I'm excited to see Dan doing these suspension deep dives and RTI scores again! I'd really like to see the Silverado ZR2 and Tundra TRD Pro up on the ramp. See if they're close to Raptor and TRX or not.

IFS will usually flex a lot more if you run the back tires up the ramp because more weight is shifted to the front end forcing the stiffer IFS to flex out more

Is the twin bar per side rear axle set up considered a modified 4 link? So with 4 bars + a pan hard bar…a 5-link or multi link rear end?

Multilink usually refers to independent suspension, whereas this has a solid axle, so I would refer to it as a 4 link with panhard rod.

In the off-road community it's a 5 link. When you hear 4 link it refers to a triangulated 4 link like prerunners and trophy trucks have.

@@Sackmatters Power Wagons squat a ton with heavy payloads too. Because PWs have soft springs for off-road ride quality just like every other off-road focused truck. Hell it's very easy to get similar payload capacities in both the PW and a Raptor.

@@therealjohnsmith4811 Have you ever put one on a lift and taken a look underneath it. The drive shaft is bigger than your thigh. All the running gear is overbuilt, It's almost comical how massive everything is. The reason the payload is light is because the truck weighs 7800 lb empty. It's not a off-road desert racer. It's an off-road basher and is extremely capable. I had a 2016 and I'm pretty sure it will out articulate the raptor, I'd be interested to see.

Dan's suspension deep drives were great when he was with Edmunds. In college I had a vehicle dynamics class and the teacher would bring in a pool car and take the wheels off to describe what was going on with the design. I was blown away by the late 2000's Honda Accord compared to the old Taurus I was driving.

@@noncog1 Means better stop after more constant and hard braking.
@noncog1
@noncog1 Жыл бұрын
@@haydenbriggs which this truck wont be doing, as its not a track vehicle, and actually still no, number of pistons also doesnt dictate thermal capacity or dissipation either. Ford knows this is a mall crawler, and even when youre running off road hard, the far looser surface means the brakes will be even less stressed, as you wont be able to brake hard. The massive vented rotors are whats key here, after that all youve got to do is increase assist from the booster. Besides, again, this truck wont be on sticky tires, it has a towering center of gravity, the suspension is pillowy by sports car standards, it wont be generating that much braking force ever. I guarantee you the engineers at ford know how much capacity the system needed, and even if they didnt it wouldve become obvious during development. Fun fact, many race cars use smaller calipers than high end sports cars, because they know what they need and dont wanna add unnecessary weight and cost, where as on street cars being bought for ego and never pushed, you get guys like op who THINK big brakes mean something when they dont. The last car i upgraded the calipers on, they were wilwood 4 pistons, but they were tiny, literally lighter than the factory single pistons the car came with, and i retained factory sized rotors as there was no reason to upgrade. Added a proportioning valve, good pads, and a set of re-71r's and out braked my clients porsche 911 by a good margin, with better pedal modulation, despite having much smaller brakes. And if id kept that car long enough to add enough power to need more thermal capacity, i wouldve don so via brake ducts, not increasing unsprung and some rotational mass with unnecessarily large brakes.
@Pawan2013
@Pawan2013 Жыл бұрын
@@haydenbriggs That is not true. For more consistent stops for extended use, you want more thermal mass, not more pistons. Brakes fade is due to heat so you want larger rotors and calipers so they have more thermal capacity. More pistons does not nessasariy equal more thermal capacity.
@haydenbriggs
@haydenbriggs Жыл бұрын
@Pawan Sandhu Four pistons over two or even 6 over two is a definite increase in surface area that will be applied to the brake pad. Of course, brake fade is due to heat mainly, but would you not agree that a 4 pot or 6pot caliper is superior in every way when it comes to also handling heat and how well it is able to brake more consistent until said heated conditions. If that weren't true then why would almost every sports car have 4, 6, 8, or even 10 piston calipers? Cause they're cool?

Ford engineers obviously know what they're doing with the suspension tune. Tuning for super slow trails is very different from tuning for jumping desert sand dunes. Of course you stilll need significant travel for wheel contact and absorbing bumps and droops, but sacrificing body and wheel control for slightly more flex will guarantee disastrous handing, particularly wheel jumping those sand dunes.
