The Four Celestial Symbols are important figures in Chinese mythology. The Azure Dragon of the East symbolizes power and rebirth in spring. The Vermilion Phoenix of the South represents virtue, rebirth, and marital harmony. The White Tiger of the West personifies protection, courage, and strength. The Black Tortoise of the North is associated with wisdom, protection, and longevity.

In Japan they are Seiryu, Suzaku, Byakko and Genbu and in Korea they are Cheongnyong, Jujak, Baekho and Hyeonmu.

Not mentioned. The Vermillion Bird represents fire and summer. The White Tiger is autumn and metal. The Black Tortoise is water and winter. There's even a 5th animal of the Golden Dragon. Sometimes the Quilin instead. Representing the direction of central, the element of earth, and midseason. By western comparison to the elements, directions, and seasons; north is earth and spring, south is fire and summer (both regions r think alike), east is air and autumn, and west is water and winter (the former 2 r the same. Its only the direction)
