As summer drew close on Friday, August 30th, I leisurely wandered through Barking Town Centre and stumbled upon an unfamiliar cemetery.
Barking Manor was once home to Barking Abbey, a convent established in 666 by Eorcenwald, the Bishop of London.
The Danes ravaged the abbeys but were later restored in 970 by King Edgar. It is believed that the renowned author Marie de France may have been abbess of the convent during the late 12th century.
