*LYRICS - The Fox* ------------ The fox went out on a chilly night An' he prayed for the moon to bring him light For he had many a-mile to go that night Before he reached the town-o, town-o, town-o He had many a-mile to go that night Before he reached the town-o He ran till he came to the farmer's pen And the ducks and the geese were kept therein He said a couple-a you are gonna grease my chin Before I leave this town-o, town-o, town-o Couple-a you are gonna grease my chin Before I leave this town-o He grabbed the gray goose by the neck And he threw a duck across his back He didn't mind the quack, quack And the legs all dangling down-o, down-o, down-o He didn't mind the quack, the quack And the legs all dangling down-o Well the old gray woman jumped outta bed An' outta the window she popped her head Cryin' Johnny, John the gray goose is gone The fox is on the town-o, town-o, town-o Johnny, John the gray goose is gone And the fox is on the town-o He ran till he came to his nice little bed An' there were his little ones, eight, nine, ten Saying Daddy, Daddy better go back again It must be a mighty fine town-o, town-o, town-o Daddy, Daddy go back again For it must be mighty fine town-o Well the fox and his wife without any strife They cut up the goose with a fork and a knife And they ain't never had such a supper in their life And the little one chewed on the bones-o, bones-o, bones-o They never had such a supper in their life And the little one chewed on the bones

I first heard this delightful song when I was a boy and heard Burl Ives sing it. I haven’t heard it for many a year until watching a rerun of the HBO series ‘Deadwood’ they played it during the closing credits. What fun to hear it once more, This version is wonderful.

Well, last week I thought I'd listen to a song called "California" and I've been listening to Bluegrass and Country ever since. Lost count of how many times I've listened to The Fox. How can you not fall for these girls? Katie's smile during her fiddle solo just melts my heart. You are all true artists.

What do families do during covid-19novel corona virus well they're bored so they get to singing like the Petersen's singing.. They sound good and burn a CD and leave it with a record Corp like rhino or epic or rca or chrysalis and welp

This is originally done by Nickel Creek for anyone interested. Pretty good cover though.

It's a lot older than nickel creek, probably most famously sung by Pete Seeger

This is old English folk song from probably the 15th century. The lyrics may have changed a little bit over 500 years but the original song was from back then. It came over with the mountain folks that settled Appalachia and the Ozarks. I remember this being done at pickin jams in Kentucky from my childhood..
