Nothing beats the sound of a Black 5 or 8f, for that Stanier 'crack & bark'. No wonder they were the maids of all work in steam days.

Black 5s are super. Thanks for posting this. Back in the '60s I used to travel to work on one and loved the gush of steam that shot across the platform and the wonderful aroma of steam and coal from this big black engine. When I had a model railway, a black 5 was my first purchase. So thanks for bringing back happy memories.

The Black 5s were probably the best steamers in the UK. If you had any work to be done, a Black 5 could do it. And that bark, oooohh that bark. Very impressive. Gotta love UK steam!

TrainTrackTrav Thanks! While I'm a Southern fan by nature, They were without doubt one of the most numerous, and versatile locos, backed up by a great noise!

Matt Seymour Nelson barely broke a sweat on a 5-coach load. She was built to pull huge loads at speed, so not really comfortable trundling around at 25! A brilliant loco though, and unique.
@mattseymour86376 жыл бұрын
Yes you could tell she wanted to go faster and was just whispering rather than barking! as you say 12-15 coaches would be more like it on steap gradients!

That's the sound of a skilled driver and fireman. Love the feathering safety valves. Probably built up a huge back end to keep that up! What a sound. I'm off the the Keighley and Worth Valley next weekend. Hoping for some Of this from the crab!!

mattyrallye Thanks! They always build up plenty of steam during the run round at Alton, so they're nicely prepped for a run up the bank! Plenty of good crews up the Mid-Hants, who really know how to get the most from a loco!

If I had one of those enormous farms in Australia or southern America I would have a railway from my house out to my driveway with a black 5 loco.

I was watching/listening to this at the end of my day after merely looking for Black 5 whistles to turn into a ringtone for my new phone. I started to doze off during your video - not from boredom (anything but!!!) but from pure delight at the sound of a Black 5! I'm still looking for more whistle sounds of these engines, but meanwhile you've got a subscriber from "Down Under" who can't wait to see these engines "in the flesh" in August!!! *:-D*

I wasn't having a pop at the vid.. it is the best black 5 In my opinion.. but I'm biased! Sounding lovely here as always!! The good thing with the MHR is the nice long 1 in 60 either way you go so you always get a good recording of a loco doing more than a bit chuff chuffed!
@VehicularBrit7 жыл бұрын
I know, don't worry - I was just saying what I was thinking. It is a brilliant loco, I 100% agree. I gather she isn't in the best of health at the moment though, she is in the shed with a few bits off her. Yes, the MHR is a great line, it's really nice to have the gradients in both directions unlike so many other lines, as you say it allows the locos to work a bit harder, particularly the smaller ones.

Dear VehicularBrit. Excellent video and sound......Could I use the soundtrack for my video of Black 5 (45212) as my video has no sound and is a long tracking shot? I can send you a copy of the finished video once rendered if you would like......best regards....Mark PS I do not know how to contact a fellow youtuber other than this method, maybe you could enlighten me....

spompeytransportvideo Hi Mark, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, please feel free to use the sound from this video! All I would ask is that you could add a credit in the video description, maybe with a link to my channel. You should be able to use one of the KZbin download websites to get hold of the clip, if that does not work you can get in touch with me via email and I can send you the original file :) Thanks again

never seen a steam engine in my life and this is amazing. Always like this engine in particular. One question as I've always grown up around Diesels and Underground trains in London, is the water suppose to come out the tender?? at the bottom? there was a puddle at the station 9:30
@VehicularBrit7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment - yes, the Black 5's are very likeable locos for many reasons. The water you see flowing, is coming from the injectors that push water from the tender into the boiler, at pressure. The injectors have an overflow pipe which can be seen leaking water if the injectors aren't quite set right, or they are old and worn. From conversations with the crews of this engine in particular, I gather that the injector on this particular loco is quite old and therefore not as effective as it could be, which means some excess water flows past it and out the overflow pipe. Furthermore, that side injector is the "exhaust" injector which takes steam pressure left in the exhaust after passing through the cylinders, and directs it to the injector. These types of injectors are only effective when the loco is running and the regulator is open - which isn't happening when the train is stopped. This means there's no steam passing into the injector to push the water into the boiler, therefore the water just gets gushed out of the pipe. A little wasteful I suppose, but I think the valve that controls the water inlet may be a bit worse for wear, so it doesn't close fully - so a bit of water leaks by. Hope that helps!

it surely has. thanks so much. very detailed answer. I saw the prices online for riding in certain trains and very expensive indeed. The engine sounds very powerful too
@VehicularBrit7 жыл бұрын
No worries, glad I could be of help :) Yes, it does tend to be reasonably expensive to ride. An adult ticket at the Watercress line is £16, and that's generally similar for most heritage railways. If you want to ride on a mainline railtour, you can expect to pay over £100, though.
