The Panay attack should have been a warning. In many quarters, it was taken as such. However, diplomacy demanded that a Japanese "apology" (and money) had to be accepted. 7 July 1937 is the date on which World War Two began (Rather than 1 September 1939, which marked the beginning of the European war.) in the view of many historians.

Well there was another war called The Pacific War which happened before and during World War 2

The Pacific War started when Japan invaded China in The 30s and ended when World War 2 ended in 1945

Sand Pebbles. My Father was a S.A.C.O “ Weather Observer” Naval Station China. He observed no weather , and carried no weather instruments. He stood on a Bulkhead of the Panay’s Wreck. He’d helped to clean up Pearl Harbor. He wanted to see where Our War REALLY started. Pop was the first LIVING White Man to see Unit 731’s Ruins. Dad was stationed in Happy Valley with Dai Li. He dined with Madamme Chaing and met the Young Emporer. ???!!!*** Ding Hao!

The movie "The Sand Pebbles" with Steve McQueen is set a decade or so earlier, but the boat looks the same.

That was fairly obvious even at the time, but the US of that period (much like many other nations, to be fair) was hungry for war.

Somebody needed to get that smoke. Spain just so happened to be at the right place at the wrong time for an accident to get blamed and stir up sympathy from the civilian population.

My Mother worked as civilian employee of the Navy during the war. She worked in a department where Cmdr Hughes had been exiled.

Kind of reminds me of the attacks on the USS Liberty by the Israeli Air Force as well as the attack on the USS Stark by an Iraqi fighter plane.

@@Svensk7119 The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship (spy ship), USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War. (56 years ago tomorrow)

@@Kamilohbk So we are speaking of an historical event, nothing recent. Despite my very deep background in military history, I have never heard of this. Perhaps one of my books mentioned it, but not by name... I don't believe I have ever heard of Israel firing at US forces before. One of my books may have said something vague like "rough patches" in the relationship, but with no details given. Interesting. I have studied the Six Day War thoroughly. Granted, it has been a long time. But I don't think that it has been THAT long.

@csh7119 Read James Ennes book 'Assault On The Liberty' Now a retired senior naval officer Lieutenant Commander Ennes was a junior officer on the bridge of the USS Liberty at the time. 34 America seamen were killed and 171 injured. It is now thought that the reason for the attacks was to provide a smokescreen to cover the assault on the Golan Heights. It has also been suggested that it might have been done to lure the US into the war on Israel's side. There is some evidence to support this theory as it has been stated that President Johnson launched an assault from an aircraft carrier on the basis that the Liberty was under attack from Egyptian forces. The whole affair is was stated to have been one of the reasons why President Johnson decided not to run for a second term in 1968.

The Imperial Army and Navy only answered to the Emperor, at that time. The civil government had no control over their actions. In the 1930s the Army was in the habit of assassinating politicians who tried to enforce some kind of control. The attacks were wholey Army actions, because they wanted to.

Seems odd we were reading codes messages in 1937 , But had no clue about the attack on Dec 7 1941. Think on that a bit .

There's nothing to think about. We were reading diplomatic codes not military codes. We knew an attack was coming, but not where. And it was the desire of FDR for Japan to be the aggressor to justify a war of self defense with Japan.

Reminds me of the Sand Pebbles Movie for some reason. Had we jumped into the war at that time the losses of ships and lives in the Philippines may not have happened. The Baton death march may not have happened. Pearl Harbor would not have happened. The Japanese may not have joined the axis powers.(they joined on September 27, 1940). The U.S. would have a four year jump on mobilizing their military industry. Japan would have four less years to prepare for war against the U.S. Never put off till tomorrow what you can accomplish today. Proverbs 27:1 - Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

The difference between the two, other than the scale of the operation, is that no one warned the DoD before the first attack.

I very good movie based on this story staring Steve McQueen , called The Sandpebbles. The fictionalized ship is the San Pablo not the Panay.

... another incident that could have brought us into WW2 was the torpedoing of the USS Reuben James by a German U-boat on Halloween night 1941, 5 weeks before Pearl harbor ....
