I have. I once had an online friend, he had far worse mental health problems than I ever did. I talked him out of self-harm many times. I talked him out of suicide. There’s something about being hundreds of miles away from someone you care about who’s going through a crisis that makes you feel utterly powerless. We lost touch years ago. I hope he’s still alive..

Sometimes I need to open that door and let myself feel the loss of a friend who I still wonder "Could I have helped him?" thats literally the story. the singer worked as some sort of volunteer counsellor at a youth camp and one of the kids was addicted to drugs so his friends and family all abandoned him. the kid lost his best friend recently which put him in a depression and he eventually committed suicide. the "friend" in this song is that kid who was abandoned by everyone while he needed help the most. the song is about the singer expressing his regret that he didnt know how to help the kid at the time.
