The Freestylers, formed in 1996 by British DJs and producers Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey, are a prominent electronic music group known for their vibrant blend of breakbeat, electro, and dance music. Both Cantor and Harvey had significant involvement in the British dance music scene throughout the early 1990s, with backgrounds in various music projects before teaming up. Their initial releases, such as the single "Drop the Boom (AK-48)" and the Freestyle EP, quickly made a mark on the dance floors in the UK and abroad.
Their debut album, "We Rock Hard," released in 1998, featured the UK hit single "B-Boy Stance" with rapper Tenor Fly and saw significant success, especially in the US where it sold over 150,000 copies. The Freestylers gained further popularity with their energetic live performances, which included a full band and breakdancers, enhancing their reputation as dynamic and engaging live artists.
The group continued to expand their influence with subsequent albums like "Pressure Point" (2001) and mix compilations for renowned platforms such as Fabric and BBC Radio. Their third album, "Raw as Fuck" (2004), produced successful singles like "Push Up," which did well in both the UK and Australia. Over the years, The Freestylers have also been sought after for remixes by artists across various genres, underscoring their versatility and enduring appeal in the electronic music scene.
