I really appreciate your coverage of how social media has altered society for the worse. More people need to talk openly about this issue. On a day to day basis, I see so many humans being totally consumed by their smartphones without even realising in the slightest what's going on in the background. Basic human interactions with young people in my age have almost completely disappeared and got replaced by digital interactions. Quite frankly, some just seem to be a vessel. This is no exaggeration - observe for yourself in public spaces.

Some people don't seem to understand one of the things that made the "good ol' days" good was the fact that we didn't put so many flags in front of our houses and push our personal politics onto others. When someone chooses a "side" so openly the attack ads and mudslinging feel like personal insults that must be defended. Take the flags out of your lawns, the stickers off your cars, and the hats off your heads. Instead, pay attention and think logically, if your person says or does something you don't agree with don't excuse it, shine a light on it and make them address it, help them become better leaders.
@Gorio-h3uАй бұрын
A flag in the yard, which has been around in American life since time immemorial, is suddenly dividing society? Bumper stickers? I disagree.People have always had differences of opinion and chosen "a side". The difference now is most are not willing to have an honest conversation expressing opposing views in a sane manner. It has degenerated into name calling and sound bites. Political discussion has gotten to the point where school yard insults such as calling someone "weird" is being used. I think we can think the dumbing down of society through a failing education system, crappy parenting and laziness in general.

I stay away from TikTok but even YT does this. I find that it's a healthy practice to use a VPN, have at least 2 accounts and reset the algorithm every time it starts hammering a certain kind of content and I also find that it's much more controllable if I keep it off of my phone. I found new interest in Yt content in an unexpected place a couple of years ago via watching people react to the crazy stuff on TikTok, it was innocent enough at first, just viral weirdness that people were trying to figure out but after following 20 something of these people and thinking nothing of it some skeletons started to come out of the closet. I mean some seriously radical AF skeletons. Like there was this black guy telling people between videos that people should all be staring at the sun and the only reason it hurts if it hurts is because you don't have enough melanin so you need to stand and practice doing that for hours per day in order to ascend or something... Every example I can give is like this, proposing insane behaviors and tying them into the idea that we've all been lied to and strangely enough, they all depict communism as a savior and describe a need to revolt against capitalism. There are a handful of cool people that make these sorts of compilations and I still follow them, but there are legitimate radicals in the mix and they outnumber the rest by 3 to 1 and are heavily promoted by the algorithm. I like to think of the broader concept of what TikTok is really doing is it's fishing and playing a game of associating positive emotions to negative things and vice verse.

The algorithm keeps track of the videos you view the most and it fills your fyp with similar content. I think the difference occurs depending on which videos you watch the most. This might sound as if you have free will to control what you consume but that is where the trick lies. The algorithm recommends the videos in the first place. This was super informative and i've learned a lot from it. Thanks aperture.

I spend less time on them now, and the sites look cleaner, too. Application like TikTok, Instagram are designed to be a a fake reality, the bad part is that users don't see that. Anything you see interesting is something you'd want to explore, so imagine an algorithm that was trained by experts, that passed through top psychiatrist analyzing your engagement with the channel. Imagine what that algorithm can do and it's even worse with TikTok because if you read the user agreement, you'll be surprised of how much information they get from you. The constantly show items that you wanted to purchase because they have access to your search history. I mean it's really scary.

The thing is these algorithms are dumb as rocks. Searching for, clicking on, or commenting on random things will throw it into a tailspin. Any algorithm used against you can be used against it's creators in reverse. The algorithms attempt to reduce you to your set of peculiarities. But we are not our peculiarities, we are whole, complete, complex, individuals and the algorithms can only see through the tiny window you let them see.
