Very true mate. HF label have been the leading light for 8-9 years in the U.K for consistently well produced proper hip hop. Also Fliptrix toured with R.A back in the day when launching his first album so they know each other.

Lawrence H If you could indulge me for a second, I think I have a unique perspective on this. I feel like a bit of a hip hop Forest Gump. Haha I grew up in the South Bronx. I went to Kool Herc parties in the community rooms of the projects. I went to many jams in the park listening to the Cold Crush Bros, the L Brothers, Fantastic Five and Flash and the Furious Five (Union Ave stand up!) and for a period of time I lived beneath Kool DJ Red Alert. Huge fan of hip hop! When I was younger you read the liner notes that came with the albums you bought. You listened to every song on the album multiple times. As the years have gone on I still do that. It took a minute to figure out what peng, bullocks, wastemen, P’s, etc were, but to me that’s what you do when you listen to music. You investigate and try to learn more about it. I know that there are other artists in England doing there thing and even if it’s not me cup of tea (haha) I know that there’s an audience for it. It took a minute to get past the masks and accents but once I did, whoa! To me the Four Owls are like the Wu-Tang clan in that the stuff they do individually is 🔥 as well as the stuff they do together.

erikrd - well I can’t compete with that lineage Erik, but suffice to say I have been transported all over the U.S through the craft and mastery of lyrics over the years. Much like you, us back here across the pond have had to zone into multiple dialects and pick up the lingo, but it’s all part of the fun. There are an extremely talented bunch of rappers from over here that are keeping the boom bap era of HH alive which is great to see. Plus the merch they are selling is fantastic as well man. I can’t speak for the whole accent thing, but it clearly gets in the way for most I think. It takes people to look past that I guess to notice that these boys can spit. There are too many to mention but I could name probably 20 that consistently put out well produced, well constructed and generally just great music. I feel like the current crop from the US, considering its size can only really produce the same numbers. Anyway, glad you are enjoying what the UK is producing, maybe I’ll put together a dictionary of terms so that more of our American cousins can enjoy! Peace

Ha ha, I’ll do my best. I won’t include any High Focus artists as I’m assuming you’ve looked into them already. Won’t be strictly boom bap but a nice mix of what we have offered up over the years. I’d say start with Jehst and also other artists on his YNR label, then maybe check out Task Force, Mouse outfit, Klashnekoff, Rodney P, Plan B, Skinnyman, Trellion and Sniff, Lee Scott and others on label Blah Records, Stig of the dump, Cappo, Loyle Carner, Akala, Lowkey, Dave, Roots Manuva. I think that will keep you busy way beyond lockdown brother, but if you need some more names I have plenty more. That’s just a mix of different styles and eras to whet your tastebuds. I hope you enjoy my friend.
