El Coyote western TV series episode pilot starring Muriel Davis and George Brent this is the pilot episode of a suggested TV series titled El Coyote from 1957. This is episode 10 of The Forsaken Westerns, an original TV series produced by Westerns On The Web Productions. In this episode Muriel Davis (American gymnast team gold medal winner at the 1963 Pan American Games, she also competed in all artistic gymnastics events at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics) stars as the title character Jane Edwards who now takes on the identity of El Coyote. The avenger of long ago disappeared and now Jane takes on the part when the need for the old time hero presents itself again. Her father Colonel Bart Edwards is retired from the military and now runs a newspaper. This is the only known existing episode of this show. It is a shame because it looks like it could have been a great series with a young girl starring as a Zorro type character. The Forsaken Westerns series contains episodes of TV shows that were never broadcast or have not been broadcast in as many as 65 years. Almost lost forever, these rare television film treasures are now being released and uploaded for free viewing from the www.westernsontheweb.com archive collection. Watch full length western movies and TV shows full episodes on the Westerns On The Web channel and make sure to subscribe. The Forsaken Westerns is hosted by Bob Terry.

As of 12-11-2017, it appears Muriel Evelyn Davis-Grossfeld is still here with us at 77. She had a long career in U.S. Olympics. Thank you very much, Bob Terry and WotW, for these uniquely American, forgotten programs. They are often rich with the concepts, ideals, and standards that had seemed to be relatively "common sense", but have slipped from US. A house, family, society, country is only as strong as its foundation[s]. Everything tends to go the way of entropy, without enduring vigilance! Pray!

Some comments below wondered why this pilot of 1957 was not "picked-up" and made into a regular series. I think the answer is that in October 1957 the Disney series, "Zorro," featuring Guy Williams started its two-year run on ABC television in the USA. The well known plot of "Zorro" would have had to much similarities to this pilot.

I am somewhat surprised that there is only the "Pilot" episode...The way I have read about this Proposed Series from the various sources (TV/Film Magazines/Newspapers/Trade Journals) relate that this proposed series was very, VERY close to be accepted as an upcoming Network series. Usually, when this is the case, there are often a handful (2-4) episodes already "In-The-Can--as it were? And--if the episodes were not actually filmed and "In-The-Can" already...then, almost invariably, there were already Finished--finalized Scripts immediately ready to be shot with everything behind--the-scenes in Pre-Production being ready to shoot at a moments notice--if and when the Network gave the Big "OK"! Also, we may have some evidence of this (several other episodes eing already shot and in post production) by-the-way-of or involving one of the big Promo Shots of Muriel Davis (Jane)...apparently...performing a stupendous Dive over (or from) the top of Waterfall into the lake beneath...we will note that this apparently important and expensive scene does not take place in the pilot-episode...even if the location itself is utilized during one of the scenes shown in the Pilot-Episode...where "George Brent" (Jane's Father) is about to be "Dry-Gulched" by 2 side-wander "Varmits" working under orders to shoot him down. In the scene from the pilot episode...we see "Jane" from the top of the waterfall/cliff tossing her "Father" (George Brent) one of her pistols, but the audience has trouble hearing what she is telling him...partly because of the noise of the water-fall, but also because of the Spanish accent she is conveniently employing, and I might make mention that because of her youthful or feminine voice working in a higher-pitch voice than an adult or a Man...the waterfall noise also at high pitch, makes her voice a bit difficult to understand. This factor might have been mitigated by having her wear a silk mask which covered her mouth, and the result would make her voice sound much more Male and MENacing. It would make her voice sound much deeper. This is because the strands of Silk are actually very much like the thin vocal chords/cords of children and young women, and when the sounds are vocalized through the silk weave strands, the higher-pitched frequencies are sympathetically resonating the silk strands of the mask, and only the lower-deeper vocalizations are projected. This is why in the classic films of people disguising their voices they habitually utilized a silk scarf or some silk materials. The effect was to make their voices more MENacing, MEaN, and MAlE. I also think that this series--or the title/Titular Pilot Episode may/might/possibly have been shot in Color? Actually after 1957, many TV pilot Episodes were shot in color. Partly, this is because many of TV shows were shown overseas as film-serials, but it was known that Color-TV was coming...Soon! For example, the Lone Ranger was shot in color from just about the time of the start of the Korean War. So...maybe...somewhere in the Vaults...there may be a color episode? There was 2 things going against this series in late 1958-59 time frame...there was the shift to the Adult-Psychological WESTERN...Gunsmoke, Bonanza et.al...and the economic recession of late 58-59 early 60, and so many advertisers and networks were not eager to start new series. I have much more I could say about this proposed series...the girl or female heroine in westerns...was actually not something that was an anathema, a distinct and direct deviation, nor something which was utterly unacceptable as some other reviewers ardently and adamantly claim! I could also relate that the core stunt sequence of Muriel's (Jane's) stunts in...at...or around the Church are lifted, in almost their entirety, from Douglas Fairbanks Sr. in his magnificent 1920 film: "The Mark of Zorro"! I am not complaining, but I will and must marvel at the facility and facile form in which they were adapted and performed--not just by Muriel-- but by the entire stunt crew! I am almost sad that the series was not set in a more...swashbuckling, sword-wielding period...maybe in Pre-Mexican War Monterey, the Capitol of Old Spanish California? Maybe, Jane would have...Justly wielded a wildly, wondrously wicked sword against the Wicked? Maybe, her Father would have been a diplomat serving in Monterey....one who had married a Spanish Catalonian lady with family-ties to California? Catalonians were almost the exclusive Spanish immigrants to California, and this is why they never thought of themselves as Mexicans--or as one Historian put it...the Californios hated the Mexicans, but they never united long enough to declare themselves in open rebellion. They just never cooperated with the government in Mexico City--especially...most ESPECIALLY...involving TAXES!

I would suspect that the failure of this show boiled down to three letters at the end of the credits: RKO. In 1957 when the pilot was copyrighted, RKO Pictures was failing. The production facilities had been shuttered, hence Filmaster's involvement, and the studios were sold to Desilu. Domestic distribution was sold to Universal-International. What was left of the remaining assets were gradually being sold off. One film that they had in the can, "Verboten" would end up being released by Columbia two years later. RKO would not re-enter production until the 1980s.

Too bad there was only a pilot episode. The concept is interesting, and cool name too. A western tv series with a female star lead would have been refreshing for the genre (I don't remember any other aside from "Annie Oakley") . Muriel Davis had a certain charm, seemed to be a vey good rider, and could do a lot of her own stunts. Even with all the darkness in this copy of the episode, you can tell it would have been exciting acrobatic action for the time.

I have a Zorro The Masked Avenger DVD set (three disc set) with different people playing Zorro. In one episode called "Zorro' s Black Whip" Linda Sterling played the lead role as Barbara Merideth. She took on her brother's role as The Black Whip when he was killed saving her from outlaws. The story took place in Idaho in the late 1880's
