I watched every game this season and have been a die hard Mavs fan since 1996. Jamison was a perfect fit, but really wanted to start. Walker was a bad fit who always took shots at the worst times, refused to pass when he needed to and was known as the guy every Mavs fan would scream “brick” at every time he shot the ball. Both players we really believed would help us reach the finals. In reality, we knew 15 games in that Walker would hold us back. Also: we loved Van Exel and his way too far back free throws as well as Lafrentz. They were Mavs full and through. Kinda like Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson for the Mavs now.

I agree, watching them that whole season there were two thoughts in my head. One was I can’t believe Paul pierce carried the Celtics to the ecf in 2002 with walker as the second best player. 2. Mavs got to find a way to trade Antoine Walker because he’s literally the reason why they’re losing most of these games. At that point I never seen a player so mediocre in the three point line constantly jacking up threes, I believe he shot around 23 percent from that season or at least it felt like that. Jamison was very efficient when he was on the field, played better defense than walker, played less minutes and still scored more points. I believe if he just shot better from the free throw line he would’ve had a 50-40-90 season. Mavs undelivered mostly because of walker

Yea same here. I watch every game. I use to work at the AAC this season. Antoine Walker was so bad. Jameson was good but I hated losing Nick the Quick. I didn't care for Lafrentz so I didn't mind losing him. I remember how the Kings whooped our ass bad. It's like they was making everything. I think if we would've went after an athletic big instead of Walker then it would've worked out better

This made me do a little research. Antoine Walker is currently 48th all time in made 3s, but at 32.5% he has the worst percentage in the Top 50. Only 5 players have been shooting below 35% from 3 on their career among that group. Kobe (32.9%, 20th), Jason Kidd (34.9%, 12th), LeBron (34.5%, 11th) and Jamal Crawford (34.8%, 8th).

Great video. I never knew about this superteam. Maybe if they didnt trade for Walker and tried to keep Van Exel, their ceiling would have been higher than that. In the other hand, i dont think they would have won with Nelson and his fast pace system. Every year was supposed to be the year he really took a huge leap, but he never did. He wasn't bad, but was not a reliable #2 or even close to a star. Not re-signing Nash in the 2004 off-season was one of the worst decisions Cuban ever made for the Mavs. Letting go of Nellie and Finley was also unpopular among fans. However, they did make a win-win trade with the Wizards for Jamison. They got back Jerry Stackhouse and the fifth pick in Devin Harris, who would later be flipped for Jason Kidd, who started for that 2011 championship team.

At about the 1:30 mark you say this team "set them back for years". That's far from true. That offseason they traded Jamison Jerry Stackhouse and Devin Harris, and Antoine Walker for Jason Terry. So all they did was retool and were back to being a contender again almost immediately... losing Nash for nothing was the biggest mistake of this era. Also, the Mavs "losing" Raef Lafrentz in the deal for Antoine Walker was no loss. They had just given him a monster contract and they were already regretting the deal. Finding a team to take Lafrentz was seen as a steal, it certainly wasn't a huge loss. Yes, they needed a new center... but trading Lafrentz was far from a bad move.

I saw this team when I was in high school as I really liked the Mavs at the time. Was excited for the Jamison addition as I felt he was a missing piece while the Walker acquisition left me perplexed. This was the year Jamison won 6th man of the year. LaFrentz was a decent big that can score some (which extends to the 3 pt range) and block shots, they sorely missed that. They usually had Dirk or Danny Fortson (undersized for the spot then but capable) at center. Ended up being an underwhelming season along with those awful jerseys.

Mark Cuban learned as an executive big time from 2002-2004 that less is more. They actually did better in team record from 2005-2007 when they stripped the talent and allowed Dirk to thrive at his peak, with a lesser known coach from Nelson to Avery coaching the squad. For what it's worth, Cuban's intelligence and Dirk's bball ability will always be one of the greatest executive-player duos in league history, something typically unexpected from fans, but it resulted in a ring against one of the most talented teams ever in 2011.

Antoine Walker won the NBA Championship first in 2006 against his former team Mavericks. Don Nelson eliminate his former team Mavericks in 2007 1st round, while coaching the 8th seeded Warriors Antawn Jamison also become 2-Time All-Star while playing with the Wizards And lastly, Steve Nash won 2 MVP while playing in the Suns

The problem with this team is they added too many guys that needed the ball (Walker and jamison) and that resulted in one of the best pgs in the league with the ball in his hands at the time (yes. Even back in dallas) in Steve Nash making less decisions , even tho he is more than capable playing off ball. His game is compromised now and he goes from all nba to missing all star selection to Sam Casell. Then in the offseason cuban kinda blames Nash and also looks at age and health history and low balls him in the offseason. Dirk playing the 5 also wasn't a good idea, as well as not shooting as much , because again theres only so many shots to go around, was all bad. Overall it was doomed. Bad bad roster management. Antoine Walker was just so bad and such a bad fit lol. Jamison actually fit ok.

FINALLY a great comment. ITs hard to see someone writing good things this days. Fans think that you just need to put STARTS together and that works. Specially when those arent really stars but MARKETING stars. Players that need the ball and because they play on bad teams they shoot a lot without going to the bench. A.Walker was horrible, the 2 previous seasons he was a horrible 38% and 39% shooter. His stats were just a result of playing over 40 minutes and shooting 20 times a game. Horrible fit to play with DIRK because DIRK wasnt a rebounder or a real center, he was more like a SF then a CENTER.

DALLAS management was horrible. IN a couple of years they ruined NASH and DIRK prime time by adding MARKETING OLD stars who werent really good. They had NASH but were still looking to play with 2 PG at the same time. N.V.EXEL 6,1ft playing SG and T.Hardway , all volume shooters. M.Finley was also a scorer who wanted the ball all the time.

I am obsessed with the "What if" Steve Nash stayed with the Mavs. Dirk and Nash, and a good rim protector, and then surround them with 3 and D guys. I guess I gotta make it happen in 2k. :D

Yep, because he built that team and knew all their weaknesses lol. Kinda like how Jon Gruden annihilated the Raiders in the 2003 Super Bowl. Student vs Master. It's too bad the Warriors that year would go on to lose to the underwhelming Jazz in the 2nd round.

Yeah I don’t think Mavs fans care in hindsight. They ended up winning a ring, it probably humbled them. It’s not like it was a WCF or anything. Shit it happened this year with the Bucks and Grizz. Nelly never won his ring and eventually he couldn’t even get a job as a HC.
