I may be biased because I am French and our administration is notoriously overtly complex, but it may also be because of said bloating that the usage stats of these words is so inflated. Wherever there is an administrative procedure, you can be sure that the wording of the paperwork will be so convoluted that some words will be repeated over and over again even though there really should be no reason to Just as an example, if you have a commission working on "development", you can rest assured that the words "development" will be overused in it, same with other words roughly related to it such as "efficiency", "growth", "industry", "production" etc. I don't think that these stats are entirely a reflection of how much these words are actually used because of these variables that are going to artificially inflate the numbers

interesting how there seems to be a distribution of frequency inversely relative to the frequency of the word length. Since 5 is the most common length, its occurrences are the most evenly distributed. If you get further away from 5, like 3 and 8, the distribution curve is more curvy. I'm not a statistician, so sorry if my terminology is wrong, but I find this fascinating, especially with the visual way it was presented

This has probably been noted already but I couldn't see from a quick scroll of the comments. The idea that shorter words are more common because they have more uses and longer words are more specific is not quite right or at least not to the point. You had already pointed out which parts of speech filled the top 10 and as those types of words are very short for obvious practical reasons, that's why the most common words are short. If you had been able to view the graph based on specific parts of speech you probably would have come up with some more relevant outcomes than just word length. You also note that these most common words are far below the average of used words and distinct words but once you realise that the words of the most common parts of speech are by their nature short, you realise that they are always going to be far below the average just by how averages work.
