So hazing is trauma bonding by narcissistic entitled bullies so you don't go against the crowd when they harm and do illegal things. How disgusting. And the fact the father stood by the frat over his own child's cruel demise.

@yeew gow So, in your mind, just because people are against the idea of kids being pressured into dangerous activities, they are (checks notes), depressed and likely to "wind up offing themselves"? I'm having trouble following that particular brand of logic, but okay...

I graduated from that college and I have never experienced anything related to ghosts/spirits.There are a few articles online written by Kenyon's students about some places being haunted on campus but it is not related to buzzfeed's video. Like some students died when their dorm caught fire so people say that they are haunting the building but that's about it ...I guess it would be a bold claim of buzzfeed to say that this college is haunted when it's not.

@@harveyholmes9533 The issue is that he doesn't know whether it was an accident or if the frat was involved and, based on what info was given, he never even looked into any of the latter possibility and in fact took actions that made the police investigation impossible. You ever stop to think that’s kind of the point. These are organizations that have been around for over many many years with the sole point of pruning people for excellence. They are made up of people who come from money and are heads of massive businesses and industries. I’m not saying they don’t do any wrong or don’t have bad practices, but calling something out for being something that it’s inherently designed to be isn’t smart or clever. They should probably be banned but the fact is there are some that are likely too powerful to completely abolish.

@@andrewostman3135 well considering all the school would have to do is no more fraternities or sororities so banning them would be easy, but that isn’t going to happen. I was speaking specifically about the ones who have practices and then ones who have been around forever. College writing instructor here. I would have fraternity pledges show up excited about Greek life, writing about it in journals or other work. Then I would notice that some would be showing up very tired to class or starting to miss class, and then either limping along the rest of the semester or just failing to show up at all. I got a negative impression of Greek life during my own undergrad years, and it was only confirmed as an instructor. Some are of course positive experiences, but I didn't witness as many of those.

Worse, they compensate the person's need of belonging to a group and feeling accepted by it and take profit of it in order to humilliate or endanger people who will later, as they feel part of it, do the same, just "for fun". Not every ritual is like that i guess, i dont want to generalize because i dont know every single time this happens, but i know that passing this rituals strenghts their feeling of belonging and the feeling that it is a privilege or something like that. It is ok to have a group of new people to hang out with and do stuff with when you are in a new place but taking this too far isnt justified in any way and some cases feel like its more like a cult and take it too seriously

As a greek person I always wondered why the fraternity system is called "Greek". There's nothing greek about all this. And the letters not only make little sense (most members don't even know what they stand for) but sorry but they mostly sound weird or funny in an American accent. This sounded like 'betta' date a pie' - and yes that's not at all what they sound like on greek. 😅 If anyone can explain, I'd appreciate it. Hazing and other practices in there sound truly terrible. I wonder why they haven't stopped yet.

It's a little bit of a read but Appalachian State University has a short page on the history behind the use of Greek letters (link: fsl.appstate.edu/history-of-greek-life) if you're interested. As for why the majority like this haven't been stopped...the short answer is money and classism, I think.

These stories are so tragic. I was in a small, service-based sorority that didn't do hazing beyond like, waking you up at 3 am and driving to breakfast at the beach. It was such a positive in my life and most of my friends 10 years later are from Greek life, but stories like these have lead to Greek life at my old school being nearly eradicated. I wish students would realize you don't need to do anything dangerous to pledges to bond or have them take you seriously.

fantastic narration!! :) I remember one of my cousins quit his fraternity after being hazed, because it was awful, and he was wondering to himself "why am I doing this for people who aren't even my friends?" and I'm glad he realized that. anyways though, you don't need to be particularly "privileged" to join a greek life organization (at least, not *always*), as many comments seem to claim. you mostly have to be willing to go through with their sick games, and otherwise just help out in normal ways really. they exist even at schools with little funding and many impoverished students...I would know. it's mostly at really big and/or expensive schools where you'll find houses with only white students and stuff.

I went to PSU, unfortunately this is super common for hazing and there are actually WORSE hazing events that some frats make you do (as in more embarrassing or involving hardcore drugs). Calling an ambulance or police is "frowned upon" in some frats but others like the ones I frequented usually did call an ambulance. In fact, my frat and I called an ambulance for a girl who drank to much...but other frats would actually undress unconscious females and take pictures of them nude to pass around the frat

It ain’t like Saw, people; you don’t really gain as much of a strong bond from group trauma. Forcing it to happen, guess what that’s gonna make the haze-ee feel? Resentment, anger, maybe even trauma depending on how bad it is. I get wanting a club of friends, but sororities and frats, I just don’t feel that’s it. It just feels like a privileged thing, to feel like you’re in a “us vs them” scenario, when you’re all just in school and trying to figure out your life. It just feels kinda unnecessary.
