As a newbie... what is the second tuning slide used for?

This absolute madman putting his ring and pinky finger below the 3rd slide. Using my middle finger is actually MUCH better for controlling the third slide, I have no independent dexterity in my ring finger. But it hurts quite a bit resting the trumpet on my ring finger from below. How do I hold this thing ughhhhh (for context I have been playing for 7 years and still cannot figure out how to hold a trumpet comfortably while having good control over the slides!)

Hi, would it matter if the 2nd tuning slide has a dent in it? Will it make a difference in sound or is it just cosmetic?

There is a lot more to say about tuning slides. For instance: how do you controle the lenght of the three slides? The valves 3, 2+3 , 1+3 you can controle with the equivalent harmonics. David Lingner both. If I have a lick that is tricky and ends on a note I need to kick out, I will pull out beforehand.
