't see "godless" behavior, i.e. any actions that are not according to Christian principles, as inherently bad. Sin is not a concept I ascribe to because it implies the existence of a god. I'm not saying that all behavior is good, of course, just that not everything that is deemed sinful from a Jewish or Christian perspective is bad in my view. But there is another, mirror aspect of this thought process when applied to actual atheists: While if we do bad things we don't expect there to be a divine judgment (because we don't believe in god(s)), we likewise do good things not out of a religious motivation but out of our own volition. We are bad without the fear of any god's punishment, and we are good without the expectation of any god's rewards, if that makes sense.

Hi dear, Thanks for your unrelenting crusade for truth in these end times. I have been greatly blessed by your efforts over the years. However let me make the following slight difference from your point of view abit. I agree that the Psalmist may not be addressing the atheists of today particularly but you haven't made a sufficiently clear difference between them and the group of people you described. This is because as I think, that rebellion and moral failures are still responsible for drifting people in the direction of atheism. God and the idea of His existence has never failed to make moral sense, neither ever failed to make intellectual sense from the beginning. I think it is sin whether personal or generational that warps or corrupts mans moral and intellectual configuration, such that they can't accept or detect God's existence, as you will notice that both psalms follow that sweeping opening statement about the fool with "they are corrupt", or "corrupt are they". So it is the corrupting effect of sin that culminates in atheism. So yes, definitely the two scriptures, Psalms 14:1 & 53:1 apply to all. The word fool in the bible is not limited to intellectual dummies, but every one who makes choices that lead to ultimate eternal destruction. Every one is capable of doing that, whether smart or dummy.
