I just received a custom set of cards for all the players of the eight teams of the NFL in 1932 to replay using APBA Football, a tabletop cards-and-dice game introduced in 1958 to let football fans replay statistically accurate games - even entire seasons. Really looking to experiencing, in some way, this critical moment in football history. I'm even taking the set to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when I hold our second two-day football gaming tournament in Canton at the end of August.

The following year, the championship game was played between the respective winners of two divisions, a format which lasted, and which continues today with the winners of the two conferences battling in the Super Bowl.

The early NFL was remarkable in that teams from small towns like tiny Portsmouth, at the bottom of Ohio, played against franchises from the nation's largest cities. The only small-town team remaining from that era is the Packers, the oldest NFL franchise (Green Bay joined in the league's second year) still remaining in its original city, under its original name.

There's a reason. The early NFL was an exhibition barnstorming league to showcase former college all-stars. College football was what people cared about until 1958. It was closer to a Harlem Globetrotters vs Washington Generals type of show. A lot of people don't get how the early NFL shaped what they see today: a show for entertainment. If you tell them the NFL rigs games for entertainment, they have a cow. Yet, if you think about it, the draft is openly rigged based on records, not random draw. The playoffs are rigged based on records, not random draw. Next year's schedule is rigged based on this year's record, not random draw. Even the camera angles for TV are rigged to make players look closer to each other than they are. If you think the NFL can't or doesn't rig games in more nefarious ways with over 100 years experience.... well.... It's not scripted and rarely are games fixed (anymore), but they are rigged to keep the scores of high-interest games and teams close. How do I know? The NFL says as much. "In a 1940 report, the Rules Committee stated bluntly: 'Each game should provide a maximum of entertainment insofar as it can be controlled by the rules and officials. The entertainment value of the game, it added, could be measured by 'the number of plays per game of a type that will be pleasing to the audience.'" operations.nfl.com/the-rules/evolution-of-the-nfl-rules/

The early pro game had to use baseball parks or college stadiums. Baseball and college football were far more popular at the time.

Just one point: Joe Carr was never Commisioner of the NFL. His title was League President. The office of NFL Commisioner wasn't created until 1941, two years after Carr's death.

Can championship games really be considered playoff games ? I always thought that the playoffs were to determine who gets to play for the championship.
@Kid-Pink_88.9 ай бұрын
That I put as a subjective question really. To me it's a game after the regular season. In this case, a forced playoff game since the NFL wanted no playoffs. The League rules 100 years ago were wild. Hell Look at the standings in the video. How does 2 6-win teams play for a Championship over a 10-win Green Bay team?
@tonecapone80219 ай бұрын
@@Kid-Pink_88. Back in those days, the NFL teams didn't just play other NFL teams in a set schedule. Quite often, the pro teams would play barnstorming or semi-pro teams, and those games would count in the NFL standings. That's why Green Bay, for example, played so many more games than the other teams. They had to figure out some sort of fair way to figure out the standings, and winning percentage was what they chose. If they just went by number of wins, then a team played more games against semi-pro and travel teams could win the NFL.

This was an nonscheduled playoff game. If you watched the video, you'd know that.
@kevinmadden16459 ай бұрын
@@tygrkhat4087 The NFL recognizes the 1933 game between the Giants and Bears as the league's first championship game. Therefore the 1932 game was basically an exhibition game. Incidentally, don't be such a pseudo expert. It is not very becoming.
@tygrkhat40879 ай бұрын
@@kevinmadden1645 Right, the 1933 game was the first official championship game. The final game in 1932 between the Spartans and Bears was not an "exhibition" game, it was a game that counted in the standings to determine the NFL Champion. In my previous post, I called the game "an nonscheduled playoff game," because the NFL didn't plan for a tie in the standings at the end of the season.
@Kid-Pink_88.9 ай бұрын
Honestly the biggest controversy is that Green Bay won 4 more games than both Chicago & Portsmouth yet ultimately finished 2nd because of the "ties don't count" rule
