My buddy and I did that in the late 90’s in his CJ7. Camped up top. I did it a few years later in my 1965 ford 2wd. Beautiful place.

It must have been january 1981 we made a Sunday morning run to the Peaks , hauled a truck bed full of snow back to Bell rd for a snowball battle with the neighbors. Where did the time go?😂

Four Peaks has been off my list for some time now. I used to drive it on a regular basis starting back in the 60s when it was a real 4x4 road or you wouldn't make it. We'd sometimes camp up near Lone Pine Saddle and you could see the fountain down at Fountain Hills when it ran 24/7 and was illuminated at night and then down the El Oso road on the backside to Roosevelt Lake. We'd use our geological survey maps and check out the various springs on the mountain. We'd also follow the ridges heading south from the road that would eventually drop us into Butcher Jones Beach at Saguaro Lake. The road has been greatly improved since then to where you could take your land yacht up it after church on Sunday. The proliferation of everybody and their dog with an ATV, UTV, dirt bike or shiny new 4x4 using the road as their personal race track and party area has totally soured it for me. Same holds for the Sugarloaf Mountain road on the opposite side of the Beeline highway where it leads to Sycamore Creek.........totally ruined.

I definitely get that. A lot of things really change over time. Some for the better, some for the worse. Alot of the woods and places that I played in when I was a kid, aren't even there anymore. Progress can definitely be heartbreaking

This was literally the first trail I ever ran back in 2007. I had just bought a Arizona trails guide book and Jeep Patriot. 17 years and ten jeeps later….. let’s just say it’s been quite a ride! Love four peaks. It’s beautiful and has some good hiking trails off it.

My parents had a mining camp half a mile from Sycamore Creek at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain, the opposite of going to Four Peaks. I lived there 4 years in the late 1980s. I traveled Four Peaks Road many times. Another prospector lived south of Mesquite Wash up Four Peaks Road. Between the southern peak 4 and peak 3 is a famous Amaythist mine. In 2006, I found yucca fruits 5" to 11" long, like eggplants in the shape of yams. Usually, these yucca fruits don't get larger than 4" long.

@BuckinLifeoffroad yucca roots can be baked like a potato and eaten. Recipes are online. The yucca fruits are usually good when small, cut up, and mixed with corn meal with a little flour, cooked like fried okra. The white flower petals are good in soups or stews. The sharp leaves have strong fibers running their lengths. When removed, they can make a twine or rope, and after they dry, it becomes hard, Indians used it for securing stone arrowheads to the shaft.

There was a massive fire from what started down on BUSH hyw June 2020 Kept us off the trails during the Vid nightmare. It burned thousands of wildland. ..... The Bush Fire was a human-caused[1] wildfire that started in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. It burned 193,455 acres (78,288 ha). The fire started on June 13, 2020 near the intersection of Bush Highway and SR 87 and was fully contained on July 6, 2020[2]

That area was burned due to a car fire. The person stopped on the highway heading south on the 87 just south of the Bush Highway and the fire spread to the brush along the highway.

Apache lake is worth a visit. It seems they have opened a bit more of Apache trail over the past 2 years. Last time we went that way, it was closed at the lake turn off.

I got to do that trail before the Bush fire that started on June 13, 2020 near the intersection of Bush Highway and SR87. It burnt up to 193,455 acres. I heard a Prius broke down on the side of the highway and that's how it started, I don't know if that's true though. It's a beautiful area. I am glad you finally got to drive this awesome trail. You will have to do the Apache Trail when it opens back up. Back in the 60's we used to drive across the dam before the bridge. That was so much fun as a kid. I think it would be a little scary to me now.

So the GPS function works good with on X? Do you need to subscribe to get it to work right? If you subscribe, do the advertising quit?

It does. Just make sure you download the offline maps before you head out. That way when you lose service, it still works. I've never seen any advertising on OnX... I couldn't tell you. I use both OnX and trails offroad. Both have their strong and weak points but I love them both

I moved here 3 summers ago, thinking AZ is as what others said, a barn desert with nothing but 2 mid size cities and nothing in between, oh boy was I wrong to the 100th degree. I started driving my Subaru all over this beautiful state and it has never stopped to deliver its beauty and tranquil in a shock and awe manner. I am not even a bit missing California as AZ delivers even more for less cost, and I couldn't be happier that I made the move. Anyways, do you have a map route of this route that you did in the video?

Was lucky enough to do this in a Nissan sentra in 2016, took 2 hours and had to use Low gear a few times because it was sprinkling and later snowed when we go to the saddle

Yeah I attempted this and then aborted in an accord, hoping to find a 4Runner for this winters adventures, the problem with driving accords or civics on these types of roads is that the definition of “primitive road” can vary greatly and sometimes it goes from not too bad to oh shiiii in a couple seconds, this road might not even be considered primitive idk just depends on if they got out there with a sign I guess lol

Yeah, the old one was completely destroyed. I was only able to save the battery, SD card, and the ND filter on the camera that completely snapped off.

Your advice is pretty bad regarding who should take what vehicle on this road. No cars or low clearance vehicles should be on this road. You even got bothered by a trail of people in front-end of you. Who were all in capable vehicles.. Thanks for sharing the video at the least. Enjoy easy dirt roads in your $60k bronco.

@stefanb18 Not sure where you get that I said it's ok to bring low clearance vehicles out there, as I specifically say not too..... 4:17 - 5:20 Especially sports cars. You can easily run this road however, in suitable passenger vehicles like crossovers such as a RAV4, Bronco Sport, Jeep Renegade, or Subaru Outback....just to name a few. You do not need a 4wd vehicle for the route at all. It's a glorified dirt road. I am also not sure how you feel I was bothered by anybody on the trail. What I did say is that I was behind a group of that is running slower than I was planning (which was fine) and that's just a regular statement, not acting bothered. Thank you, I enjoy many trails, easy and hard, in my $55,000 Bronco. They are amazing! I feel myself blessed to be able to afford something nice in my life for once. I've had old and used cars most of my life and I worked hard for the Bronco, so I appreciate it. Seriously though, what does it matter what my Bronco even costs? In today's standards what I paid for my Bronco is actually pretty inexpensive. Should I only run trails in something old and cheap?
