The Orania concern always makes me chuckle. Many South Africans have never even seen nor cared to concern themselves about what goes on there unless they are in the news for embezzlement or like what happened in the recent election when one "Oranian" voted EFF. It's a private farm with several dwellings that have turned into a village. Unfortunately, whatever is on the farm belongs to the trust and "owners" cannot sell, do not have title deeds etc. They use South African police, IDs, passports, hospitals, laws & their "currency" is mere monopoly money that only works in Orania. No one is concerned about it because it is 6hrs from JHB, 9hrs from Cape Town, in the scorching heat of the Karoo. Out of sight, out of mind.

People from outside South Africa think it is a town or a city. Orania is just a dry old private farm.

Orania seems to be bothering non South Africans, which doesn't make sense because it's the democratic government that gave them freedom for self determination as we turned away from racism and apartheid, so the government said: You have the right to live however you want as long as you respect our rule of law and subscribe to RSA constitution. This shows them that we are bigger and better than your past hatred towards us, we give you your rights and freedom. So now outsiders are pissed and annoyed with us, why?? Afrikaaners have the right to preserve their culture, they are not unaliving anyone, so foreigners what's your problem with that as us black South Africans are ok with that. Besides we have got our own spaces in the townships where Afrikaaners are not living with us, so why would we be selfish??

@lebo5281

@lifeinprogressUK It's over 30 years old, we really do not fuss over it. It was formed out of fear of Black retaliation, self-preservation and whatever irrational fear the few extreme Afrikaner conservatives there have. We just let it play out and see where it ends because it's not sustainable. Enjoy your holiday.

Being a South African myself, I've never been to Orania and I never will because there's nothing there that makes me want to travel to a farming community in a desert far from big towns and cities. There's no sea in Orania, it's not a city, and it's not even a luxurious estate, there are no elephants and lions to see there, there are no job opportunities, so I don't understand why this Orania thing is an issue with foreigners. They portray it as a vibrant city like Paris, or a utopia with plenty of fashion, entertainment, technology, wealth, and a promising future, except that Black people are not permitted to enter. It's just a small township guys, I don't think the black mayor of the municipality where Orania is based wants to live there either even if he was allowed to do so.

Life in progress, let´s clarify some myths here, your airport driver wasn´t really informed unfortunately: First, Capetown is only 15% whites, 38% black and 42 percent coloured. Secondly, the richest city is Joburg NOT Capet Town in SA. Third, there are more black millionaires than white, however also more poorer black than whites (sheer numbers of Africans make it more possible as well). Fourth, whites make only 7% of SA. The controversial Orania consists of 2500 people. It is located on the half desert, nearly unpopulated area of Northern Cape. Yes, it´s really disgusting and we all hope it will come to an end, but it´s not the biggie ppl like (other priorities are more pressing as well, though we understand the symbolic). Crime in Capetown is as much as in Joburg, esp Capeflats and elsewhere. Joburg is the cultural and economic centre of SA and Southern Africa, in fact of the entire continent in terms of GDP. In fact the province of Cape Town (Western Cape) is not even 2nd on economic contribution of SA (1st Joburg/Gauteng, 2nd Durban/KZN, 3rd Cape Town/Western Cape). it´s always a shame that so few people know these facts you can just Google. Nevertheless we love all parts of the country, but facts be facts. Enjoy your stay and make sure you consult with knowledgeble locals who are born and bred in Joburg (there are many domestic and foreign work migrants in Joburg who have no clue whatsoever, are just for the paper). Imagine I am in London and ask anyone about the history and current situation there. Enjoy.

@lifeinprogressUK These sort of titles are very damaging to the image & reputation of our country. We've been bombarded with this sort of negativity by racist whites since the beginning of KZbin. When black peoples from western countries use the same underhanded tactic to gain traction, it stings particularly harder. It may be just a game to you, but this is our country & these perceptions affect the livelihoods of millions of vulnerable people.
